Rochester blew an early 5-3 lead but rallied to tie at 8-8 with a two-run 8th. The Red Wings ‘pen coughed up a run in the top of the 9th and the offense got the tying and winnings run on base with nobody out. But a flyout and a double play ended it as they dropped No. 19 in a row, 9-8. Joan Adon picked up where he left off last month and was knocked from the box in the 4th after putting the first three runners on base without getting an out. He gave up six runs (five earned) five hits and two walks. Matt Cronin cordero’d around a walk and a hit while getting the last two outs of the 8th but was lifted after walking the leadoff batter in the 9th. Of course, that runner came around to score as Reed Garrett gave up singles to the first two batters he faced before rolling a double play and striking out former Nat prospect Kelvin Gutierrez. John Nogowski singled five times while Jake Alu walked, doubled, and homered to lead the Red Wings’ 15-hit parade.

The Senators had the misfortune of getting Luis Reyes on one of his good nights and thus were unable to extend their seven-game losing streak to eight, as the 27-y.o. tossed seven shutout innings to pitch Harrisburg to an 8-2 win. He also tied his season high of seven whiffs while walking two as he won his fourth game of the season. Omar Meregildo and Daniel Johnson both homered and combined for five RBI while Israel Pineda drove in two with a pair of RBI singles to lead the Sens’ offense.

Brooklyn broke open a 2-0 game with a six-run 4th and cruised to an 8-1 win over Wilmington. Rodney Theophile lost for the fifth time in ten starts for the Blue Rocks, giving up four runs on six hits and three walks over three-plus innings. Yasel Antuna broke up the shutout bid with a sac fly, following back-to-back singles by Robert Hassell and Drew Millas in the bottom of the 4th. Wilmington managed just six hits total with Ricardo Méndez the sole batter to have multiple hits.
Roster moves: IF Junior Martina released.

Augusta vs. Fredericksburg – PPD
The heavy rains that besieged the D.C. area during rush hour hit Fredericksburg, too, washing out the game and forcing a twi-night twinbill tonight.

FCL Nationals – OFF DAY
After Tuesday’s purge, the FCL Nats made a few more moves:

  • OF Jaden Fein released
  • RHPs Bernardo Hiraldo, Edward Urena transferred to full-season I.L.
  • C’s Jose Colmenares, Ivan Murzi; CF Daniel Marte placed on the 60-day I.L.

DSL Nationals – OFF DAY
It’s a road games today and Saturday for the D-Nats who are at .500 but are roughly two days away from being eliminated from the DSL South Division title.

  1. Farewell to Junior Martina. He was never able to recapture the magic of his 2019 GCL season where he hit .338/.461/.515. Disappointing, but that’s baseball.

    Farewell to Jaden Fein, we hardly knew ya! Fein was drafted in last year’s draft in the 15th round, and picked up a decent $125k signing bonus. 38 professional games later, he’s released. At least, he didn’t have to stretch that meager signing bonus across 4 poverty-stricken seasons, and should still have a good nest egg for whatever he chooses to do next in life.

    I’ll never really understand why some prospects get such a short lease, while others seemingly get 9 lives worth of chances (look no further than Harrisburg’s starter, Luis Reyes, who’s now in his 9th minor league season. Same could be said about Jefry Rodriguez).

    1. Pitchers who eat innings and are always ready to take the hill are needed. Those 2 guys never seem to get hurt.

        1. Holden Powell siting in F’burg. not much command, had to be pulled after 30 pitches and only two outs. he’s got some stuff however.

  2. Very quietly, Omar Meregildo just accomplished something no Nationals prospect has done in 4 years. He hit his 20th HR of the season! Can you guess who last hit 20+ HR? Answer will follow… While it’s true Meneses hit 20 before his promotion, and Yadi Hernandez and Brandon Snyder his 30+ in the thin air of Fresno and the PCL in 2019. All 3 of these guys were over 30 years old when they accomplished that feat, and had lost any semblance of prospect status long ago.

    But Meregildo is still 24 years old (turns 25 next week). While he was never much of a prospect, he’s displaying power this system hasn’t seen in a very long time, perhaps a decade ago with Matt Skole! (a player drafted by the Nats in 2011… let that sink in)

    Here’s to hoping he can keep it up, because now is a great time for a batter to catch a hot streak in the upper levels of the Nats system, which is almost completely bereft of any major league talent… He could find himself in Joey Meneses shoes quite soon!

    1. By the way, it was Rhett Wiseman, who last hit 20+ HR. He hit 21 HR in 2018. Before that? None other than the prodigal outfielder, Daniel Johnson, who hit 22 HR in 2017. And before him, Matt Skole with 24 HR in 2016 (and again 20 HR in 2015). In 2014, we had Keyes and MAT, and in 2013, Jason Martinson and Brandon Miller did it. That’s it. That’s a decade of power hitting prospects. At least MAT turned into a decent major leaguer…

      1. if we go back a little further, we see Tyler Moore’s feat of 31 HR’s at Potomac in 2010 followed by 31 HR’s at Harrisburg at 2011.

  3. Jaden Fein had a total of 116 AB’s for the Nats and they apparently saw enough. Good luck to him.
