Preseason Update: Apr. 4, 2022

April 4, 2022

Hopefully this will be the one and only of these this week – a few quick hits until we hear about the rosters. ●   Andrew Stevenson has indeed taken the Hobson’s choice given to him by the Nats and will return to Rochester… again. In what ought not to be a small surprise, OF Gerardo Parra …

Cavalli Among the Latest Spring Training Cuts

April 2, 2022

Cade Cavalli was the top prospect officially sent to the minor-league camp, but the move was perhaps overshadowed by the highly questionable decision to outright a 27-y.o. defensive stalwart (Andrew Stevenson) ahead of a trio of 34-y.o. OF’s (Dee Strange-Gordon, Yadiel Hernandez, Gerardo Parra).

Also re-assigned to minor league camp were relievers Carl Edwards Jr. and Jace Fry, plus catcher Chris Hermann. All four are expected to begin the season with Rochester.

Cavalli was hit hard this spring, giving up 14 runs across three appearances and 8#8531; innings – including 11 runs this past Wednesday in two and a 1/3rd innings. He’ll return to AAA and look to improve on the 7.04/4.54/1.86 line in his last six starts.

Details on the final Red Wings roster were not divulged today. Rochester begins the 2022 season with a six-game series (yep, still the norm) at Toledo.

Catching Up on Transactions

April 1, 2022

While many of the names were repeated for some reason, BA issued another transaction post yesterday. Plus, there were two moves reported via MiLB.com.

RELEASED
●   RHP Andrew Karp
●   OF Jake Randa

ASSIGNED
●   RHP Tyler Clippard assigned to Rochester

OPTIONED
●   LHP Francisco Perez

As noted in the comments, MiLB’s Opening Day (4/7) is before MLB’s for AAA (4/5) – the RedWings media day is tomorrow, the FredNats is on Tuesday – so we’re likely to get a bead on who will be where as early as tomorrow for Rochester and perhaps Tuesday for the other three.

Rochester and the ‘Burgs open on the road (Toledo, Altoona, and Delmarva respectively) while Wilmington starts at home against Brooklyn.

Shifting Gears

March 29, 2022

Between the minors’ Opening Day being just a week away and yesterday’s cuts, it’s time to end the charade and cross our fingers that 2022 will be better than 2021. And I do not mean the big club. For the MASN Commenters who may have stumbled upon this site after light dawned on Marblehead, just …

Nats Lose Again, 8-1; More Cuts

March 28, 2022

The Nats picked up where they left off on Saturday and promptly dropped their sixth straight game, 8-1 to the Marlins. Patrick Corbin pitched five full innings and was charged with four unearned runs on the second of two (2) errors by 1B Josh Bell. He gave up two singles in between a strikeout that …

Nats Drop Fifth Straight, 4-2

March 26, 2022

A 2-0 lead early went bye-bye in the middle innings as the Nats were once again unable to answer in a 4-2 loss to the Mets – their fifth straight defeat and seventh in eight spring training games.

Erick Fedde was easily the brightest spot, as the erstwhile starter went two and 2/3rds scoreless inning, allowing one hit, two walks, and striking out two. He threw 60 pitches, 36 for strikes.

Lane Thomas accounted for both Washington runs and two of the four (4) hits on the afternoon, with a two-run HR breaking the 0-0 tie in the top of the 4th. Keibert Ruiz also singled as did Jake Noll off the bench.

No watchlist players appeared in the game.

The Nats return to action on Monday afternoon as they host the Marlins in West Palm Beach. Patrick Corbin is expected to make his second appearance of the spring while Miami has yet to announce its starter.

The game will be broadcast on MASN and MLB Audio.

Cavalli Hit Hard in 5-4 Nats Loss

March 26, 2022

The Cards got to Cade Cavalli for three runs in the 2nd and two off Mason Thompson in the 5th in another Nats loss, 5-4. Washington’s #1/#2 prospect set the side down in order in the 1st on a pair of K’s and flyball to right, but ran into trouble in the 2nd. St. Louis …

So Long, Boys

March 25, 2022

Unfortunately, this is the time of the year when we learn for sure who’s not coming back this summer. Yesterday’s transaction post from Baseball America had the following releases:

  • RHP Frankie Bartow (Harrisburg)
  • RHP Michael Mariot (MLFA)
  • RHP Jose Marquez (FCL)
  • RHP Jose Mercedes (FCL)
  • 2B Brian Klein (FCL)
  • IF RobertAnthony Cruz (FCL)
  • OF Jorge Hurtado (FCL)

There are no real surprises here. All but Mariot were Nats draftees or IFAs and only Bartow had played north of Florida.

Astros Outslug Nats, 10-8

March 25, 2022

A grand slam in the 5th turned out to be the decisive blow as the Astros outslugged the Nats, 10-8 Starting Washington pitcher Josiah Gray pitched into the 4th but was dinged for two runs (one earned) on two doubles over three and a 1/3rd innings. He struck out five but walked none. The loss …

Nats Lose Again, 3-2

March 24, 2022

Juan Soto homered in the 1st to give the Nats an early 1-0 lead. For five innings, LHP Patrick Corbin (4IP, 3H, 0R, 0BB, 4k) and newly signed RHP Steve Cishek (1IP, 1H, 0R, BB, 0K) conspired combined to shut down the Marlins. Alas, Kyle Finnegan was not in on the gameplan as Miami got …
