AFL Update: Oct. 22, 2021

Scottsdale answered Surprise’s field goal in the 2nd with a safety in the 3rd to make it 3-2. After that, it was all Sagauros as the Nats’ AFL entry stung the Scorpions for fourteen unanswered runs in a 17-2 rout on Thursday afternoon.

Three of “our guys” were in the starting lineup:

  • Donovan Casey led off and played CF, drawing two walks in four plate appearances and stealing a base. In the field, he had two putouts in six innings
  • Jackson Cluff batted 7th and played short. He went 2-for-3 with a homer (pictured), a stolen base, two walks, three RBI, and four runs scored. He had two assists on defense.
  • Israel Pineda was the DH out of the No. 8 spot in the Surprise lineup. The 21-y.o. singled, doubled, scored twice, and drove in two in four trips to the plate.

RHP Todd Peterson also made an appearance, tossing a 1-2-3 eighth with 12 pitches thrown, seven for strikes.

Surprise (5-2) heads back out on the road to visit Glendale (5-3) this afternoon. Jackson Rutledge is not officially listed as the starter, but referenced “tomorrow” in this video taken yesterday. ESPN has learned that that would mean today.

    Maybe Cluff will be the talk upstairs after AFL?

  2. In 4 games in the AFL, Jackson Cluff has hit half (1) as many HRs as he hit (2) in 45 regular regular season games. He has 40% of his regular season RBIs (4 vs 10), 25% of his XBH (2 vs 8), and 25% of his walks (3 vs 12). Safe to say it’s been a promising start for Cluff.

    Same can be said of Pineda. For a guy who struggled to hit for average (.208 AVG), he’d have to got hitless in his next 5 or 6 games to bring his average (.571) down to that level.

  3. It should also be noted that Todd Peterson also featured out of the pen, throwing a scoreless/hitless 8th inning (2 GO and 1 FO).

  4. Nothing but positives from yesterday, everybody was terrific.

    Cliff does not look to be any taller than 5’7″. Of course, neither was Dustin Pedroia.

  5. What with S Suzuki about to be posted from Japan for MLB clubs as a 3 b- would the Nats entertain the hitter amidst the Kieboom patience walk ?

  6. Can we have a few guys climb out of DSL faster like Houston Astro hurler Luis Garcia ?
