Let’s try this again…

As previously reported, Syracuse (pictured above) has called it off for both yesterday and today, opting for doubleheaders on Sunday and Friday, August 4th to make up the games.

Temperatures at the games today are forecast to range from the low-to-high 40s – t-shirt & shorts weather for Minnesotans, but not conducive to baseball. In other words, don’t be surprised if one or more of these games is called off, too.

On a day that was a total washout (even for the big club that played, poorly), I’ll take a moment for an ode to Shawn Pleffner. He had a great ride for a 26th-round pick: five seasons in the minors, topping out at AA. He had a career .288 average and .362 OBP. Alas, he only hit 15 HRs over 1,857 plate appearances, a mortal sin for a corner bat. How could a guy who is 6’5″, 225 have no power?

Anyway, best wishes to him and all the others who are leaving us. Jeroloman is a lifer, having been playing minor-league ball since 2006. He’s almost 32. Heck, he played at both Auburn and Syracuse before they were even in the Nats’ system.

I second your best wishes for all the guys who depart baseball at the start of the season. You all accomplished more in the game than all but the tiniest fraction of the population ever will. I hope the memories sustain you for the rest of your lives, with no regrets. Have some kids if you don’t already, and perhaps your sons can make it to the Majors with your help.

Very weird that Potomac is going with a total Latin rotation, with none of the lefties, particularly Crownover. Frankly, on paper, there’s not a lot to look forward to there except Baez. Rodriguez was once a riser but has struggled for a couple of years.

The Potomac lineup will need to be scoring a lot of runs . . .

Interesting to see Franco playing first for Hagerstown with Neuse at third. Would give the Nats some good first base depth at the lower levels of the minors.
