Tuesday’s News & Notes

July 22, 2025

Harrisburg OFF DAY vs. Akron, 6:30pm Cornelio (3-1, 2.32) vs. Mace (9-5, 3.70)
Wilmington OFF DAY @ Jersey Shore, 6:05pm Kent (4-6, 4.14) vs. Dutton (1-2, 5.06)

FCL Nationals Won, 7-1 OFF DAY
DSL Nationals Won, 3-2 vs. DSL Mets Orange, 11am

Rochester Red Wings, 9-12, 7th I.L. East, 8½ GB – 36-57 Overall
The sun may not shine on the same dog’s @ss everyday, so it’s conceivable that the Rochester Red Wings won’t be swept by the visiting Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, winners of 11 straight. But it could happen as the #2 offense/#6 pitching matches up against the #16 pitching staff/#12 offense. Roster moves: OF Jordan Williams assigned from Washington (NDFA).

Harrisburg Senators, 8-12, 5th E.L. Southwest, 4½ GB – 42-47 Overall
Despite the emergence of Jarlin Susana from witness protection, there’s no sign the Senators won’t continue to lean on the bullpen twice a week while they wait for Godot or for the FCL season to end. This week the RubberDucks come to City Isle for six with only a Sunday matinee.

Wilmington Blue Rocks, 11-13, T4th Sally Lg. North, 6GB – 41-48 Overall
Wilmington’s offensive woes continue as they struggle to score four runs in a series, never mind a single game. Unlike the recent past, Fredericksburg doesn’t have much to spare, aside from too-old-for-the-level guys who might get socially promoted to make way for FCL grads. This week, the Blue Rocks visit the BlueClaws with a matinee tomorrow and day game on Sunday.

Fredericksburg Nationals, 14-8, 2nd C.L. North, 1GB – 44-43 Overall
Fredericksburg’s “sweep” of Lynchburg put the FredNats over .500 for the season and kept them in second place for the second half. This week, the third-place Woodpeckers come to town for the first of two series in the ‘burg in the second half.

FCL Nationals 7 FCL Marlins 1
• Sampson (W, 1-0) 5IP, 3H, 0R, 0BB, 9K
• Portorreal (SV, 1) 4IP, 2H, 1R, 0ER, 0BB, 4K,
• Ramirez 1-2, 2R, 2B, BB, HBP
• A. Feliz 1-4, R, HR, RBI, 2K
• D. Tejeda 1-5, R, 2RBI, 2SB

Adrian Sampson toyed with the F-Marlins for five shutout innings in a 7-1 romp by the F-Nats. He allowed three hits, walked none, ans struck out nine. Leuris Portorreal lost the shutout but finished the game for his first career save. Rafael Ramirez Jr. reached base three times on a double, walk, and a Robles while Angel Feliz homered as the FCL Nationals took advantage of seven walks and four hit batsmen to score seven times on seven hits. Roster moves: RHP Adrian Sampson assigned from Rochester for MiLB Rehab.

DSL Nationals 3 DSL Rockies 2
• J. Reyes (W, 3-2) 6IP, 5H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 2K, HR
• Gimenez (H, 1) 2IP, 0H, 0R, 1BB, 2K
• M. Ruiz (SV, 7) 1IP, 2H, 1R, 1ER, 0BB, 0K
• Hurtado 1-4, R, HR, 3RBI
• Obispo 1-3, SB(10)

Three pitchers made Victor Hurtado’s Earl Weaver special in the 1st stand up as the DSL Nationals edged the DSL Rockies, 3-2. 20-y.o. Juan Reyes pitched six full innings for the third time this season and not coincidentally, won all three times. He allowed a solo HR and five hits total while walking one and striking out two. 20-y.o. Greyson Gimenez put up goose eggs in the 7th and 8th to earn the hold. 19-y.o. Manuel Ruiz let in a run on two hits without a walk or whiff in the 9th to get credited with the save, his seventh of the season.

Ripple effect… FCL ends, one or two guys get pushed up–Liam Sullivan is most likely going to bump someone from the rotation already–Tejeda or Garcia move up to Wilmington, which then enables a Blue Rock pitcher to move up and/or swap places (*cough* Dustin Saenz for Erik Tolman *cough*). Might not happen, but it could.

Press release just came in from the FredNats…

        SUBTRACT:
Davian Garcia (RHP) transferred to High-A Wilmington.
Yoel Tejeda Jr. (RHP) transferred to High-A Wilmington.

        Another Aaron Altman moment…

the next ten days could bring a lot of movement with some interesting choices.

does Lara continue to work in the big club pen? where does Bennett land now that he’s back to full strength? does Clemmey get aggressively pushed again? will Cavalli get bumped up assuming Soroka is dealt? what to do with Willits and the FCL guys that merit a look. Sykora and Susana should be back on the City Isle bump soon.

    1. Pilchard says:

Will be surprised if Willits does anything other than report to West Palm and play “organized scrimmages” there. A couple of the college players taken 2025 MLB draft picks will appear for F’burg, but don’t see anu HS kids taking that step.

it would be easy to look at the Red Wings’ season as a disaster but at least they have gone from among the oldest, to about the middle to among the youngest teams in the Intl League.
