AFL Update: Oct. 6, 2019

October 6, 2019

The Desert Dogs got single runs in the 1st and 2nd and that would be more than enough as they strong>shut out the Sagauros on four hits, 2-0. Four Nationals appeared in the game: Cole Freeman led off and played second base but was hitless in four at-bats. He had two putouts and no errors. …

AFL/Offseason Update: Oct. 5, 2019

November 25, 2019

The Sagauros rallied from deficits of 2-0, 4-2, and 5-4 but couldn’t push across the equalizer in the 11th and fell to Glendale, 7-6. Luis Garcia (pictured above) returned to the lineup but went hitless in four at-bats, though he hit a sacrifice fly to force the 11th inning. He had three assists and two …

Offseason Update: Oct. 4, 2019

October 4, 2019

An off day in Arizona, but some bonus coverage from Lee from Wednesday night. With runners on second a third and one out, a grounder to first forced a throw home. Mesa’s Ernie Clement dashed home and tried to vault Surprise catcher Matt Whatley but gets tagged for the second out. Jacob Condra-Bogan bore down with runners on the corners and got the third out.

TRANSACTION UPDATE
RHPs Michael Blazek, Justin Miller and LHP Matt Grace all declared free agency.

NO NATS IN BA SALLY LEAGUE TOP 20
A mild shock as the boys in Durham elected not to do their usual double dip with Tim Cate.

AFL Update: Oct. 3, 2019

October 3, 2019

Nick Banks’s second HR in as many games sparked a four-run rally that turned a 6-3 deficit into a 7-6 lead that the Sagauros held for an 8-7 win. Banks was the sole position player from the Nats contingent to appear in the game, as he batted sixth and played right field. His HR was …

AFL Update: Oct. 2, 2019

October 2, 2019

So I went to bed early last night. Did I miss anything? Narrator: He did not go to bed early and like a donkey in a dress, his ass is dragging this morning. While there was some drama in the 8th in Peoria, Arizona, it was merely a solo HR by Nick Banks to break …

Offseason Update: Oct. 1, 2019

October 1, 2019

Sterling Sharp is scheduled to make his third appearance for the 8-2 Surprise Sagauros tonight in Peoria. Not much new to tell on Luis Garcia, except that Fangraphs’ Eric Longenhagen is calling it a leg injury: Nationals prospect Luis Garcia leaves with apparent leg injury. Tried a Freddy Galvis slide to his right, walked off …

AFL Update: Sept. 30, 2019

September 30, 2019

The Sagauros dropped a four-spot on the Javelinas twice – once in the 3rd to break open a 1-0 game and then again in the 7th to turn a 7-4 lead into the final 11-4 score. Of course, it wouldn’t be the Nationals without a top prospect getting hurt. Our eyes in the field, a.k.a. …

AFL Update: Sept. 29, 2019

September 29, 2019

The Sagauros’ streak was stopped last night with 2-0 shutout on six hits by the Scorpions.

Cole Freeman, pictured to the right, led off and played centerfield for Surprise. He was the only National to appear in the game.

Freeman led off the first with an infield single and took second on a wild pitch, where was he was stranded. It would be his only appearance on the basepaths.

In the outfield, Freeman was busy – he caught four fly balls and fielded five hits.

The loss drops Surprise to 7-2 on the fall campaign, which is still good for first place and a two-game lead over Peoria.

AFL/Offseason Update: Sept. 28, 2019

November 25, 2019

The game-winning run scored in the 8th, but, um, surprise it was the Saguaros who stung the Scorpions, 4-3, to improve to 7-1. Luis Garcia and Nick Banks were the only two Nationals to appear in the game. Garcia singled twice and doubled (pictured above) to go 3-for-4 with a walk, improving his line to …

AFL Update: Sept. 27, 2019

September 28, 2019

Rain cancelled four of the five games in the AFL yesterday, including the matchup between the 1st-place Mesa Solar Sox and the 1st-place Surprise Saguaros.

Instead, the Saguaros will remain in Peoria for the weekend, hosting the Scorpions tonight and tomorrow night, and the Javelinas on Sunday night. It’s not your imagination: Just one of their games has been away from Peoria Sports Complex.

While it’s tempting to recap how the Nats are doing statistically, the samples sizes are still microscopic. But I suspect many of you just can’t help yourself, so… Luis Garcia (pictured) is second in PA’s and 4th in TB’s while Jacob Condra-Bogan is tied for the league lead with saves and Andrew Lead is third in IP and tied for second in K’s.
