AFL Update: Sept. 25, 2019

September 25, 2019

The Saguaros fell behind 4-0 after a three-run 5th by the Javelinas, but roared back to life with a six-run 6th to take their fourth straight game by a 6-4 score over Peoria. Like Opening Night, nearly the full Nats contingent appeared in the game. Sterling Sharp made his second start but wobbled through two …

Carter Kieboom Named to BA’s Pacific Coast League Top 20

September 24, 2019

It’s Top 20 season at Baseball America, and as they wend their way down from AAA, Carter Kieboom is the first National to appear as the #4 prospect in the Pacific Coast League (sorry, no link: paid sub). Like 2018, Kieboom saw his share of ups and downs in 2019, and did fade again down …

AFL Update: Sept. 23, 2019

September 24, 2019

The Javelina pitchers walked seven but struck out 14 and nearly won this anyway. Instead, Surprise finally broke through with a one-out HR from Royals prospect Brewer Hicklen to edge Peoria, 2-1. Luis Garcia returned to the lineup in his usual slot (No. 2) and in the field at his usual spot (shortstop). Garcia reached …

AFL Update: Sept. 22, 2019

September 24, 2019

Six Surprise pitchers combined on three-hit, 12-0 shutout of Salt River as the Saguaros improved to 3-1 on the season. Cole Freeman led off and made his first minor-league appearance in left field, where he made two putouts. At the plate, Freeman singled twice, scored once, walked once, drew a walk, and was thrown out …

AFL/Offseason Update: Sept. 21, 2019

September 21, 2019

With two-spots in the 4th and 5th and two shutdown innings from Jacob Condra-Bogan (pictured), the Saguaros left the Rafters up the creek, 4-1. Luis Garcia started at short for the third straight game and hit safely again, going 1-for-4 with two strikeouts. He also committed an error, but made two putouts and started a …

AFL Update: Sept. 20, 2019

September 20, 2019

The Scorpions blew an early 3-0 lead to the Saguaros but came on strong late, not quite like a hurricane, to take this one, 8-6. As you might have guessed or expected, Luis Garcia was the sole Nationals farmhand to appear in the game. OK, fine: Lee’s pic was also a clue. The 19-y.o. started …

AFL Update: Sept. 19, 2019

September 19, 2019

Seven Washington prospects accounted for the first seven innings pitched and seven of the ten hits as Surprise doubled up Glendale, 4-2 to take the AFL 2019 Opening Day game. Sterling Sharp neutered the Desert Dogs for three no-hit innings, issuing a walk and striking out four, including the side in the 2nd beginning with …

Arizona Fall League Begins Today

September 18, 2019

The 2019 Arizona Fall League starts up today, roughly three weeks earlier than in years past. Sterling Sharp is the scheduled starter for the Saguaros, as he continues to work his way back from a midseason oblique injury. Sharp is one of four pitchers and four position players sent by Washington to the AFL this …

Offseason Update: Sept. 14, 2019

September 14, 2019

Fifty-one weeks ago, the big club was eliminated from the N.L. East. Last night, with the team’s ace pitching, they were shut out, 5-0 to reduce the tragic number to six. Even if they had won, we all know the gap is just too damn big to close. As hot as the big club has …

And Now We Wait

September 9, 2019

Just a quick post here to hold the fort…

We’re a little more than a week way from the AFL starting up, which both upends and extends our offseason. On paper, this shouldn’t matter. We usually go fairly dark in September anyway.

But instead of things starting back up right about when the MLB playoffs begin and finishing just before the Rule 5 deadline to add players to the 40-man roster, it’s basically a week off – a weekend had any of the affiliates made their league championships – and then things go until roughly Game 4 of the World Series.

Those three slow weeks in September, when there’s at least some baseball, are now being shifted to November when there’s almost none. Yes, I know the winter leagues start up in mid-October, but if we’re honest, it’s mostly marginal players.

So you’ll have to forgive me while I figure out how to adjust my editorial schedule. In the meantime, here’s a place to keep the conversation going.
