• Cate (W, 1-0) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Hill 1-3, BB
• Rutherford 1-3, BB (14G hit streak)
A tense pitcher’s duel ended on a botched sacrifice as Scranton/Wilkes-Barre threw this one way for a 2-1 Rochester win. Jackson Rutledge went five scoreless innings with two hits, three walks, and seven whiffs. Tim Cate, the fifth reliever out of the ‘pen, picked up his first AAA win with a 1-2-3 tenth. The Red Wings mugged two paperboys for four singles, with Derek Hill and Blake Rutherford each drawing a walk. Roster moves: IF-OF Travis Blankenhorn added to 40-man roster, recalled to Washington; RHP Amos Willingham recalled to Washington; 1B-OF Frankie Tostado reassigned from Harrisburg; RHP José Mujica reassigned from Harrisburg.
Binghamton 6 Harrisburg 5
• M. Cuevas (L, 3-7) 5⅔ IP, 4H, 1R, 1ER, 2BB, 4K, HR, PTV
• Knowles 1IP, 5H, 5R, 5ER, 0BB, 2K, HR, 2-0 IR-S
• Crews 2-5, R, 2-2B, 2RBI
• Hassell 2-5, R, 2B(15)
• Lipscomb 1-4, R, BB, SB
The Senators scored more than four runs for the first time in a nearly week… and still lost, 6-5 to the Rumble Ponies. All five runs came in the top of the 8th, highlighted by a two-run double—his second of the game—by Dylan Crews. Robert Hassell singled, doubled, and scored a run while Trey Lipscomb and Jackson Cluff both reached base twice with a single and a walk. Michael Cuevas took the loss despite giving up just one run on four hits (one HR) and two walks over five and 2/3rds innings. Roster moves: RHP Orlando Ribalta activated from 7-Day I.L.; IF Murphy Stehly reassigned from Wilmington.
Wilmington 3 Hudson Valley
• A. Lara (W, 6-8) 5IP, 6H, 2R, 1ER, 1BB, 2K
• Da. Díaz (H, 3) 2IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 3K, HBP, BK
• C. Romero (SV, 2) 2IP, 1H, 0R, 1BB, 1K, WP
• Made 1-3, R, BB, 2B, RBI, E
• Infante 1-2, 2R, BB, CS
Hudson Valley got to Andry Lara for two in the top of the 1st and then were shut down and out as Wilmington won for the seventh time in eight games, 3-2. Lara went five full innings and allowed six hits and a walk while striking out two for his sixth win. Dannel Díaz and Carlos Romero both turned in two scoreless to earn the hold and save, respectively. Kevin Made walked, doubled, and scored the deciding run while Sammy Infante singled, walked, and scored twice. The Blue Rocks drew nine walks and went 2-for-11 with RISP with 10 runners left on. Roster moves: IF Nick Shumpert activated from the Development List.
Lynchburg 13 Fredericksburg 1
• Tepper (L, 0-2) 2⅓ IP, 6H, 8R, 8ER, 2BB, 2K
• Schultz 2⅔ IP, 2H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 2K, HR, 2-2 IR-S
• Emiliani 2-4, 2B, E
• Vaquero 1-4, BB, E
An eight-run 3rd put this one away early as the Hillcats disemboweled the FredNats, 13-1. This was not a bowl of Life cereal for Mikey Tepper, who prolly didn’t like giving up eight runs on six hits and two walks over two and a 1/3rd innings for his second loss in as many starts. Leandro Emiliani had the sole extra-base hit as he went 2-for-4 with a double while Cristhian Vaquero and Marcus Brown both walked and singled to pace the seven-hit, five-walk offense. Roster moves: RHPs Austin Amaral, Mason Denaburg placed on the 7-Day I.L.; RHPs Anthony Arguelles, Bryan Polanco reassigned from the FCL.
Rutledge’s secondary pitches have really improved this year, fastball command could still be better.
Sens were getting carved up by the Ponies ace, hopefully their success in the eighth will carry over.
Lara showed good command if not overpowering stuff. Morales made a nice play getting the lead runner in the fifth to avoid loading them up.
You’ve watched a lot of Rutledge’s starts. Do you think he’s ready for an MLB debut in September?
I don’t see the harm in using him to spell some of those whose innings will be cut. if he trusts his stuff he can hold his own.
As Artie Johnson said as the Nazi in the Laugh In skit : verrryy in tah vesting !!
Johnny Di resigns
Some of us were calling for an Intl Latin shakeup ..
Jumping the gun on expectations , I wonder if Elementary Watson will suggest a few ole pals from Dodger days to Mike Rizzo .
Welcome to FRED, JEFrem Leon
Where did you go , Rodney Throphile ?
So overall pitching wise with all the disappointments in the farm with injuries , ceilings being hit with potentials
We see Irwin getting his feet squared away in the majors , Adon too , Gray makes All Star team
Gore getting his path forward
JR getting FredMD certificated ( lol )
Further thoughts : Troop has over 100 IP with an ERA which fits the
Nats way with starters working 5 IP on average .
Some NCAA alums who have to rely in control or their off speed pitches to get outs .
Good to hear Fred MD
Listen to the Doctor Doobie Bros
Good to see the 5 by 5 by 5 .
Worth saying : between Lara’s struggles growing pains and the pain of the Blue Rox offense in Grand Canyon Polo Grounds
Andry is still 6-8.
I guess some guys have earned the bump up .
Nats probably wanted to see Bryan Polanco in Fred at some time
Yes I am human
Blankenhorn sort of built like Matt Stairs .
Let’s see where the maturity level is with some of these Latin arms like Lara and Polanco
Nolasco raises an eye brow or two lately .
Sayanara from Tokyo .
A big surprise to see Blankenhorn get a promotion. After a pretty crazy hot streak in mid August, he’d fizzled out over the past 10 games, hitting only .154 over that stretch. But, who cares! He smacks a HR in his 2nd AB, and takes 2 walks. Really good first game. So many interesting players to watch on the Nats these days. Hope a bunch of them can finish September strong!
Also, nice to see Crews get a few hits, and get his AVG a bit closer to the Mendoza line. 8th inning excepted, the Senators are still struggling massively on offense, going on like 10 days now…
Good for Blankenhorn getting a look. I hope that Rutherford gets another look as well. Alu and Kieboom are getting significantly more action than Rutherford did, and he was better at AAA than either of them were. Better than Blankenhorn, too.
Good for Stehly for his promotion to AA. He’s had to wait behind prospects for playing time but has done nothing but hit when given the chance.
