AFL Update: Oct. 28, 2026

October 28, 2026

The Rafters used up all their runs on Monday as the Desert Dogs shut them out, 1-0 yesterday afternoon.

Jarlin Susana started and pitched five full innings, no-hitting Glendale for four and a 1/3rd innings before he gave up a double. He was charged with the loss as he let in the sole run on two walks in the 2nd despite rolling a 3-6-3 DP (presumably the runner on 3rd scored before the DP was completed). He struck out five, balked one, and threw three wild pitches.

Three Nationals appeared in the starting lineup

  • Kevin Bazzell began the game as the DH, batting fifth, but came on to catch the 8th inning after Salt River pinch-hit for the starting catcher. He went 1-for-3 and got hit by a pitch.
  • Teo Banks was the No. 6 batter and started in RF. He went 0-for-3 with a whiff and was caught stealing after beating out a would-be DP.
  • Elian Soto batted 8th and manned LF. He was 0-for-2 with a walk.

Salt River (10-9) visits Scottsdale (11-7) tonight.

On a day in which the other two games allowed 14 and 17 runs, holding the Desert Dogs to one run is very impressive, even if the bats didn’t show up. It’s also good to see Susana was relatively efficient, getting through 5 IP with 68 pitches. It was apparently his longest outing of the season: https://www.mlb.com/news/nationals-jarlin-susana-posts-longest-outing-since-2025-in-arizona-fall-league

There’s some good highlights embedded in the video too.

There’s also a good article about the top performers based on various Statcast data points in the AFL, and the lists are peppered with Nats players: https://www.mlb.com/news/arizona-fall-league-statcast-leaders-2026

Unsurprisingly, Susana has thrown the 34 fastest pitches in the AFL, topping out at 103.8 MPH. Insane.

More surprisingly, Jorgelys Mota, in his exceptionally short cameo, hit the longest HR (455 ft!!) with the 4th highest exit velocity (114.2 MPH).

Banks features at 4th in highest sprint speed (30.8 MPH), an interesting observation.

And Susana features in many other places, but notably (and unsurprisingly) for the spin rate of his slider.
