Transaction Update
Things are finally starting to pick up on the transaction front. Baseball America, after going most of the offseason with Mordecai Brown digit count of posts, released its second transactions post this month!
SIGNED
• RHP Allen Webster
RELEASED
• LHP Nick Raquet
Webster has spent parts of five seasons in the majors with the Red Sox… wait for it… the Diamondbacks, and the Cubs. Injuries have limited the 30-y.o. to just 35 innings the past two seasons. Raquet was a 3rd Rd. pick in the 2017 Draft out of the College of William and Mary but hit his ceiling at High-A (37GS, 4.32 ERA, 1.43 WHIP), and fared very poorly in the 2019 AFL (9G, 2GS, 11⅔ IP, 14H, 13R, 11ER, 9BB, 12K).
Word on the street is that the minor-league games began yesterday, with the Nats playing the Marlins to a 1-0 win. Some of the unofficial highlights, courtesy of Mr. Dennis Dunlap (I believe he is Alex’s father):
• Romero – 2IP, 0R, 2H, 2BB, 2K – ended the 2nd inning by picking off the runner at 1st base.
• Cate – 2IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB, 2K – the shutout was preserved in the 4th by a strong throw from Bautista in CF to Pineda to nail a Marlins runner at the plate.
• Irvin – 2IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 4K – 2 clean innings
• Wells – 1IP, 0R, 1H, 2K – the inning ended on a caught stealing by Dunlap
• Maldonado – 1IP, 0R, 0H, 1K – clean inning
• Teel – 1IP, 0R, 0H, 1K – clean inning
• Banks – BB, stolen base
• Bichette – infield single, run
• Mendoza – 2B to the LCF gap, RBI
• Dunlap – 1B
• Emiliani – 1B
The big boys will in Jupiter this afternoon before heading back to West Palm Beach tomorrow.
Great Luke.
I was expecting a mole with the name Lenny Webster typed then Lenny crossed out
Raquet just another loogie after the shift from starter to fireman .
Let’s hear it for dads in the B fields
Maybe Mr Dennis could relay ya his takes on Lara ?? If he is eyeing this post …
No sightings on Lara. He was not part of the minor league early camp group. The remaining position players report on 3/11 and the first full squad workouts with everyone in camp are on Thursday 3/12.
Ok ty Carl.
Raquet ‘s jettisoning must have something to do with the handful of lefty relievers lead by Hayden Howard in A pool
Big surprise on Raquet. Can’t say the Nats didn’t give him every opportunity. It just didn’t work out.
Let’s pray that Seth met his humbleness being tossed off his high horse on his Damascus Road
Are you kidding me! MiLB is not testing for weed anymore. High horse is right. “Hiiiiiiiiigh oh Silver, away” !
Particularly surprising with Raquet considering that they gave him a showcase spot in the Az Fall League. I always thought he was over-drafted, with some pretty mediocre college numbers. He was said to “touch 98,” though, although that blazing velocity apparently never translated to game action. He made OK progression through the minors and would have been slated for AA in 2020. And really, his progress would have been pretty decent for someone drafted lower.
Anyway, good luck to him.
As maddening as Romero’s tenure with the Nats has been, all we can do now is hope that he eventually, finally lives up to the hype. It’s interesting that he got the start over some touted guys slated for AA. My guess is that Romero will begin the year at Fredericksburg (A+).
It’s also very interesting that Emiliani, with no experience above GCL, is getting game action with largely a AA lineup.
Forinsicane loves LeoE
The Romero above is Seth, and not Jhon or Carlos, right?
If so, good to see Seth is finally back.
Maybe with Romero all the time off has given him a chance to grow up. When he was drafted it turned out he was 14 years old maturity-wise.
Seth Romero sighting!
Got the potential to climb the ladder quickly.
