Team Yesterday Today Pitching Probables
Rochester OFF DAY OFF DAY N/A
Harrisburg OFF DAY OFF DAY N/A
Wilmington OFF DAY OFF DAY N/A
Fredericksburg OFF DAY OFF DAY N/A
FCL Nationals OFF DAY @ FCL Marlins, 12 p.m.
DSL Nationals OFF DAY @ DSL Rockies, 11 a.m.

Rochester Red Wings, 10-2, 1st Place I.L. East, 2GA (48-37 overall)
As you might have heard by now, Brady House has been promoted to the Red Wings, which may have been foreshadowed by Carter Kieboom’s recent starts at 1B for Rochester. Statistically, this seems like a stretch: House has been hovering in the range of .230/.310/.420 with moderate power but a fair amount of whiffs (75K in 75G), albeit somewhat less over the last five weeks (20 in 28G). But, the Nats have pushed guys up that didn’t seem ready statistically a few times already this season and have been more or less right, though most have been pitchers.

Meanwhile, Rochester is riding a hot streak and leading the International League with a 10-2 mark in the second half. This week, they play the last full series before the All-Star break against Worcester, which includes a matinee on Wednesday. Roster moves: 3B Brady House promoted from Harrisburg; RHP Luke Farrell released.

Harrisburg Senators, 3-9, 6th Place E.L. Southwest, 6GB (41-40 overall)
The flip side to the House promotion is that a weak offense just got weaker. Harrisburg is currently on a four-game slide and has been shut out four times in the last 11 games with House. Kevin Made, acquired last July in the Jeimer Candelario trade with the Cubs, has been pushed up from Wilmington while Jordy Barley, acquired at the 2021 trade deadline, was released.

The Senators remain on the road, heading south to Richmond (hopefully not like Sherman) for six against the Flying squirrels. Roster moves: SS Kevin Made promoted from Wilmington; SS Jordy Barley released.

Wilmington Blue Rocks, 5-9, 5th Place Sally Lg. North, 6½ GB (36-44 overall)
The Blue Rocks broke even with Jersey Shore in their split home-and-home series that MiLB presumably created to assure both teams could have 4th of July nights. This week they’re back home to host the Cyclones for six, waiting for Diamond Baseball Holdings to make them an offer the Nats to send help from Fredericksburg.

Fredericksburg Nationals, 12-3, 1st Place C.L. North, 4GA (47-34 overall)
The FredNats are riding a nine-game win streak, including a six-game sweep of the Shorebirds. They return to Fredericksburg to host first-half champions Carolina with a chance to extend their four-game lead in the division.

FCL Nationals, 20-23, 3rd Place FCL East, 12GB
The FCL Nationals won three of five last week but only play four this week, and only once in West Palm Beach. Reminder: The FCL season ends on July 25, just nine days after the First Year Player Draft ends.

DSL Nationals, 9-15, 6th Place DSL Central, 10GB
The D-Nats won just once last week and have sunk into 6th place, three games out of fifth and two games ahead of seventh place. This week, it’s away games today and Saturday and home games tomorrow, Thursday, and Friday.

Jordy Barley was lightning fast but he never did hit. His OPS at Harrisburg this year was .550.

the promotions have a few things in common, they follow a prolonged stay at one level. Made 600 PA in A+, House 450 PA in AA. both have had moderate success. both are considered prospects.

had Hassell not had injury issues again you have to think he already been at AAA.

the recent stories regarding pitching (NYT) and the Guardians batting (WaPo) analytics have changed my thinking. I wonder what’s going on with the new leadership here.

there’s not much to promote to the Blue Rocks, the FNats hitting prospects are very young and struggling. TJ White may have to do it alone, at least among the prospects. Can continue his streak and salvage his season?

It’s important to remember T.J. White is still only 20 years old. He’s been on a tear the last 2-3 weeks.

There’s definitely a discernible shift to the broad development approach. The org has gotten much more aggressive with hitters, though this trend started last season (see: Pinckney and Morales finishing their drafted season in AA), even guys not exactly tearing the cover off the ball (Made and House). I still haven’t figured out the approach to pitching. Brad Lord’s ascent wouldn’t have happened in the recent past, but they’re still being rather cautious with regards to relief arms. I pointed out a few days ago a half dozen/dozen relievers repeating and dominating at their level. For example, Jack Sinclair has now thrown 59 games in Harrisburg and is currently sporting a 2.12 ERA/0.91 WHIP there in 2024. It took Orlando Ribalta 33 games of pretty dominant outings in Harrisburg before getting the bump to Rochester. But then Miguel Gomez got promoted from Fburg to Wilmington after 2 games earlier this season! So I’m not quite sure what the farm directors are looking for yet.

Jordy Barley’s name made me think of an old Scottish folk song about barley and alcohol, so whenever he’d come to the plate I’d say aloud, to no one at all, in an awful Scottish accent, “Jordy Barleycorn!”

    Farewell, Jordy Barleycorn.

The release of Barley was not a surprise. For the last week or so, he was playing with no effort and making simple mistakes.

Adon called up; Herz sent down to AAA, likely to limit Herz’s 2024 innings.
