Monday’s News & Notes

April 10, 2023
Team Yesterday Today Pitching Matchup
Rochester Lost, 9-1 OFF DAY N/A
Harrisburg OFF DAY OFF DAY N/A
Wilmington OFF DAY OFF DAY N/A
Fredericksburg Won, 3-2 (10 inn.) OFF DAY N/A

Syracuse 9 Rochester 1
• Kilome (L, 0-1) 1⅓ IP, 5H, 6R, 5ER, 3BB, 1K, 2WP
• Moreno 1⅓ IP, 0H, 1R, 1ER, 3BB, 2K, 2-1 IR-S
• Machado 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K, 1-0 IR-S
• Pinder 1-3, BB, RBI
• Plawecki 1-4

The Mets completed their paternity test (“Who’s your Daddy?”) of the Red Wings with a 9-1 smackdown in the series finale for their fifth win in six games. Starting and losing pitcher Franklyn Kilome took the brunt of the beating, with six runs allowed on five hits and three walks over an inning and a 1/3rd. Despite the doubleheader yesterday, Rochester used seven relievers. Chad Pinder broke up the shutout with a two-out RBI single in the 9th, which was just the third hit on the afternoon for Rochester. Roster moves: C Ivan Murzi reinstated from the Development List, reassigned to XST.

Harrisburg – OFF DAY
Harrisburg will begin its first homestand tomorrow against Richmond. LHP Alex Troop is expected to start on Tuesday; RHP Michael Cuevas is tabbed for Wednesday; RHP Jackson Rutledge will make his second start on Thursday.

Wilmington – OFF DAY
The Blue Rocks will host the Crawdads from Tuesday to Sunday with the rubber-armed TBD starting Tuesday and Wednesday before (presumably) giving way to Andry Lara on Thursday, followed by Dustin Saenz (possibly) and/or Chance Huff (possibly) on Friday and/or Saturday. ESPN has learned that TBD may also pitch on Sunday.

Fredericksburg 3 Lynchburg 2 (10 inn.)
• Atencio 4IP, 3H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Ciuffetelli (BS, 1) 1IP, 2H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 0K
• Caceres (W, 1-0) 1IP, 0H, 1R, 0ER, 0BB, 0K
• Lile 2-4, R, BB, RBI, SB
• Green 2-4, BB, RBI, CS

Fredericksburg got a run in the 1st and for eight innings, that looked like it might be enough. But a one-out double followed by a single tied it up in the top of the 9th for Lynchburg to send it to extras. The Hillcats plated the ghost runner on a sac fly in the 10th while the FredNats got back-to-back two-out singles by Daylen Lile and Elijah Green to tie and win the game respectively. Jose Atencio got the start and tossed four scoreless innings with three hits and no walks allowed while fanning two. Christian Ciuffetelli was charged with the blown save in the 9th while Bryan Caceres got the win as the pitcher of record after letting in the go-ahead run on two flyballs to right and a grounder to first base.

I’m somewhat excited about a few of the young Dominican pitchers. Susana, Aldonis, Atencio, Abreu, Ramirez, Lara to name a few.

Also Agostini, Jose Cedeno, and Adrian Ogando.

Confession: Green is off to the kind of start that we’d hope for from an elite-level prospect, but Nat fans have been burned sooooo many times with prospects over the last decade that it’s hard to get overly exuberant anymore. At the same time, there’s no rush. The big club is a long way from being competitive, and will be that way until more of the pitching develops.

Speaking of pitching, the Nats definitely need relievers, but Ferrer doesn’t look close to being ready. He only had a cup of coffee at AA last year, and AAA is a big jump.

Can someone explain to me how, again, we don’t have Wilmington home games on MILB.TV?

This is so ridiculous. Why isn’t the f.o. forcing the issue.

Last I heard, the Blue Rocks were using college interns for the radio and the next set of game notes I get from them will be the first. Thus I refuse to believe it would be anything but a GoPro camera mounted as high as the tallest employee can reach.

And a wood block and a hammer like in Bull Durham to simulate the sound of baseball hitting bat
        Lol

Is Hassell hurt? I don’t see his name in any of the box scores.

A month ago, there were reports that Hassell was shut down due to a wrist issue unrelated to his hamate issue in 2022. He has yet to reemerge from witness protection. He isn’t listed on the Harrisburg roster.

Didn’t Cliff Floyd years ago in 1995 (?) have similar injury ?
        Wrist bone

MASN guy (not Zuck) had a report last week saying Hassell was c2 weeks behind everyone else due to his wrist. No biggie.
