The win went to Marquis Grissom Jr. who put on three baserunners in the 9th but let none in for his second “W.” Max Romero Jr. evened up the game with a three-run HR in the 4th while Cortland Lawson reached base four times on two singles and two walks to pace the Fredericksburg offense.

FCL Nationals, 11-14, 5th Place FCL East, 5GB
The FCL Nationals split the two games they played last week, which was shortened by the All-Star Break. This week, it’s another light week as they’re off today and Saturday but actually have to leave West Palm Beach twice.

DSL Nationals, 4-24, 9th Place DSL South, 18GB
Thanks to the makeup game on Wednesday—the usual day off for the D-Nats—it’s six games in six days this week with only two road games (Tuesday and Saturday).

A lot to like from yesterday with the exception of Rochester. When you look at the Rochester s.p. they have multiple pitchers who are old AND bad.

Love the outing from Parker, I always find him intriguing. Three baserunners in 7 innings is terrific.

Parker had a good curve ball yesterday, getting strike one with it as well as throwing it to one batter on 3-0 (swing and a miss). if he could get a little more action on his change up his prospects would increase.

We will know the wheels have gone off the bus in ROCH if Nats sign the Munoz twin .

Tyler Danish opted out of his contact, with Banda’s continued mediocrity (as well as others) could Troop or Schaller get the bump up?

Of all the pitching draftees I’m looking forward to see what Sampson and Dawg Liam bring to the table ..

Parker was impressive yesterday. After walking the first batter on four pitches, he didn’t give up a hit until the fifth. Lots of swings and misses by Richmond.

Luke a good Monday morning write up especially when you go over three QS from three affiliates . We will give Lara a QS with it being Aberdeen .
Next year could be the year some of these arms and bats turn the light switch on .
FredMD nice review of Parker .

I haven’t looked at JDLR’s numbers in a while, so in honor of his 4th homer — and 106th K!!! — I will do so. That’s the first thing you see, a horrid 36.3 K %. Yikes. Slash is .252/.332/.360, with 4 homers and 14 doubles in 71 games. He’s exclusively a corner OF, and he hasn’t remotely shown the power to make it as a corner OF. I still shake my head that they added him to the 40-man. He’s only 21 and still has time to find some power, but with the OF star power that has been added to the farm, he seems to be trending as a potential Andrew Stevenson type at best. Except he can’t be on the AAA shuttle because they’re burning all of his options before he gets close to AAA.

Great to see such good starts from Parker and Lara. If Parker can consistently throw strikes, he has the funk to be able to hang around the majors for a long time, even without high velo, as funky lefties last forever.

I wish JDLR could show Stevensons upside. For as mediocre as Stevenson was, he hit .304./359/.418 in A+, compared to JDLR’s line of .234/.314/.332…

Speaking of Stevenson, he’s currently demolishing pitching in St Paul, hitting .316/.392/.504. I hope he’ll get another shot in the big leagues.

Is it just me or is this an off day
    Topic ?
Does anyone else have an opinion about the five day carnival schedule each week in a different town for clubs ? Does this really prepare prospects for the true rigors of MLB schedules , reschedules travel demands coast to coast ??

I’m not sure there was ever a functional equivalent to rising the busses in the minors to taking flights in MLB.

I am fairly sure that the decision to go to six-game series might have been made without the pandemic. The entire thing has been about taking control and limiting costs.

Even if the union manages to win requirements for higher quality busses, MLB will probably still come out ahead with fewer trips.

Developmentally, I question the efficacy of it taking much much longer for a player or pitcher to see the whole league. How many times did we see a guy tear it up for 4-5 weeks only to come crashing back to earth by Memorial Day?

And by scheduling with cost ahead of competition, invariably there will be situations where a mediocre pitcher will get to face weak offenses for several starts, thus making him look better than he truly is (this is probably more applicable to other organizations, since the Nats are usually among those weak offenses).

Yolanda Morales just signed for $2.6 million, according Kiley McDaniel of ESPN. The Nats took him with the 40th pick and McDaniel had him as the 18th best prospect. Win Win!

    1. KW says:
      July 17, 2023 at 12:54 pm

So they gave Morales the value of pick #32, over slot by $455,300. Crews and Sykora will both want at least that much over slot, probably more. They saved roughly a million over slot on picks from rounds 6-10 and figure to save quite a lot ($400K+ on the 5th rounder).

      July 17, 2023 at 1:40 pm

How much did they pay Antuna btw?

  9. Mark L says:
    July 17, 2023 at 12:47 pm

Travis Sykora just signed, also for $2.6 million.

    1. Jeffrey Familia familiar says:
      July 17, 2023 at 1:42 pm

      Sweet sweet sweet !

  10. Pilchard says:
    July 17, 2023 at 12:52 pm

Morales signed for his slot value. Sykora signed for $1.6 million over slot value. Appears that used up all of the bonus pool money saved on picks 6 through 10.

  11. Pilchard says:
    July 17, 2023 at 12:54 pm

According to the MLB 2023 Draft Tracker, the Nats also signed their 13th round pick, UGA LHP Liam Wilson for $150K.

  12. LongTimeFirstTime says:
    July 17, 2023 at 2:49 pm

By my rudimentary math, the Nats signed 4 and 6-10 for a combined $1,273.5 million under slot and signed picks 2 and 3 for $2.06.6 million over slot so they are currently 793.1 over.

Looks like they’re gonna have to pay a tax. (But the Lerners are cheap!) The most they can save with the 5th round pick is 444.4K, which still leaves them about 350 over slot before they have to sign Crews.

They CAN go over by up to 5 percent and not have to forfeit a pick next year. 5 percent of their pool is 725,120K, meaning they can go about 375 K over slot to sign Crews.

  13. Jeffrey Familia familiar says:
    July 17, 2023 at 3:13 pm

Nats won’t look like Reds 2023 for 3-4 more years .

  14. Jeffrey Familia familiar says:
    July 17, 2023 at 11:33 pm

    Liam Sullivan joins
Bennett Alvarez and Suarez in that lefty
    Escalator up the chain
Sampson might be more swing or long relief material ?
Wow the Dl list is crowded on the farm pitchers list . 60 day to full season .
