Liriano – yikes, that was fast. He got a pretty decent signing bonus too. Didn’t they hype up up quite a bit?

Was that Dipuglia’s last time in charge of IFA’s?

Goes to show how badly that operation had been running for a while.

Nats signed Liriano for $400K in January 2023. He’s taken a step back this season, and at 19 is actually old for the Dominican SL. With his awful numbers, he wasn’t coming to the States, and three seasonss is about the limit for the DSL.

True that, but at his age and lack of pro experience, he is not someone I even consider. That’s just me. 🙂

I repeat : clean house in the PD offices .
With all the pitching injuries on the 60 day plus lists
We are spyglassing every starters progress even the guys added to eat IP after others went on the lists since opening day .

Was it injury related that Crews left after getting hit by a pitch? Or was he always just planning to get a couple ABs?

Nats trade Andrew Chafin and Luis Garcia (the pitcher) to the Angels for LHP Jake Eder and a prospect.

      Sam Brown: https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=brown-006sam

The curious thing I see with him is that the Angels started his pro career at AA last year. He’s still at AA. Has improved his K and BB rates. Seems to have good gap power but not HR. His 117 OPS+ makes him look more solid than his .708 OPS does. He has a .289 BABIP so hasn’t gotten a lot of breaks. He doesn’t look like great shakes for a corner bat, but maybe the analytics folks think his launch angle can be changed or something.

I mean, even if he were a bag of balls, it would be a great flip of two recent DFA pick ups in Chafin and Garcia. Though the Angels are an extremely weird org in rushing their draftees to the majors. So there’s some hope that Brown might have just been pushed too quickly, too soon.

Eder is a weird one. He has a career minor league ERA of 5.30! And yet he’s somehow risen to the majors, where he weirdly has a better ERA of 4.87. He’s a great example of a guy with good stuff but poor execution. I’ve seen reports that part of the reason why he’s had more success in the majors is because he’s been used as a reliever, while he’s been used exclusively as a SP in the minors. His future lies in the bullpen, where his “stuff” should play up a bit better.

Yet another example of how the relief pitching market is a surprisingly effective way at acquiring prospect capital. I wish we took our bullpen more seriously this offseason, and had more talent that Chafin and Garcia (and Finnegan, while he does his usual late July choke job) to try to flip right now.
