Friday’s News & Notes

August 24, 2018

Ladies, gentlemen, and lurkers – I’ve fiddled with a couple of the discussion settings in the theme, most notably the setting of a cookie to save your name/email. I was unable to replicate the issue yesterday. I tried multiple browsers (on which only one I am logged in) but comments were coming in normally. I’d really prefer not to change settings that would make it easier for a hit-and-run artist, require logins, or set up Disqus. The only other X factors that I can think of are browser-related (i.e. clearing your cache) and ad blocking.

Please keep us posted on your experiences – I’m also trying to avoid going to GoDaddy because invariably my problems always seem to only be solvable with an addition to my services.

Team Yesterday Today Pitching Matchup
Syracuse Lost, 3-2 vs. Rochester, 7:05 p.m. McGowin (1-2, 1.60) vs. De Jong (1-2, 3.68)

Potomac Won, 1-0 vs. Lynchburg, 7:05 p.m. Baez (7-9, 4.12) vs. McCarty (1-0, 0.69)
Hagerstown Won, 3-2 @ Lexington, 7:05 p.m. Cate (0-1, 9.00) vs. Lynch (5-0, 1.32)
Auburn Lost, 3-2 @ State College, 7:05 p.m. Irvin (0-0, 0.00) vs. Holba (3-2, 2.66)
GCL Nationals OFF DAY @/vs. GCL Mets, 12:00 p.m.

Lehigh Valley 3 Syracuse 2
• Adams 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Robles 0-3, BB, SF, RBI, K, CS(5)
• Marmolejos 1-4

Altoona 6 Harrisburg 3
• Sharp (L, 5-3) 3⅔ IP, 5H, 6R, 5ER, 2BB, 1K, HR, HBP
• R. Pena 2IP, 0H, 0R, 3BB, 1K
• H. Jones 3-5, RBI, SB
• Noll 1-3, R, BB

The Senators dropped their fifth straight as the Curve swept the two-game series with a 6-3 win. A grand slam was the killshot in Altoona’s five-run 4th as they sent Sterling Sharp to the showers with all six runs charged to him on five hits and two walks over three and 2/3rds innings He struck out one while losing for the third time at AA. Hunter Jones got three hits, the rest of the lineup got four though one was a two-run HR by Alec Keller. With the loss, Harrisburg trails Altoona by 8 games, Akron by 8½ with 11 to play for the wildcard and division respectively. Roster move: RHP Derek Self reassigned from Syracuse.

Potomac 1 Lynchburg 0
• Raquet (W, 3-3) 5IP, 3H, 0R, BB, 4K
• Braymer (SV, 2) 4IP, 1H, 0R, BB, 8K
• Sagdal 2-4, R, 2B
• Monasterio 2-4

Nick Raquet and Ben Braymer combined on a four-hit, 1-0 shutout of Lynchburg to prevent a series sweep. Raquet went the first five and gave up three hits and a walk while fanning four to earn his third High-A win. Ben Braymer finished the game with one hit and one walk allowed and struck out eight to notch his second save. Doubles by Ian Sagdal and Rhett Wiseman scored the lone run as Potomac collected seven hits total, with Sagdal and “the new guy” (Andruw Monasterio) both going 2-for-4 to lead the hit column.

Hagerstown 3 Lexington 2
• Stoeckinger 6IP, 5H, R, ER, BB, 5K, PO at 1B
• Bartow (W, 3-2) 3IP, 4H, R, ER, 0BB, 2K
• Freeman 2-4, R, 2B, E(16)
• Scudder 1-3, BB, RBI

The Suns got an RBI single from Jake Scudder and a sac fly from Anderson Franco to take a 3-1 lead in the 8th and held on for 3-2 win over the Legends in the series opener. Jackson Stoeckinger got the start and held Lexington to one run on five hits over six innings. He walked one and fanned five but got the no-decision. Frankie “Goes to Hagerstown” Bartow finished the game and wobbled through the 9th—two hits, error (his)—to pick up his third win. Cole Freeman singled, doubled, and scored run to lead the five-hit, three-walk offense.

