AFL Update: Oct. 29, 2015

October 29, 2015

Drew-Ward-AFL-10-28-15One step up, one step back as the Rafters were shut out on three hits for a 2-0 loss to Peoria on Wednesday afternoon.

Just two Nationals saw game action — Drew Ward and Wirkin Estevez.

Ward (pictured to the right) went 0-for-3 in his first appearance since last Thursday. Ward participated in four double plays, two on offense and two on defense, where he racked four assists total.

Estevez gave up a run on a home run and also walked a batter in one inning. He threw 16 pitches, 10 for strikes but struck out none for the second time in as many outings.

The two teams swap venues with Salt River playing host tonight.

OK, so the first decision is out of the way. And looking on the bright side of things, the most challenging task for the manager between now and next season is to resolve the pitching staff questions. The only sure thing in the starting rotation is really Max Scherzer. Do you trade Strasburg or sign him and bet on a resurgence under Black? Do you trade Gio and keep a step ahead of his decline? Does Roark get back into the rotation? Do you sell high on Joe Ross now that he is hyped to bring in an even bigger star? How fast do you advance Giolito? What is the bullpen composition? Who gets resigned? Who gets signed? In that regard, his experience, and even with the Angels, is bound to be more instructive than would be another candidate of different pedigree.

GG if the small talk about the Cubs wanting to move
Schwarber to AL for an arm ( Sonny Gray) is true this winter
Then maybe Rizzo and Beane hook up on another deal
      ( Ross, Cole, Voth?)
      Reddick, Zobrist,
Conner Gillespie on a AAÀ / spring training invite?
Who replaces Cathcart on farm ? Barrett?
      Jason Camilli??

Okay, Forensicane, I have the answers. Of course! I do.
It starts with a blockbuster trade with San Diego. Storen, Strasburg, Escobar, Werth (we’ll cover half his salary) and possibly a prospect for Kimbrell and Tyson Ross. We then sign Heyward (yes, we could afford him, so don’t give me the ‘we’re saving it for Bryce excuse). Next we sign O’Day and voila we have a winner.
If the Strasburg trade doesn’t sit well with you, then try Chapman for Storen, A.J. Cole and another prospect such as Voth.
Hey, if possible, try to swing some kind of deal for Johnathan LuCroy too.
Yes, I would try Turner at short, Difo at second with Espi as a backup just in case. Imagine the speed and defense on this team. Sure could be exciting. (And I also think Turner can handle short. At least he’d be worth the try.)

I want to keep Voth to incubate in Stammen role

    Farm system .
