Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 4 Rochester 2 – GM. 1
• Parker (L, 1-1) 4⅔ IP, 10H, 4R, 4ER, 0BB, 6K, 2HR, HBP
• Gott 1⅓ IP, 1H, 0R, 1BB, 2K, 1-0 IR-S
• Crews 2-3, 2R, HR, RBI
But for Dylan Crews, Rochester would have been shut out as the Nats’ #1 pick in in ’24 went 2-for-3 with a HR in a 4-2 Rochester loss to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Mitchell Parker did little to dispute the decision to send him down as the southpaw was lit up for all four RailRiders runs on ten hits (two HR) over four and a 2/3rd innings. He hit a batter, struck out six and walked none. The Red Wings drew seven walks but were 0-for-4 with RISP and left on nine.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 17 Rochester 4 – GM. 2
• Penrod (L, 0-1) 2⅓ IP, 3H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 4K, HR
• Montes de Oca ⅔ IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Crews 2-4, 2B, 2RBI
• Hassell 1-3, R, BB, RBI
In the “aftercap,” Crews added two more hits (one double) and drove in two, but it was for naught as the RailRiders had their way with Red Wings throw, er pitchers for 14 hits in a 17-4 demolition. Zach Penrod was the opener and was charged with one run on a home run and three hits total over two and a 1/3rd to take the loss. He walked one and struck out four. Robert Hassell, (BB, 1B), Harry Ford (HBP, 1B), and Andrew Pinckney joined Crews in reaching base twice.
Harrisburg 6 Altoona 5 (10 inn.)
• D. Garcia 4⅔ IP, 3H, 1R, 1ER, 2BB, 5K,
• Gaston (BS, 1) 2IP, 1H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 3K
• Linarez (W, 1-0) 1IP, 1H, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Boissiere 2-4, BB, 2RBI, SB
• Thomas 1-3, R, HBP
• King 0-3, 2BB, 2CS
Harrisburg couldn’t hold an early 2-0 lead but busted out for four in the 10th to take a 6-2 lead. That made a winner out of Valentin Linarez, who worked around a leadoff single in the 9th. Holden Powell did all he could to give back the lead, putting on four baserunners but only let in two plus the ghost runner to not lose. Branden Boissiere singled twice, walked once, and drove in two to lead the Senators offense.
Jersey Shore 19 Wilmington 5
• Bruni (L, 0-1) 1⅓ IP, 7H, 6R, 6ER, 0BB, 2K
• Boucher ⅔ IP, 1H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 2K, HR, 2-2 IR-S
• R. Diaz 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 0K
• Fitz-Gerald 3-5, 2B, RBI, SB
• Petry 2-4
• A. Feliz 1-1, 2BB
It’s never a good day when your most effective reliever is a position player, but that was the case in a 19-5 defenstration of the Blue Rocks by the BlueClaws. Frank Bruni threw 44 pitches, 32 for strikes – seven for hits as the 23-y.o. took the loss with six runs allowed on seven hits. He walked non and struck out two. Devin Fitz-Gerald singled twice, doubled once, and stole a base while Ethan Petry had two safeties to lead Wilmington’s nine-hit parade. Roster moves: RHP Eiker Huizi reassigned from Fredricksburg.
Fredericksburg 5 Augusta 3
• Portorreal 4IP, 4H, 1R, 1ER, 0BB, 4K, HR
• Olson (W, 1-0) 1⅓ IP, 0H, 0R, 2BB, 2K
• Roberts (SV, 1) 2IP, 0H, 0R, 2BB, 3K
• Walsh 1-3, R, 3B, RBI
• Dickerson 1-4, R, 2B, 2RBI
• Willits 1-4, 2B, SB
Fredericksburg was no-hit for six innings by Augusta’s Ethan Bagwell before the FredNats stung the GreenJackets bullpen for five runs in the 7th to take the season opener, 5-3. Leuris Portorreal gave up a run on home run and four hits total in his Low-A debut. He walked none and struck out four. Bryant Olson picked up the win with four outs across the 6th and 7th innings while Jacob Roberts closed it our with nary a hit nor a run in the final two frames.
Fredericksburg drew two walks and had a hit batsman and cashed them all in, highlighted by a two-run double by Luke Dickerson that broke up the no-no and shutout. Jacob Walsh sent him in with an RBI triple then scored on a Sir Jamison Jones sac fly. Eli Willits capped off the binge with an RBI double.
Ahhhh! Spring . Nuthin else to say except
Portorreal hmmmmmm
Super interesting looking lineup in Fburg. I guess when you have 6 shortstops on the roster you make due. Cruz at 2B, Willits at SS, Dickerson at 3B, James in LF, Fein in RF, Ramirez on the bench. Good problem to have.
And not a problem for long, especially when Wilmington’s lineup is littered with serial underperformers. #5-9 was Green, Mota, White, Nunez and Vaquero, who in typical fashion went a combined 2 for 20 with 13(!!!) strikeouts.
Am I reading that right, Montes de Oca appeared in both sides of a double header? That must be extremely rare for a pitcher, and quite strange in this era of sensitivity to pitcher health.
