Alex Clemmey’s last AA start before going on the I.L. control issues came back with a vengeance as the 20-y.o. threw just 15 strikes that weren’t converted into hits to 15 batters faced. He was charged with 10 runs (seven earned) on four hits, four walks, and two hit batsmen over an inning and a 1/3rd. The 11-run lead was too small for Akron as Harrisburg launched an historic (or since 1987) comeback of 13 runs and 14 hits over the next five innings to win 13-11 and split the series. Led by Connor Van Scoyoc (3IP), five relievers combined for seven scoreless innings to finish the game. Max Romero Jr. (2HR), Seaver King (HR, 2B), Sam Petersen (2-2B), and Cayden Wallace each had three hits in the Sens’ 15-hit offensive. FCL Nationals – OFFSEASON
The F-Nats kick off the first of 50-something games against the FCL East, with five games in West Palm Beach this week, including two “road” games against the F-Astros. Roster moves: RHPs Aaron Shortridge, Jacob Weaver (both MLFAs) assigned from Washington.
pretty much (baserunning?) everything to like about Seaver King’s repeat tour of AA. I wonder how aggressive they’ll be this time with a promotion. there is certainly no one in Rochester blocking his path to every day SS duties. if I had to guess I’d say they give him another 2-3 weeks of continued success.
I’ll be interested to see how the new regime handles in season promotions. After being incredibly conservative with prospect promotions for years, the org pivoted hard once they realized (too late) just how much things had really stagnated, and started promoted very aggressively (Crews being the poster child).
I don’t know how much to read into Ronny Cruz’s aggressive promotion, as it was largely forced by playing time issues in Fburg and the glut of SS. But there’s a few profiles of guys to watch. First, the easiest to promote: guys like Seaver King, Cayden Wallace, Sam Brown, Jackson Kent, Josh Randall, Pablo Aldonis, and Yohandy Morales, who are repeating the level but seem to have mastered it. They should be the logical first batch to promote, though Morales is complicated by 40 man/26 man roster implications.
The next batch are the “old for the level” types: Jake Moroknek, Ethan Petry, Jacob Walsh, Brady Hill and Carson Fischer, who aren’t repeating the level (in any meaningful way), but are a few years old for the level, and performing as an overly skilled player should against younger/inferior opposition.
The last batch will be the most interesting to give insight into the org’s philosophy: the youngsters, mashing at levels above their age appropriate level. Here you had Ronny Cruz, but also Eli Willits, Yeremy Cabrera, Devin Fitz-Gerald, Miguel Sime and Landon Harmon. Will they get a quick hook like Cruz? Or will they be given a customary half season (or more) before getting promoted?
Clemmey looks completely lost. Luke, I know you were being tongue in cheek, but I do strongly suspect we’ll see Clemmey hit the IL soon. Clemmey has always been wild, but this is another level.
Even if the IL stint is like Jack Rogers’, to put him out of his misery for a while, I think one is coming.
What in the world is going on with Ford? He’s been nothing short of brutal.
The biggest dissappointment for me so far this early going of the minor league season. Close seconds are Clemney and Fien (although i really don’t know the backstory to him grading his “injury”
Great question about Harry Ford.
It’s not like he’s hitting into bad luck. Ford is just not hitting. 22 games and:
3 extra base hits?
Zero HRs?
.214 SLG? (that has to be among the worst in the minors for a regular player)
BB rate down?
K rate up?
If Ford had simply demonstrated a pulse, he would be playing for the Nats now as Kiebert and Millas (another huge disappointment; was expecting Millas to star, but he looks completely lost at the plate) are the worst catching tandem in MLB.
As insane as it sounds, Riley Adams has been the best catcher, by far among the four in AAA and MLB, and Adams is hitting .216 with a .378 SLG in AAA. Probably shouldn’t say “best”, more like least “awful”.
