The Red Wings rallied for three runs in the 3rd, 7th, and 9th innings while five pitchers combined to shut out the Storm Chasers, 9-0 on four hits. Jared Simpson went the first three, allowing one hit and one walk while fanning two. Riley Cornelio followed with two hits allowed over two innings, no walks, and four whiffs and got the win, his sixth. Yoyo Morales singled twice, hit his 24th HR, and drove in four while Cayden Wallace reached base four times on a single, two walks, and homer and plated three. It was Rochester’s ninth win over its last 11 games.

Akron doubled up Harrisburg, 8-4 and took the series, 3-2. Yoel Tejeda Jr. lost his third consecutive start, giving up five runs on three homers and five hits total while walking four and striking out three. Nick Mitchell had a pair of RBI singles and scored on a balk while Elijah Green singled twice and… wait for it… struck out twice to lead the Senators offense.

The Blue Rocks’ four-game win streak was halted with a 7-2 loss to the Keys. Carson Fischer pitched into the 5th for the 14th time in 21 starts, but took the loss with two runs allowed on six hits and two walks. He struck out one. Nate Rombach ended the shutout bid with a solo HR while Ronny Cruz drove in Chris Hacopian with his 15th double at High-A (19th overall) to account for the two Wilmington runs.

The wheels came off the bus in the 8th inning as Kannapolis turned a one-run game into a laugher as the Cannon Ballers shelled Fredericksburg, 17-4. Marlon De La Cruz reverted to the mean with four runs let on five hits and four walks for his sixth loss. It was the fifth time in 13 Low-A starts he gave up more runs than innings thrown. Coy James doubled and homered while Hunter Hines singled and homered to lead the FredNats attack. Roster moves: OF Elian Soto activated from 7-Day I.L. (eff. 8/22); Christian Fagnant placed on the Development List.

I won’t draw too many conclusions from a shortened season, but Avery Ortiz has had a poor start to his professional career (an aside: can we even say that anymore with NIL paying players now? College players are just as much professionals as minor leaguers are, and many are likely getting paid better than their “pro” peers). He’s struck out a worrying 17 times in 34 ABs. Swing and miss wasn’t really a problem of his in college, so I hope it’s just a sign he’s tired after a long season.
Hacopian has been better. He’s not striking out at all. Only 8 in 35 AB, to go with 7 BB for a good .381 OBP, which lines up with his scouting report. But so far there’s been no power. Literally. He’s got 9 hits, all singles so far, which is a continuation of a trend this year, since he injured his back. I think the offseason should help a lot to fix this.
Marlon de la Cruz has been a major disappointment since his well-deserved promotion from the FCL. He’s been AWFUL in Fredericksburg. A 7.19 ERA, more walks (50) than Ks (41) and a miserable 2.21 WHIP. It’s too bad. de la Cruz looked like the singular positive Nats IFA arm this season. So now it’s back to none.
Joe Glassey, acquired for Franklin, just might be the Nats’ best performing trade deadline acquisition. He’s been almost perfect in 7 outings so far: 7 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0 H, 8 K and only one measly walk. Looks to me like he’s ready for AAA.
Let’s hold off on the assessments of players in their first two weeks of professional baseball. See Seaver King. People were calling him a bust way too early. Not saying King (or Ortiz) will be an all-star, but there always is an adjustment to professional baseball.
That said, even before the draft Chris Hacopian’s tools (or lack of them) scare me. Feel like he will always hit, which is great, but his defense (where can he play on an MLB level) is and will continue to be a question-mark. He can’t run, and not sure about whether the power will develop (11 HR in 195 college PAs at A&M is far from elite).
So, what is his Hacopian’s ceiling as an MLB player? A corner OF/DH (maybe second base) with limited power and who can’t put pressure on the opponent with his base-running? Feel-like Hacopian’s hit tool needs to be great (and it may be) for him to be a quality MLB player because don’t see any of his other tools as standing out.
