Friday’s News & Notes

August 22, 2025
Team Yesterday Today Pitching Probables
Rochester Lost, 16-5 vs. Toledo, 6:45pm Luckham (0-1, 0.82) vs. Margevicius (5-3, 3.60)
Harrisburg Lost, 3-2 @ Erie, 6:05pm Clemmey (0-0, 21.60) vs. Serwa (5-5, 3.78)
Wilmington Lost, 5-3 @ Winston-Salem, 6:30pm Sthele (6-5, 4.18) vs. TBD
Fredericksburg Won, 10-6 vs. Fayetteville, 4:35pm Sullivan (0-1, 3.78) vs. Verdugo (Low-A debut)

Toledo 16 Rochester 5
• Conley (L, 2-3) 4IP, 7H, 7R, 7ER, 3BB, 4K, 3HR
• Arruda 1IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 0K
• Pinckney 4-4, 3B,
• Tena 2-4, 2R, BB
• Morales 2-5, RBI

When a position player is your most effective reliever, you know it was bad night for the Red Wings, who were broasted by the Mud Hens, 16-5. Bryce Conley took the brunt of the beating, serving up seven runs on seven hits (three HR) over four innings. Andrew Pinckney singled three times and tripled once while José Tena and Yoyo Morales each had two hits to pace the Rochester offense.

Erie 3 Harrisburg 2
• Bennett 5IP, 4H, 1R, 1ER, 2BB, 3K,
• Sinclair (L, 0-2) 4BF, 2H, 1R, 1ER, 2IBB, 0K
• Wallace 2-3, 2R, 2B, SB
• S. Brown 2-4

Harrisburg pushed across the tying run in the top of the 9th only to have Erie lead off the 9th with a triple. Jack Sinclair then walked the next two batters but did not get the strikeout, popup, or comebacker necessary to cordero out of the jam, instead losing, 3-2. Jake Bennett turned in five innings of one-run ball on four hits, two walks, and three whiffs in a no-decision. Cayden Wallace singled, doubled, and score twice, and stole a base to lead the Sens attack.

Winston-Salem 5 Wilmington 3
• Swan 6IP, 3H, 1R, 1ER, 4BB, 4K
• Knowles (BS, 1; L, 0-1) 1⅔ IP, 4H, 4R, 3ER, 1BB, 2K, WP
• McKenzie 3-5, 2B, SB(5)
• Lawson 1-3, BB, RBI

Eriq Swan could only go six and had to watch the Blue Rocks ‘pen to turn a 3-1 lead into 5-3 loss. Swan let in one run on three hits and four walks over six for the quality start, which, along with $2 $4 (tariffs, natch) gets him a coffee. Lucas Knowles retired five of ten batters let in four runs for the blown-save-loss. Jared McKenzie had two singles and a double to lead Wilmington’s six-hit, six-walk offense.

Fredericksburg 10 Fayetteville 6
• B. Romero (W, 2-4) 6IP, 4H, 3R, 3ER, 6BB, 5K, HR
• Minckler ⅔ IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K, WP, 1-1 IR-S
• Willits 3-4, R, BB, 2RBI, SB
• Petry 3-5, R, RBI
• Cox 2-4, R, BB, RBI
• R. Diaz 2-4, R, SF, RBI

Eli Willits did not disappoint in his professional debut, beating out a double play and stealing second in his first PA and going 3-for-4 overall with a walk, a run scored, and two RBI in a 10-6 Fredericksburg win that pulled the FredNats into a tie for 1st place in the second half. Brayan Romero walked six but only let in three runs on four hits over six frames to notch his second win and third quality start. Ethan Petry also had three singles while Brenner Cox and Randal Diaz each had two in the FredNats’ 16-hit parade. Roster moves: RHP Owen Puk assigned from Washington; SS Eli Willits reassigned from the FCL.

Fantastic debut from Willits, that conformed to his scouting report to a tee: good hit skills, good speed, limited power. It’s especially remarkable doing so as one of the youngest players in A ball (2nd youngest actually, Andrew Salas, younger brother to prospects Ethan and Jose, is 4 months younger than Eli), still being 4 months shy of his 18th birthday.

Really interesting that Owen Puk (another from a baseball family) has reported. He’s the only arm from this year’s draft class to appear to date.

I really hope Wallace can keep this pace up, and finish the season strong. Since this torrid streak began on August 12th, he’s racked up as many hits in 9 games (18) as he’d hit in his previous 30. It’s raised his OPS by 69 points, bringing him up to .642 on the season, reminding us that there still might be something valuable there.

      “Limited power”? Really?

Willits is 17. He played his first game of professional baseball, went 3 for and 4, and that confirms he has limited power?

So, if Willits had hit a HR last night, would that confirm he had plus power?

Let the kid play some games, and see where he goes.

Get over that the Nats didn’t draft Kade Anderson. Willits is ours now. Lets enjoy the ride.

You’re projecting a lot into a post, but I’ll say it again: Fantastic debut from Willits.

I can hear FP now, bring him up, he’s ready!

Petry’s comment that he play’s like his hair’s on fire rang true last night. when the outfielder was a bit lazy on a single he tried to take two. thrown out but with two outs it was not a bad play. when Cox draws a throw at third he takes second as the trail runner.

After struggling in his first AA game, Jake Bennett has been really good over the subsequent five. He’s a Rule 5 decision for this winter, and adding him seems like a no-doubter.

Nice late-season surges by Cayden Wallace and Andrew Pinckney. Pinckney should end up topping 20 homers and 30 steals.
