AFL Update: Oct. 29, 2023

October 29, 2023

Trey Lipscomb’s RBI single in the top of the 4th erased an early 1-0 deficit but that’s the closest the Scorpions would get as the Saguaros doubled ’em up, 4-2 last night in Surprise.

Lipscomb, who batted 5th in the Scottsdale lineup, would finish the game at 1-for-3 and get off the Interstate for a .203 BA. Defensively, he had just one assist.

Robert Hassell was the Scorpions’ leadoff man and played left field, where he snagged two lineouts and chased down a double. At the plate, he was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Israel Pineda batted third and caught the game but went hitless in three trips to the plate.

The two teams will rematch tomorrow in Scottsdale.

Robert Hassell was the only National to appear in the lineup for Scottsdale. He started in left field and went 2-for-5 with a run and two RBI while making two putouts on defense.

The Scorpions are off until tomorrow night, when they return to Scottsdale to host the Salt River Rafters.

AFL Update: Oct. 20, 2023

October 20, 2023

Three Surprise pitchers combined to shut out Scottsdale, 3-0 on three hits, which ended a modest two-game win streak.

Just two Washington Nationals appeared in the game:

● Trey Lipscomb started at shortstop and batted sixth, but went 0-for-3 with a strikeout. He had two putouts and three assists on defense.

● Robert Hassell went back to right field but was also hitless, though he drew a walk in the top of the 8th. He snagged three flyballs in the field for the Scorpions.

This afternoon Scottsdale will see how it plays in Peoria, with the winner (if there’s not another tie, natch) taking sole possession of first place.

AFL Update: Oct. 19, 2023

October 19, 2023

The metaphorical beer was handed back and forth between the Sagauros and the Scorpions as a 7-2 lead went poof in the 7th, then an 8-7 lead went buh-bye in the 9th as the Scorpions literally walked off with a 9-8 win. DJ Herz’s third AFL start was much like his first, as the 22-y.o. …
