Rochester 5 Buffalo 3
• Cavalli (W, 1-3) 5IP, 6H, 3R, 2ER, BB, 4K, HBP
• J. Romero (H, 1) 2IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Bonnell (SV, 2) 1IP, 0H, 0R, BB, 3K
• Bautista 1-3, R, HR(5), 3RBI
• Read 2-4, 2R, HR, 2RBI

Rochester lived by the longball as all five runs came via the home run in a 5-3 win over Buffalo. Cade Cavalli notched his first AAA win with a line of three runs on six hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out four. Three Red Wings relievers combined for four scoreless innings and eight whiffs. Rafael Bautista got the party started with an Earl Weaver special in the bottom of the 2nd, his fifth of the season while Raudy Read broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run shot in the bottom of the 5th – his fourth for Rochester and sixth overall. Roster moves: UT Adrián Sanchez outrighted from Washington.

Harrisburg 4 New Hampshire 3
• M. Sanchez 6IP, 8H, 3R, 3ER, BB, 5K
• Peguero (W, 1-0) 1IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K, HBP
• Lara 1-3, 2B, 2RBI
• Rhinesmith 1-2, 3B, SF, RBI

For reasons poorly explained, the Senators were batting last on the road and it was to their advantage as they walked it off in the 7th for a 4-3 win. Mario Sanchez allowed all three Fisher Cats runs on eight hits and a walk. He struck out five while registering his eighth quality start. Harrisburg drew three walks in the 7th and cashed them in with a Jacob Rhinesmith sacrifice fly and a two-out, two-run double by Gilbert Lara, which was the fourth of four hits by the Sens. Francys Peguero picked up the win as he worked around a leadoff single, a steal, and a Victor Robles in the 7th.

Bowling Green 10 Wimington 2
• A. Hernández (L, 4-4) 3IP, 2H, 2R, 0ER, BB, 5K
• M. Peña 1⅓ IP, 1H, 0R, 1BB, 1K
• Méndez 2-4, 2R, 2B, HR, RBI
• Pineda 1-4, RBI

Playoff-bound Bowling Green got its 80th win with a 10-2 decision over Wilmington. Alfonso Hernández took his fourth loss as he let in two unearned runs on two hits and a walk over three innings. Gilberto Chu took the brunt of the Hot Rods beating, giving up six runs over the next two and 2/3rds innings. Ricardo Méndez doubled, homered, drove in a run, and scored ahead of Israel Pineda’s RBI single to lead the Blue Rocks’ five-hit, one-walk barrage.

Lynchburg vs. Fredericksburg – PPD
The storms that had cellphones buzzing with flash flood warnings postponed last night’s game in Fredericksburg. They’ll make it up with a twi-night doubleheader tomorrow. Roster moves: RHP Karlo Seijas activated from Development List; RHP Cole Quintanilla placed on 7-Day I.L.

FCL Mets vs. FCL Nationals – CNCLD
Not the same storms, but almost the same result: A cancellation, which will force the FCL Nats to win both of its remaining games to finish at .500.

DSL Angels 8 DSL Nationals 7
• R. Lara 3IP, 5H, 6R, 4ER, BB, 3K, HR
• Zapata 4⅔ IP, 2H, R, ER, 3BB, 0K
• M. Diaz (L, 0-1) 1IP, 0H, 1R, 0ER, 0BB, 0K, HBP, 2-0 IR-S
• Cruz 1-4, 2R, HR, BB, RBI
• W. Diaz 1-3, 2BB
• Tejeda 1-3, BB, RBI
• 1-for-14 RISP; 7 LOB

The winning run scored on a double error as the runner, who was hit by a pitch, stole second, went to third on the catcher’s throwing error, and scored on the centerfielder’s throwing error back in/towards the infield.

Great win by the Sens last night!!
Here’s the explanation we got regarding the Sens being the home team. Since NH missed so many games with covid issues, the powers that be decided it would help the NH pitching staff by being the away team and not having to pitch the bottom of the seventh. Obviously, these decision makers hadn’t taken the Sens record into account when making this decision. Hoping to see the Sens end the season on a high note with a couple more wins this weekend!

      Fascinating 17 on 17
      Tetrault today

Thanks SensFan, that also explains the 7 inning decision.
Luke’s right about non explanation explanation.

Isn’t that stadium the old Nats short season A site. Just wondering.

Some really terrible defense for Wilmington with 6 (!!!) unearned runs.

Ricardo Mendez is finishing the season on a tear. His OPS at Wilmington is .857.

Read started in the Nat organization in 2011 and Bautista did in 2012, so their homers were definitely two blasts from the past.

Yasel “Hands of Stone” Antuna with his 34th error. He’s also hitting .150 in Sept. after .294 in August. Sigh. The Nats have some real conundrums over what to do with this guy. By all accounts, he has the physical talents. But things aren’t clicking for him, offensively or defensively.

Young Wil Cordero posted similar error numbers as a young lad .
He ended up in his right place .
Erik Tejeda still hitting near .290.
Cruz keeps getting run out as a table setter . Let the kids play and see where the chips land…

The former Nats short season team was in Vermont then moved to Auburn, NY.

Good to see Cavalli get a win at AAA, although he labored: 101 pitches in only five innings, with only 65 of those as strikes.

Interesting to see old friends A.J. Cole and Kyle Johnston in the AAA box score for the other team. Johnston has excellent numbers and should get a big-league look next year. No regrets for the Hudson trade, though.

In our own AAA bullpen, Rainey hasn’t surrendered a hit in four Sept. outings and only one walk. In his last three innings of work, he has K’d three in each appearance. He certainly looks ready to return to Washington, particularly considering the struggles of some of the stiffs they have been auditioning.

Mark, you made me look on Ricardo Mendez. He’s been a doubles machine, with 27 in 83 games across two levels this season. He’s certainly improved over his .194 average at the A level in 2019. He’s striking out 25.5% of the time, though, and has had extraordinary BABIP “luck” this year: .388 at A and .406 at A+. He has limited HR power and also limited SB numbers, so it’s hard to see what his real calling card is going to be. He seems to profile with an Andrew Stevenson ceiling.

Mendez would seem to be making himself a good candidate for the AZ Fall League.

Mendez is my minor league POY

        And Mendez is only 21.

House is in the lineup today, so no injury. They are in a rain delay.

Odd outing for Cavalli. Dominant first inning. Strikes out the side, and no batter gets past a two ball count.

No strikeouts and almost no swings and misses over the next 18 batters (9 of whom reach base), before striking out Kevin Smith with one out in the 5th.

Doimel Perez with his 2nd straight dominant outting. Through 5 so far with only 2 singles. 5 Ks and 4 popouts. He is also 17 like Agostini and Zapata. The most hyped pitcher of this age group was Arturo Rivas and he has been the only one to struggle. It will be i tetesting to see how many of these 17 year olds get a shot at the FCL next year. It would be like four HS draft picks.
