Syracuse vs. Charlotte – PPD
They pulled the plug on this one several hours early due to wet grounds at the Chiefs’ home field in Syracuse. They’ll shoot make it up with a doubleheader tonight.

Harrisburg vs. New Hampshire – PPD
Rain washed away the opener between Harrisburg and New Hampshire. The makeup is scheduled for today with a doubleheader.
Roster move: IF Corban Joseph reassigned from Syracuse.

Potomac – OFF DAY
After a scheduled day off yesterday, the P-Nats have a chance to win back-to-back games for the first time in nearly three weeks as they open up a four-game series and homestand against the Hillcats.

Hagerstown broke up the Star Trek convention on the Municipal Stadium scoreboard with a three-spot in the bottom of the 8th then got out of its own way in the 9th for a 3-1 win over the Shorebirds. Suns starter Tyler Watson was lifted after 69 pitches and six scoreless innings. He gave up three hits and hit a batter while striking out four. Hayden Howard got the win with three hitless innings but walked two and let in an unearned run in the 9th (courtesy of a throwing error). The Suns managed just five hits but were walked seven times, with Jake Noll, Blake Perkins, and Daniel Johnson each reaching base twice. Roster moves: OF Telmito Agustin demoted from Potomac; OF Oliver Ortiz reassigned to XST.

  1. Good to see such strong outings from Watson and Howard. After a few rough appearances, Howard has been very good the last couple of weeks. Both of those guys are 6’5″ lefties, as is Jordan Mills. McKenzie Mills is a mere 6’4″. All but J. Mills have K/9s of over 9, and his is close.

  2. Interesting but not too surprising to see Agustin sent down to Hagerstown. As we were speculating a couple of days ago, the guess would be that Dan Johnson is the first to move up.

    1. Agree that the Nats will deal for bullpen help, but not a huge Robertson fan. He has pitched well so far this year, but over the last three years, his numbers have been trending in the wrong direction (1.346 WHIP/ 4.5 BB per 9 innings in 2016 – major red flag), and he is now 32 without elite velocity. Glover has better stuff, and want to see how he does with an extended trial as closer before giving up more prospects for a mediocre 32 year-old closer (and the commitment of another $13 million to Robertson for 2018). The Nats have breathing room right now; let’s see what other deals emerge.

      1. I’m also not a big Robertson fan. There’s still a lot of talk, though, about Glover just being a placeholder until the Nats deal for a “real” closer. We’ll see. The point I keep making is that I don’t see anyone who is going to be available who is significantly better than Glover. There are no Chapmans, Millers, or even Melancons who likely will be dealt this year. Well, the loser Giants could deal the real Melancon, but he’s a year older, has three more years on a big contract, and has a full no-trade clause that would have to be bought out.

        I’ve been a big Glover fan ever since he started blowing through the system. His stats are equal to, if not slightly better than, Robertson’s. Yeah, it would be risky to roll with a rookie closer with a contending team, but there are no sure things among closers. Even Chapman almost blew the WS last year.

          1. I do NOT want them to draft Seth Romero. I know he’s a Boras guy, but the Nats have a good track record of staying away from knuckleheads. Romero was suspended from the team multiple times for different incidents before being kicked off. He’s a serial knucklehead.

            Also, for the first time in a long time (if ever), the Nats actually have a flourishing crop of lefties on the farm, including the ones mentioned above. Luzardo will premiere at some point this summer, as will Ryan Williamson.

  4. Gotta think Tyler Watson’s star will continue to rise with an early summer promotion to Potomac. He’s got “Gio’s lefty replacement in 2019” written all over him and getting him to Potomac this year makes AA in 2018 a reality and the odds of a call-up in September of 2018 pretty likely.

    1. McKenzie Mills has actually been better than Watson this season in nearly every category, plus he’s a year older. I would guess that he would move up before Watson.

      1. Just to add, I don’t mean this as a negative about Watson. He’s the age of a college soph but has a 1.11 WHIP and 9.5 K/9 in full-season A-ball. I’ll take that every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

  5. Joe Nathan released. Kudos to him on a great career. I wonder whether Suero or Brinley will be moving up to Syracuse.
