Tuesday’s News & Notes

September 15, 2026
Team Yesterday Today Pitching Probables
Rochester OFF DAY @ Buffalo, 6:05pm Early (MLB Rehab) vs. Yesavage (0-1, 6.75)

Rochester Red Wings, 41-28, 1st I.L. East, 1GA – 86-56 overall
With a 4-2 series win over the RailRiders—fingers crossed the new identity is something shorter, like the Moosic Moose—the Red Wings opened up a two-game lead in the division, which is meaningless because the International League’s playoffs have a single round. Plus, the division is so heavily weighted toward geography there are two teams they did not play and only two teams in the other division.

That Rochester has been able to contend while using 53 different pitchers (not an exaggeration) and 25 different “starters” is a, um, minor miracle. The converse to the pitchers is that they’ve only used 28 different batters. That is unusual, as that number is usually in the range of 35-45 in a given season.

As Will would no doubt point out if I didn’t, the new front office’s refusal reluctance to promote position players has actually helped this club by giving it a solid core of 4A’s (e.g., Trey Lipscomb, Riley Adams, Brady House), a trio of guys who should have been promoted sooner (Yoyo Morales, Christian Franklin, Abimelec Ortiz) and a couple of guys who are perhaps purposefully being kept down with the looming lockout (Seaver King, Cayden Wallace). It’s nevertheless encouraging to see this many guys who could potentially play in D.C. without a team plane crashing.

Noah Dean ( MA. Kid ) ex Red Sox who enjoyed Bennett all summer .
Wouldn’t that be ironic don’t you think ( Alanis Morrissette ?) if Noah Dean pulled a “ Jeff Fassero “ out of nowhere on the Nats taking the sting out of Bennett ?

If the sources are spot on then the initial AFL invitees are interesting .
Noah Dean lefty was an interesting add from the young Turks Boston past
Teo Banks worked his way into substantial outfield playing time while Motas injury stalled his transition. To outfield with his tools much like Fien who experienced a healthier summer .

RHP Jarlin Susana OF Teo Banks, LHP Noah Dean, LHP Nolan Hughes, OF/3B Jorgelys Mota and RHP R.J. Sales are headed to the AZ Fall League. Hope they all have Seaver King 2025 type of jumps.

Susana would’ve been the only one I would’ve guessed. Banks is a massive surprise. An 18th rounder with 18th rounder performances to date…. what’s the idea here? There’s no shortage of outfielders in this org and Banks isn’t even R5 eligible for another year. Green, TJ White, Vaquero, Sam Brown or even Ethan Petry repeating make more sense than Banks from my perspective. Among infielders, I might’ve thought Hines or Walsh would get a chance to put a nice finish to otherwise strong seasons.

Besides Susana, Sales and Hughes aren’t surprises, as they’re your typical injured-pitcher-getting-more-innings. Though Dean, a recent MILFA pick up at age 25 coming off a really bad shortened season in AA is a pretty big surprise. It’s evident Toboni really like him, as he drafted him a couple years ago. But since then there’s been little-to-no evidence that he’s very good. It doesn’t matter much if you’re striking out batters at above average rates (12.3 K/9) when you’re walking 7.7 BB/9, while being generally considerably above the age appropriate level. I’d have thought Eriq Swan would have been a similar profile but more interesting than Dean. But two other wildcard options that could’ve been considered: DJ Herz and Connelly Early. It wouldn’t be the first time major leaguers appeared in the AFL. Rhett Lowder, to name just one, pitched in the ’25 AFL after debuting in the majors in 2024. With the Nats struggling to find a way to get Early rehab innings before the minor league season ends, this would’ve been the perfect opportunity. Likewise, it would’ve been a good chance to stretch Herz out, just like they’re doing with Susana.