State College 3 Auburn 2
• Schaller 5IP, 5H, 2R, 2ER, BB, 2K
• N. Ramirez (L, 1-3) ⅔ IP, 2H, R, ER, IBB, K, WP
• Shaddy 2-4, 2B, RBI
• Jo. Sanchez 1-3, BB

In the Nats organization, self-inflicted losses are de rigeur. Tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the 9th, Nector Ramirez gave up a single and a double with one out then issued an intentional walk to set up a double play. He struck out the next batter for the second out, then threw a two-out, walk-off wild pitch for a 3-2 loss to State College. Reid Schaller got the start and the no-decision with five innings of two-run ball on five hits and a walk while striking out two. Carson Shaddy was the sole Doubleday batter to collect multiple hits as he singled, doubled, and drove in a run. Despite five straight losses, Auburn still leads the NYPL wildcard race by a ½ game and trails Mahoning Valley in the Pickney Division by 1½ games.

GCL Nationals – OFF DAY
It looks like they’ll play two to complete the game suspended earlier this week, as the season ends tomorrow.

Happened to notice that the starter against Hags was Jackson Kowar, the collegiate starter the Nats probably passed on to take Denaburg. (Who?) Kowar has a .198 avg against, 1.13 WHIP. He’s going to be in the majors long before Denaburg . . . or Romero . . .

Nice starts from Raquet and Stoeckinger, the other big lefty starters from the ’17 draft. Hope Stoeckinger is bouncing back after his detour to Auburn.

Hooray, I can see my comment! Luke’s efforts to get things fixed must be working.

I was really hoping we’d draft Kowar or one of the other good college starters still available. A prep pitcher, especially one with known injury issues, is always a bad bet at the highest levels of the draft. Too high a bust rate.

I would have preferred Kowar. We’re told to trust them, though, that Denaburg has “top-10 upside,” or some such. We were told the same thing about Romero . . . and Giolito . . . and Purke . . .

    Great news on Raquet!
Remember when I was young that a 8-7 score was exciting. Now, I can’t think of anything more fun than a 1-0 game, where the game is in doubt until the very last pitch.

Braymer the one being bullpenned or just getting IP in?? Hmmmm

Am I the only one worried about Victor Robles struggles at AAA snd lack of power, XBH? I mean it still could be the wrist/elbow. But I heard someone from BA say he is not even a elite prospect in his opinion.

Carter Kieboom finds rhythm and then falls back like his last couple of games. 3 strikeouts yesterday. He hasn’t had prolonged success at AA yet.

No Garcia yesterday. Kid needed a break looked like he was starting to struggle a bit.

I think it’s fair to express some concern about Robles, but I don’t think “worried” should even be in play this season due to the severity of his injury. Think of Werth, Zim, and Harper and how slow they were to regain power after wrist/arm injuries.

Also, I should point out that Robles has ten hits over his last five games, so last night appears to be the outlier. He’s getting some mojo back. I expected some of the power to be missing due to the injury.

For his SSS at AAA this year, Robles has an excellent K rate of only 15% and an unsustainably good walk rate of 10.2%. So his plate discipline is still very good. His .308 BABIP is somewhat lower than he’s averaged at most of his minor-league stops, indicating that he’s been a bit “unlucky.”

KW do correct about wrists. Look at Cliff Floyd after his 1995 injury
Robles speed and other tools compensates for one in resurrection
Clubhouse sure missed Werth this summer .

Werth? No. Kendrick yes. Eaton earlier on? Most definitely! But the Geico Caveman has been a no show on the DL for the better part of 3 seasons and Kendrick and Eaton are both superior players with a lot of energy.

Haven’t posted for a long time because of glitch. (Been a faithful reader of site, however). Just checking it out now.
