Tuesday’s News & Notes

July 14, 2026
Team Yesterday Today Pitching Probables
Rochester ALL-STAR BREAK ALL-STAR BREAK N/A
Harrisburg ALL-STAR BREAK ALL-STAR BREAK N/A
Wilmington ALL-STAR BREAK ALL-STAR BREAK N/A
Fredericksburg ALL-STAR BREAK ALL-STAR BREAK N/A
FCL Nationals Lost, 4-1 @ FCL Mets, 12pm
DSL Nationals Lost, 6-2 @ DSL Mets Blue, 11am

Rochester Red Wings, 8-10, 8th I.L. East, 6GB – 53-38 Overall
The Red Wings led in four of the six games against the (ugh) Woo Sox but won just two of six as the Magic-8 Ball approach to the starting rotation is no longer working. Allegedly, this is to keep a supply of arms for the big club to dip into (and given that there has been a DC/ROC transaction roughly five times a week) but it would seem rather obvious that none of the current, consistent starters have a chance of making the big club for more than a spot start. Roster move: OF Robert Hassell outrighted from Washington.

Harrisburg Senators, 9-7, 4th E.L. Southwest, 4GB – 43-42 Overall
Harrisburg won the first three against Erie, then lost the next three, which probably shouldn’t be a surprise for a team that has mostly broke even all season. SSDL to a certain extent as 17 different pitchers have made a start this season for the Senators. Unlike Perales, Alex Clemmey has made progress this year, having seen the 6th inning nine times in 18 starts and walked three or fewer batters twelve times. The second-half question: How much longer before he gets to AAA? Roster move: RHP Billy Sullivan released.

Wilmington Blue Rocks, 11-10, T4th Place Sally Lg. North, 2GB – 42-44 Overall
The Blue Rocks are on a four-game losing streak and return home to face the cellar-dwelling BlueClaws this weekend. As per usual, the team remains unable to hit, but is actually scoring MORE runs at home (5.08) than on the road (4.94). Unfortunately, the difference in runs allowed has been a factor, with a 3.67 ERA at home and a 5.31 ERA on the road. Both of these factors explain the difference between Wilmington’s record at home (23-15) on the road (19-29).

Fredericksburg Nationals, 11-10, T2nd C.L. North, ½ GB – 57-30 Overall
The FredNats broke even on their final two-week road trip of ’26 and return home this weekend to play the Hill City Howlers. There’s no secret to Fredericksburg’s success: They’re averaging more than a full run on offense (6.30 vs. 5.28) while having the third-best pitching (4.72 R/G). The good news is that the batters are AATL (20.7 vs. 203) but the pitchers are full year older than the (23.0 vs. 22.0).

FCL Astros 4 FCL Nationals 1
• Irvin 3IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 3K
• M. Medina 3IP, 4H, 4R, 4ER, 1BB, 0K
• German 1-3, R, HR(5), RBI
• N. De La Cruz 1-3

Jake Irvin’s emergence from witness protation only forestalled the inevitable as the FCL Nationals were taken down by the division-winning FCL Astros. Irvin threw three scoreless innings, walked none, allowed one hit, and struck out three. Maximin Medina gave up all four F-Astros runs on four hits and a walk over the next three innings. Marcon German broke up the shutout and no-hitter with his fifth HR, while Nauris De La Cruz, Eyeksson Rojas, and Luis Arias each had a single. Roster move: RHP Jake Irvin assigned from Washington for MLB Rehab.

DSL Giants Black 6 DSL Nationals 2
• Sarit (L, 2-3) 4IP, 2H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 4K, 4WP
• E. Hernandez 1IP, 1H, 0R, 1BB, 2K
• Serrano 1-3, 2B, SB
• J. Castillo 1-3, 2RBI

The D-Nats trailed from start to finish as the D-Giants Black tripled them up, 6-2. Ranger Sarit lost for the third time with two runs let in two hits, two walks. He striuck out four and threw four wild pitches. Junior Castillo drove in both runs with one of the three (3) singles by the DSL Nationals while Samil Serrano collected the only extra-base hit, a double.

The release of Sullivan was not a surprise. I can’t recall him having a good outing once.

    Here’s what I think I know:

    – Mikolas is going to serve his suspension starting after the break. He is not listed on the Nats active roster.
    – So the Nats are listing 25 players on their active roster (11 pitchers and 14 position players)
    – I figured the A. Ortiz call up was just for 1 game, to get his LH bat in there and go with 12 pitchers in a game before the ASG. CBS Sports.com is reporting that A. Ortiz has been optioned, but he is still listed on the Nats active roster.
    – I expect them to get back to 13 pitchers for their next game on the 17th. To do that they need 2 pitchers. One or both could be Kranick and T. Williams, as they are both going to the FCL for rehab duty during the break. It doesn’t seem that Cole Henry would be available due to being on IL. Maybe Varland comes back from exile. Lovelady would be eligible but I presume they want to do rehab with him.
    – There are two 15-day DL people (Brad Lord and Lovelady) and I do not think there would be a desire to shift them to 60-day to make room on the 40.
    – To get Kranick or T. Williams (or J. Irvin) on the Nats 40 man roster move(s) would need to be made.
    – Another move the Nats made was to put Andry Lara on the Dev list. This could be just a procedural thing or reflective or his overall struggles at AAA.

It’s my understanding that the Nats will only play with a 25 man roster for the A’s series as you do not get to fill a roster spot when a player is inactive due to a suspension. The Nats played with a 25 man roster for the Astros series and the first two games of the Yankees series because of Cavalli’s suspension. Now, they must do the same for Mikolas’ suspension. So, I think only one pitcher gets the call for the A’s series to replace Ortiz.

According to Baseball America, the Nats have signed the following UDFA after the 2026 MLB draft:

    Cooper Carlgren, RHP, Lamar
    Ciaran Caughey, RHP, Kent State
    Trevor Moore, RHP, Stanford
    Tony Neubeck, LHP, Indiana
    Tyler Papenbrock, LHP, Louisiana
    Miles Smith, RHP, Kansas State

Guess pitching is a perceived need for the organization.
