AFL Update: Nov. 1, 2017

November 1, 2017

Mesa got two in the bottom of the 5th to take a 2-0 lead but it was all Scottsdale after that as they scored six in the 6th en route to an 8-2 win.

Just one National saw game action – Daniel Johnson, who drew a walk in four PA’s as the Solar Sox DH. Johnson, who got off to a 10-for-27 start in his first six games, has cooled down to a .277 BA with 1-for-16 spell since.

The loss dropped Mesa to 10-8 in the AFL East, which is a ½ game better than 9-8-1 Scottsdale. They’ll take on the Surprise Saguaros today and tomorrow before finishing up Week 4 on Friday in Scottsdale.

As noted in the comments, the AFL did not bother to pretend the Fall Stars game rosters were related to this season as they named Victor Robles to the East team as the sole Washington player on the roster. The game will be televised on MLB Network. There is no word on which announcers you will have to suffer through if you’re unwilling to mute your TV and/or put on closed captions.

Baseball America has its latest Nats top 10 prospects:

    http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/2018-washington-nationals-top-10-prospects/

Seven of the 10 have yet to see AA or AAA, with six of 10 not even seeing Potomac.

This list reminds me of the 2007-2009 era, where being young and a high draft pick mattered most.

Luke getting over head cold. I just surfed to BA transactions to see
Clint walked and Bryan ( city isle bound?) Meijia re- inked.
Harrisburg could have a heavy LH lean? Sagdal, Ward, Meijia and Davidson joining Masters , Lora and Abreau on infield ? Meijia could play some LF in BURG?

Mejia slashed .234/.270/.319 in his second tour at Potomac. Very hard to see what he’s done to get promoted. He looked like a prospect as of 2015, but he’s just fighting to stay in baseball now. Lora hasn’t been all-world, but he’s a couple of years younger than Mejia and hit a bit better.

Look at Stephen Perez hanging around with his Mendoza line .
We could make a case for Adrian Sanchez given much
Rope to grow especially since He is Rizzo find and sign

Perez got a “social promotion” because the organization was/is so desperate with its middle infielders. Not an example I’d cite as a positive. More of an example of the black hole of middle infielders. Sanchez is an example that will be held up of guys who finally have something click if they keep grinding. He really deserved the Bob Boone Award for that grinding success.

But man, they haven’t had much success in the upper levels with middle infielders. Renda and Bostick both have sorta made the majors after trades but never really had a high ceiling. Higher picks like Kobernus and Hague never really panned out, although Kobe at least got a cup of coffee. Difo has had a roller-coaster ride but seems to have found enough to stick on an MLB bench. Sanchez has become a feel-good story but probably will be headed back to Syracuse. Trea came in a trade so can’t really be claimed as Nats-developed. Perhaps the cavalry is on the way with Kieboom/Antuna/Garcia. None of them particularly need to stick at SS because Trea should be there for years.

I wonder if TimRaines will readjust his opinion on trea Turner the most exciting player to watch when MrRobles takes his skills full time to Nats big club.
Good to see Kelvin G add 3 hits to his fall play. Gushue should love hitting @ Burg next season .

Yes Perez was promoted due to dearth . Meanwhile Gushue could prove Rizzo right on flipping Bostick.

The BA list also looks like an indictment of most of the recent drafts up to 2016. Fedde is the only player on it who isn’t an international signee (five of them on the list) or wasn’t drafted in the last two years.

Very interesting in 6 months to see
How the rehabbing arms bounce back : Joe Ross, T. Lee, Aaron Barrett , Tim Collins , Nick Lee… Taylor Mapes , who some say is very badly hurt??

I’m excited to see Tim Collins make it back to the majors. He is fantastic when healthy and a really good story too.

I know off season rosters don’t mean anything : but did Clint Robinson leave the org signing
    Elsewhere ?

CRob elected free agency, as did Jacob Turner.
