Syracuse 9 Rochester 8 (10 inn.)
• Ureña 5IP, 6H, 3R, 2ER, 0BB, 9K, 2HR, BK
• G. Moreno (BS, 3) 1IP, 3H, 2R, 2ER, 1BB, 3K

• Downs 1-3, 2R, BB, HR(1), RBI, SB(5)
The Red Wings rallied for two in the top of the 9th, highlighted by Jeter Downs’s first HR of the season. Alas, that was far too small for Gerson Moreno to hold as he blew his third save to send it into extras. In the 10th, Daniel Mengden issued an intentional walk to the first batter and a single to batter #2 to lose the game, 9-8. José Ureña made his 12th start for Rochester and ate five innings, with three runs (two earned) on six hits, no walks, and a season-high nine whiffs. Derek Hill reached base four times, scored four times, stole two bases and drove in a run while Travis Blankenhorn walked twice and drove in the first run of the night with his 19th double. Roster moves: UT Jake Alu recalled to Washington; UT Jack Dunn reassigned from Harrisburg; RHP Rico Garcia assigned from Washington (DFA’d by Oakland, 7/10).

• Wood 1-4, R, HR, RBI
Three straight two-out hits by Richmond in the 3rd erased an early 1-0 lead by Harrisburg for a 2-1 decision that the Flying Squirrels held for the win. Cole Henry made another de facto rehab outing, tossing two perfect innings with two strikeouts. The loss went to Odalvi Javier, who gave up the aforementioned two-spot on four hits total over two innings for his first AA loss. Jacob Young and Trey Lipscomb both went 2-for-4 while James Wood accounted for the lone Senators run with his 7th HR at AA and 15th HR overall.

The Blue Rocks battled back from 2-0 down to tie it at 2-2 but were eventually shot down, 3-2 by the IronBirds. Andrew Alvarez turned in his second quality start, with two runs on six hits and a walk over six innings, and got another no-decision. The loss went to Jaren Zinn, who walked two of five batters faced, with an “assist” from Carlos Romero, who walked in the winning run before getting a strikeout to end the inning. José Sánchez got Wilmington on the board with an RBI single in the 4th while Nick Shumpert homered in the 5th to account for the two Blue Rocks runs.

• Ochoa Leyva 3-4, R, RBI

For two innings, the F-Nats shut out the F-Mets. The other six? Not so much. The FCL Mets handed the FCL Nationals an 8-3 loss to close out the week. Richard Guasch emerged from witness protection and “worked on some stuff” in the 1st, giving up a run on two hits and a walk while setting down two on strikes. The loss went to Gabriel Agostini with four let in on five hits and a walk over four and 2/3rds. He struck four and hit a batter. Nathaniel Ochoa Leyva led the F-Nats hit column with three singles, followed by Murphy Stehly with two. Zion Pettigrew and Cristhian Vaquero rounded out the seven-single barrhe with one apiece. Roster moves: RHP Richard Guasch asssigned from Harrisburg for MiLB rehab.
DSL Phillies Red 5 DSL Nationals 1
• Portorreal (L, 1-2) 3IP, 3H, 3R, 2ER, 1BB, 2K
• Roman 4IP, 0H, 0R, 1BB, 3K
• Acevedo 1-3, SF, RBI
• Roman 4IP, 0H, 0R, BB, 3K
The DSL Phillies Red got to Leuris Portorreal on their second turn in the lineup, getting two in the 3rd to break a 1-1 tie and cruised to a 5-1 win ovef the DSL Nationals. Portorreal gave up three runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk while striking out two to lose for the second time. Angel Roman tossed four scoreless to keep the game close. Like an ugly stripper, the D-Nats offense came away with just four singles and barely avoided the shutout. The lone run came with the help of a throwing error and came in on a sacrifice fly two batters later.
Henry struggled with command again, fell behind more than he’d like.
I’ll be interested in Parker’s start tonight, two outings out of the bullpen did not go well. I don’t expect much length unless he finds some much needed command. not a small ask for him.
Hassell hitting in the lower half of the Sens lineup is discouraging.
Hassells wrist within his rehab with hitting now mental
Fred
Parker penning a QS
Maybe Hassell in the off season could benefit from one on one with Brian Daubach !?
*sigh* now we’re signing cast offs not good enough to pitch for the worst pitching staff in recent history (the A’s pitching staff has an ERA of 6.08 and a collective WAR of -1.3), with Garcia doing his part with an 8.31 ERA.
The sooner we can trade away some big leaguers for some prospects the better. I’m tired of these MILFAs costing us games (see the losing pitchers for both Harrisburg and Rochester yesterday).
On the brightside, Alvarez threw yet another gem in A+. Can’t he take Javier, Ruotolo or Beck’s spot on the roster?
Apologies for not being in the know. but where has Green been?
I haven’t seen anything official, but I strongly suspect they’ve got him in a hitting boot camp, completely re-tooling his swing.
There was a note from one of the Post reporters that Green was in WPB working on his swing. Will’s hunch is correct.
Not in the lineup. He hasn’t been officially put on any list – Inactive or Development – which has led to some conspiracy theories among those who seem to forget the Nats make the Pats look like TMZ.
I wonder if we all got it wrong about who was the exciting HS bat from the 2022 draft. Most understandably pinned it in Green, but Brenner Cox got a lot of hype. Both have been big messes, while Nathaniel Ochoa Leyva snuck under the radar and has looked by far the most polished of the 3.
I wonder how the new bat infusion will play out. NOL is a shortstop, as is our 5th (Brown) and 10th (Glasser) rounders. NOL has been splitting time with Winder Diaz at short in FCL, (who himself has been playing well) while Armando Cruz has gotten the lions share of starts at short in Fburg, with Cortland Lawson getting the remainder.
Not sure how Brown and Glasser will be able to find any time once they sign…
Bleacher Report just released their updated farm ratings and Nats system is rated #6. This even after they downgraded Green and Hassell from Tier 1 to Tier 2 players.
In his first full year as a pro, Lipscomb has already made AA and is hitting an above-average .317/.349/.481 there. The gurus seem to doubt that he has much ceiling, but his floor is looking quite high. Since he didn’t really play until his senior year in college, though, they don’t have much real track record on which to judge. Figures crossed that he can be someone like Max Muncy, who really blossomed a little later.
You know who Lipscomb reminds me of? CJ Abrams. Check out their minor league stats. They’re remarkably similar.
But as we’ve seen with Abrams, if he’s not hitting for a decent average, he becomes hard to justify a starting spot. The lack of on base skills with relatively high strikeouts gets a lot more glaring.
I fear pitching will find his weakness and then use that to expose Lipscomb. And yet, Lipscomb just keeps hitting… still, there’s a huge jump to the majors from AA. But it sure is fun to watch one of our higher college bats draftees actually have some success! There’s been far too many before him, like Boissiere, Wiseman, Canning, Mendoza, Freeman, and countless others, just fizzle out before AA. Lipscomb, a year after being drafted, has already made it further than all these guys.
Literally hours after I praise him, Gerson Moreno gets tuned up with a blown save.
So maybe he’s not actually anything more than roster filler.
Also, quite disappointed at how poorly Tim Cate has done at AAA. Really expected more from an older player finally getting his shot at this level.
