AFL Update: Sept. 25, 2019

September 25, 2019

An alert Luis Garcia makes it to first on a strike out/passed ball to ignite the six-run 6th inning.
The Saguaros fell behind 4-0 after a three-run 5th by the Javelinas, but roared back to life with a six-run 6th to take their fourth straight game by a 6-4 score over Peoria.

Like Opening Night, nearly the full Nats contingent appeared in the game.

  • Sterling Sharp made his second start but wobbled through two scoreless innings, putting on four baserunners with three hits and a walk, but fanning two. He threw 48 pitches, 26 for strikes.
  • Cole Freeman led off and played CF, where he made three putouts. He went 0-for-4 with two with strikeouts.
  • Luis Garcia batted second and played SS, where he had two assists. At the plate, he singled twice to the opposite field, scoring once, and driving in one.
  • Jakson Reetz was the cleanup man and started behind the plate. He went 1-for-4 with a walk but failed to throw out two basestealers.
  • Nick Banks was the DH in the No. 7 slot but was hitless with two whiffs.
  • Jacob Condra-Bogan worked around a walk in the 9th to notch his second save. He struck out one and threw 18 pitches, nine for strikes.

The two teams meet again tonight for a third straight game, with Surprise as the home team.

AFL/Offseason Update: Sept. 26, 2019

12 Commments

OK, I called up the box score, and it’s plastered with ads for that loser wearing #3 who just endured his first of 13 seasons rotting in hell behind the Nats in the standings. Ha!

Yet Strickland last night made me lament that awful trade with Seattle even more. Statistically, Harper’s season is nearly identical to a year ago–but with more Ks and fewer BBs. Indicates to me that despite his relative youth, his batting eye is already starting to slowly deteriorate, especially since he now plays in an extremely hitter friendly park.

Agreed, the ballpark factor should have been worth 10% hitting in that park with the high school dimensions.

They will be around for another year or two but this year Strickland & Elias have been worthless.

Sure would be nice if Koda was healthy next season giving Strickland ‘s stuff a different look.

Eugenio Suarez if he played in Nats park would hit 25 HRs not 49 as in matchbox GAB Cindy
A salute to the wonderful broadcaster Marty Brennenan all those summer afternoons and evenings listening to the Big 700 WLW with Marty and Joe Nuxhall bringing so many games “ round third and heading for home “. Thanks for all the years ,Marty. A true HOF you are.

Garcia is now 10 for 23 over five games. SSS, but it’s an eye-opening start for him. Hope Banks and Freeman can start making more contact. Good for Reetz for getting off to a good start as well. Freeman and Reetz spent the entire year at A+ (except for a playoff cameo) so really haven’t faced AA-quality pitching.

Realistically, since he lacks the arm to be a superutility player or the power bat to be an everyday player at the highest levels, Freeman’s path to the majors is likely as a speedy bench bat/pinch-runner who can stay in the game if needed after subbing in and do a passable job.

I’m still not sure what we have with Reetz. Would love to see him flourish in Harrisburg next year, he’s still only 23.

Player of the Year: Yadiel Hernandez
Pitcher of the Year: Tim Cate
    Bob Boone Award: Jakson Reetz
Defensive Player of the Year: Luis Garcia
Baserunner of the Year: Cole Freeman

I think those last two awards are new?

São these are for real awards or your heart felt opinions ??

Should be fun to see a future infield with Garcia , Carter K , Turner and maybe some Wilmer on utility . Rendon won’t get paid by Lerner’s this off season . Rangers need a home guy to sell tickets for the new ball park sprouting up in big D …..
