Preseason Update: Apr. 30, 2021
Yesterday, I bought tickets to a minor-league game – Down East vs. Carolina in Kinston – which, weather permitting, will be the first one I’ve attended since this one in 2019. Technically, that’s only a little more than 20 months, but it feels much, much longer.
As noted in the comments, MiLB teams have to comply with the minimum standards set forth by MLB (i.e. surpassing the Texas-Florida standards), which means wearing masks and fans farther back from the field than usual. Some teams (e.g. Syracuse) are taking it a step further, and requiring either full vaccination (14 days after the second shot, or first for J&J) or a negative test.
Baseball America has gone hog-wild this week with stories about the season starting up next week on Star Wars Day. I think most of us are familiar with the changes, but a quick recap:
- All series are six games, with every Monday off except for the Triple-A West
- The schedule is heavily tilted towards the team’s division, if not entirely (Rochester)
- Higher (brighter) lighting standards
- Higher standards for MiLB.tv broadcasts
- No on-field promotions
- No autographs
- Cashless concessions (mostly)
- Fewer teams broadcasting on the road
Three of our four full-season affiliates are opening the season on the road, with Wilmington the sole team with a May 4 Opening Day. As you might have inferred from the lede, I’ll on vacation in North Carolina the second week of May, which takes me out of the first two weekends of the season – the first for which I will not be a season-ticket holder to a Nats affiliate since 2005, which would have been odd since I was living in Lynn, MA at the time.
The hope is to get media credentials for Fredericksburg and to make it to the other three affiliates at least once this summer. Even that may be less than ideal because I do not know what the setup will be. I covered a game in Aberdeen that way in 2012, and what you see in that pic is what I saw – good enough for a gamer, but terrible for scouting the pitcher or hitter.
Credentials or not, the upshot is that I’ll be seeing a whole lot less than in years past, which I knew after the 2019 season ended, but have still yet to experience with games being played.
This is nuts, we are 4 days away from the season and the CIA, err, Nats have not released their rosters yet.
Who in the f.o. thought that was a good idea?
Hence again thinking of the Steve Martin film the Lonely Guy where he and his buddy hold a party with cardboard cut outs of people
Minor league baseball may have to do the same thing and pipe in cheering like the NHL does
Saysnara , baseball cabal !!
I know it may not seem like it, but this is pretty typical. Usually it’s two days before Opening Day. That would be Sunday, so I would agree that Monday is the day to target.
The rosters of all four Nats teams are on each team’s website, under “Team/Roster.”
Those aren’t the Opening Day rosters. When those are released, they’ll identify the full 28, the I.L., etc.
I’m not expecting to see a roster til Monday. The Nats are always the last to release it and their minor league teams will take their time posting it on their websites. If anyone sees anything posted, please update us! TY!
Part of the roster curiosity is to see who is still in the system. Of course if they’re injured, they may not even get assigned.
I expect to see Harrisburg stacked this year, although “stacked” is definitely a relative term for a system with so little higher-projected hitting talent. But the pitching should be strong.
The Orioles just released their roster assignments. Hello Nats?
Oh, you mean for the bush league team that plays at Camden Yard? (Sorry, couldn’t resist!)
Its not good for the individual minor-league franchises for the organization to be so slow with the release. The local teams like to try to build interest by having the local papers (or websites) do stories on the top players who are being sent to their burgs. But when those aren’t revealed until a couple of days before the games start, there’s time for advance publicity.
I still expect a couple infield assets to get pushed down to AA what with the glut @ ROCH
Even with the alt site crowd
Blue Rocks player list is Out!
