Seth Shuman’s struggles continued as he was hammered for all nine runs—seven in the 1st!—in a 9-1 Rochester loss to Worcester. Since throwing back-to-back quality starts against Durham, the 27-y.o. has given up 22 runs on 23 hits over 11 innings across three starts. Brady Lindsly broke up the shutout bid with an RBI in the 5th as the Red Wings managed seven singles, no walks, and one double.

The sun may not shine on the same dog’s @ss all the time, but don’t tell Carlos De La Cruz, who hit another two-run homer to walk off the Fightins, 7-6. Hyun-Il Choi fell victim to the longball despite the wind blowing in, giving up two to account for all five runs he allowed over five and a 1/3rd innings. He walked one and struck out four. Garrett Davila picked up the win with a goose egg in the 9th. Kevin Made and Seaver King both singled twice to lead the Harrisburg hit column.

Travis “Sunday” Sthele tossed a one-hit shutout on 85 pitches in a 2-0 Wilmington win over Brooklyn. The 23-y.o. allowed no walks and struck out two and needed only 85 pitches to get 27 outs in his first nine-inning out of his career. Gavin Dugas, Matt Suggs, and Jackson Ross each had a double in the Blue Rocks’ two-run rally in the 7th to break up the Star Trek convention on the Frawley Stadium scoreboard. Elijah Nunez led the Wilmington hit column with two singles.

Yoel Tejeda turned in seven innings of one-run ball while Luke Dickerson hit his first second Low-A home run as Fredericksburg stopped a four-game slide with a 3-1 win over Delmarva. Tejeda allowed the Shorebirds run on five hits, walked none, and struck out five to get the “W,” his second. Merrick Baldo worked around two walks in the 8th for the hold while Robert Cranz did the same with one walk in the 9th for the save. Nate Rombach doubled while Sam Petersen and Randal Diaz each had a single as the FredNats squeezed three runs out of four hits and four walks.
What a unique stat line from Sthele! You don’t see a 1 hit shutout with only 2 Ks everyday! Interestingly, he had a 6 IP, 1 H, 2 K performance earlier this season.
Elijah Nunez has been very quietly have a really good stint in Wilmington. He’s now hitting .288/.431/.385 in 14 games. His “promotion” to A+ wasn’t at all deserved (posted a .631 OPS in A), but glad to see he’s making the most of his situation.
Robert Cranz now has an 11 G, 14 inning scoreless streak. In that span, he’s only allowed 2 total hits and 5 BB for a miniscule 0.50 WHIP. I don’t know why/how he didn’t get promoted in the most recent promotion carousel, but he’s earned it, especially as a 7th rounder with a bit of buzz.

two games in a row King has come up with two men on and attempted to bunt them over. is that really what we should be doing with a top prospect? Tuesday he failed twice before hitting a single up the middle and yesterday was awarded a single when the pitcher threw to the base where no one was covering. come on Delino, let the kid hit!

Do they? There’s been 132 bunt hits in 69,145 plate appearances in the majors this season. It’s not exactly a useful trait to have.
Also, in the best case scenario it yields you a single, whereas leaving King to swing away provides you with far more valuable outcomes than a single.
Interestingly, you know who the major league leader in bunt hits was last season? Jacob Young with 11. Young might be one of the few batters that should bunt, because even if he’s swinging, his most likely outcome is still a single. But King has much more power (at least in theory) that should bar him from bunting. Let him learn how to do that in batting practice.
