    After a summer of watching
Bullpen by committee ararts day after day
One has to wonder why the Young Turks didn’t take the oath of signing short term innings eating minor league free agent starts .
Granted the free agent pool might have been slim to none and skim left town

Gray has settled down since returning, but his still looks way down. His fastball yesterday was only 90.2 MPH, 3-4 MPH down from pre-injury. Gray was, however, efficient, getting through a perfect inning in only 10 pitches. It’s also interesting that they opted to pull him after so few pitches. Brass doesn’t seem interested in stretching him out. I’d have thought if being in the rotation were no longer viable, he’d be used as a long relief role, like Lord. But it seems not. Will be interesting to see how Gray develops.

Herz, on the other hand, looks to return to the rotation. He went 4+ last outing, reaching 59 pitches. His velocity is down too, but not so severely. He’s been sitting around 92 MPH, whereas pre-injury he was more like 93-94.

Mejia also looks more or less back. He hit 99 on occasion pre-injury, and was hitting 98 MPH last night. Really encouraging to see. It’d be great if he could get an addition to the 40 man before the month ends.

Lastly, very happy to see Yean return to DC. Not sure why it took so long!

Saw that Gray’s velo was down. Thought that may have been why the Red Wings pulled after 10 pitches.

that’s what he’s been hitting in every start I’ve watched.

I think the recent experience with Cavalli ought to keep us from drawing strong conclusions about pitchers’ early performance coming back from TJS, especially guys like Gray who’ve had setbacks. Let’s see what Gray looks like next year (if there is a next year). I had soured on him as a viable rotation piece even before he got hurt. I thought (and still think) he could be a viable bullpen piece.

Thinking about the 40. If someone has a list of people who are rule 5 eligible, that would be helpful:

Pitchers (22): Cavalli (sure), Alvarez (why not), Irvin (as innings eater, although they could part ways), J. Kent, Lord, Beeter (maybe not), Ribalta, Cornelio (I think), Perales, W Dion (left handed), K. Nicolas (he throws 100), Tolman (another hard thrower), Simpson (I think), Beeter (I think), Y. Cruz (throws hard), Herz, Early, Poulin (left-handed), Susana, Sykora, Grable (if necessary), Lyon (if necessary). I don’t have Gray, Parker, Sinclair, Lovelady, A. Lara, Krook, Kranick, Costgrove, Powell). Maybe Hartle if necessary. Dark horse candidate: E. Mejia, but I’d offer him a minor league contract. Expect Sykora and Ribalta to end up on 60-day which opens up spots. Do they have to take up 40-man spots in the off-season?

Catchers (4): Ruin, Ford, Millas, M. Romero (Riley Adams goes elsewhere).

Infielders (9): Abrams (a trade is possible), Nunez, House, A. Ortiz, Morales, Chaparro, Vivas (they seem to like him), C. Wallace, Lipscomb (is he a free agent?). I presume King does not need to go on the 40, and I chose not to include Tena.

Outfielders (5): Young, Crews, Lile, Wood, Pinckney. This is a small number but the 5th OF can come from the infield list. I didn’t see another OF who has to be protected.

    Whom have I missed?

Pretty sure Irvin and his career 5.03 won’t be anywhere near this team next year…not even the bullpen.

As for the others, none of the following should be back:

Parker, Lovelady, A. Lara, Krook, Kranick, Costgrove, Powell, Millas. Poulin.

I’m on the fence about Sinclair and Simpson.

The biggest wildcard is Gray – i honestly don’t know if he can make it back.

I personally think one of Crews or Young will be part of a package to get a pticher.

Best/fastest place to see rule5 eligibles is here:

      https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/depth-charts/nationals

“R5” in the “Options or R5 Status” field for any non 40-man roster player.

I also maintain R5 status for our drafted/IFA signed players on those two boards, though these won’t have R5 status for trade acquisition prospects.

    Ty Todd .
    Tolman and the healing technology
Piece he wears is one of the most interesting stories of the summer .
Gray might want to pitch winter ball under supervised over view to see how he bounces back by next spring .
In a rebuild his “ Uncke Salty “ background can come in handy .

In a summer of bullpen by committee nights
We should expect to see more
Chandler Champion types signed by “ the young Turks “ AI algorithm ( lol ) .
Meanwhile the rebuild includes the healing process of the handful of tall starters who were on 60 day full season DL .
The rebuild takes a different tact as the saying goes in sailing

Even in whatever numerical number the rebuild falls under with a Greek or Roman numeral used
The Nats would be Young Turk savvy to invite to spring camp some journey men starters or those with the soiled resumes of
Accepting two way situations between DC and Rochester .
    More Champions .
Chase Hampton comes to mind from the Rochester names faced all summer .

What with the list of arms coming off year long injury absences
Here is to Sales and Randall finding and trusting their stuff in 2027 to join some uppper tier pitching depth and consistency .
Line and Juan Reyes sure finished campaign strong
Will the young Turks in 2027 snip away of the talent left over from the previous regime ?
Do Teo Banks and J Mots elevate their games to help out at AA in 2027?

I think the big one we’re missing is Leandeo Pineda. Legitimate Phillies prospect, signed as an MLFA, and now putting up insane numbers in AAA. Unlike Lipscomb, whose xwoba is strangely terrible, Pineda’s is fantastic. And unlike any of our other candidates, Pineda will be a free agent if not added, which means (1) even if there’s no rule 5 draft, anyone can grab him, and (2) even if there is a rule 5 draft, it’s much easier to sign a player as a MLFA than it is to rule 5 one and keep him on the 25 man roster all year. Which is to say, if we don’t add him, he’s gone.
