Neither Daniel Stange nor Zach Jackson could retire a batter in the 10th as four straight IronPigs reached base for a 2-1 win over the Chiefs. Stange walked two and gave up a single to open the inning before Jackson came on. The first batter Jackson faced bounced one high to Emmanuel Burris playing at the edge of the infield grass, forcing him to backpedal and fling a desperate throw that never had a chance to get the runner at the plate. All-Star Taylor Hill started and went six innings, allowing seven hits with just one run allowed, albeit on a solo HR. He walked one and struck out three. Burriss reached base four times from the leadoff spot with a walk, two singles, and a double as Syracuse was limited to just eight hits.

Ricky Hague’s three-run double capped off a four-run 8th as the Senators grounded the Flying Squirrels, 6-2. John Simms pitched into the 7th for his second straight start and let in just one run (same as before) on six hits and a walk while fanning five. He left with a 2-1 lead, which was lost in the top of the 8th when Richmond loaded the bases on a walk, single, and a fielder’s choice of Tyler Herron. The 27-y.o. struck out the fourth batter but let in the tying run on a sacrifice fly. Michael Taylor led off the 8th with a walk, took second on a sacrifice, and scored on Cutter Dykstra’s RBI single. Matt Skole, who drove in two in the 1st with a double, was intentionally walked. Richmond couldn’t get the DP on Kevin Keyes, then issued their eighth walk to Jason Martinson to set up Hague’s killshot, a line drive to the right-center gap that rolled to the wall to empty the bases.

Potomac might have been better off if they’d called this one as they were shut down on two hits for 4-0 loss in 7 innings as the game was twice delayed by rain. Ian Dickson technically relieved but practically started and was charged with three runs on four hits, including his 8th HR allowed. He walked none and struck out three. Richie Mirowski followed and gave up the fourth Blue Rock score on two hits and two walks over two innings. Shawn Pleffner doubled while Pedro Severino singled to account for the two (2) P-Nats hits.

The Sally Lg. Pitcher of the Week defended his “title” with a career-high of seven innings pitched as Hagerstown continued its season-long domination of Lakewood with an 8-1 win. Lucas Giolito allowed a run on a solo HR (his sixth in 61⅔ innings) and four hits total with no walks and five K’s as he picked up his fourth win of the season. Carlos Lopez and James Yezzo combined to go 5-for-10 with three doubles, three runs scored, and four RBI as the Suns marched to a 12-hit parade against two Lakewood pitchers. Rain stopped the game in the 9th and the game was called.

Mahoning Valley scored two in the 1st and made it stand up for 2-1 rain-delayed win over Auburn. Rain interrupted this one for 74 minutes after the 2nd, ending Drew Van Orden’s NYPL debut. The 5th Rd. pick was charged with the loss with two runs allowed on four hits and two walks with one whiff. Four Doubleday relievers combined for eight no-hit, no-run innings but the Scrapper pitchers were nearly as good, holding Auburn to two hits over eight scoreless frames before losing the shutout to Austin Davidson’s leadoff HR in the 9th.

GCL Nationals vs. GCL Mets — PPD
Another day, another rainout. According to MiLB.com, they’ll make ’em next week with doubleheaders on Thursday the 10th and Friday the 11th.

The D-Nats fell behind 1-0 in the 3rd then put up crooked numbers in three straight “ups” as they cruised to an 11-3 win over the D-Yankees1. Wilber Pena got the start and gave up one run on four hits and three walks while striking out five over four innings. Melvin Morel earned the win with four innings of one-hit ball, with one walk and two strikeouts. Andres Martinez, Gilberto Ramirez, and Jeyner Baez each had two hits to pace the D-Nats offense. The Nationals signed five 16-year-old position players to kick off the 2014-2015 International Free Agent signing period.
