Nats Drop Spring Opener, 8-3

March 19, 2022

The Nats picked up where they left off in October, giving up two homers and struggling to score in an 8-3 loss to the Marlins. Josh Rogers got the start and served up the first longball in the second of his two innings pitched for the “L.” Recently signed FA Erasmo Ramírez (and former Tiger) …

Let The Games Begin

March 18, 2022

Ordinarily, this about the time that I stop the charade of covering spring training. Instead, thanks to the owners, we’re just beginning. As it’s been for quite some time now, there’s not much drama in terms of prospects. Sure, some folks (*cough* Baseball America *cough*) want so desperately to include Luis García in that mix, …

Catching Up on Transactions, Offseason Updates

March 16, 2022

Sorry I’m a little late with this; had to go to the dentist yesterday morning. For those of you who don’t do that regularly, well, you know the drill… Baseball America put out its first transaction post in three weeks, from which we’ve learned the Nats have made some minor-league signs: RHP Carl Edwards RHP …

Will the MLBPA Eat Their Young (Again)?

March 11, 2022

While most people are celebrating the reported end of the MLB lockout, a more careful reading of the details reveals a key—and unresolved—point: whither the International Draft? The next generation, after all, is what we’re focused on here. And the MLBPA’s track record is not good when it comes to looking out for the players …

Offseason Update: Mar. 8, 2022

March 8, 2022

Yep. Still here. Still waiting. Now for some updates… ●  As semi-predicted (srsly, this was like saying “I think the sun will rise in the East”), minor-league spring training appears to be going on as usual, with little-to-no access for fans. ●  MLB has quietly postponed Spring Training to March 18, and will likely do it again …

Offseason Update: Mar. 1, 2022

March 1, 2022

Not much news to pass along, as it would appear that everything right now hinges upon the negotiations between MLB and the MLBPA to end the lockout. The owners’ fake deadline was moved from yesterday to today, so it’s entirely possible by the time some of you read this that there will be some progress… …

Transaction Update

February 22, 2022

I had been hoping that when Baseball America got around to updating its transaction page, which, unlike MiLB’s is still functioning, there’d be something that wasn’t reported elsewhere. Alas, this was not the case as it usually is. So, for those of you who regularly check the Big Nats’ transaction page, this is old news: …

Watchlist Reports Are Finished

February 16, 2022

Just a quick note to let you know the lights are still on I’ve made my sweep, and as predicted, made just a few small tweaks.

The donuts have been made. And now we wait Forrest Gump pause again.

This could be particularly painful because what gets us through the last six weeks of winter is spring training, and it’s just been officially delayed.

Given MLB’s Stalin-esque treatment thus far – the MiLB transaction pages are still “down for scheduled maintenance – I don’t have much hope for much coverage of the minor-leaguers in March, but I hope I’m wrong.

Initial 2022 Player Reports Completed

February 11, 2022

Unlike years past, this post comes after the prospect book(s) is(are) in hand and perused. I’ve yet to go back over what I’ve written and adjust to what new info is now available. I suspect the edits will be minimal, mostly to the second-tier players that BA has ignored but others have not. Yesterday, MLB …

The BA Prospect Handbook, Part Three

February 4, 2022

Ordinarily, I break this up into two posts because this is a slow time of year. But the expansion from 30 picks to 40 gives me an excuse to draw this out to three! Without further ado: 31. RHP Seth Shuman 32. 1B Drew Mendoza (10) 33. RHP Richard Guasch 34. OF T.J. White 35. …
