Back-to-back homers in the top of the 8th turned a 6-5 lead into the eventual 8-6 loss for the Red Wings. Joan Adon got the start and gave up four runs on four hits (one HR) and a walk. He struck out a season-high of eight. Connor Sadzeck took the loss, plus a blown save, giving up the aforementioned HRs in the 8th while retiring just one of five batters faced. Jecksson Flores came off the bench and hit a three-run HR to highlight Rochester’s four-run 6th that erased a 4-2 deficit. Lucius Fox led the Red Wings’ hit column with three singles while Jake Alu added two more safeties to his 14-game hit streak (25 hits, 45 total bases since Sept. 11) plus an RBI.
We’re nearing the end of the second September since the MLB’s takeover of MiLB, which gives us an unnecessarily long time to prospect-watch a level with few (if any) prospects. For those wondering, this will not change in 2023. The “A” teams will finish on September 10th while AA goes until the 17th and AAA ends on the 24th while starting on March 31st (pro tip to the Red Wings promo folks: A winter hat giveaway on Opening Day).
The Arizona Fall League starts on Tuesday, and as usual, MLB intends to apply its new 2023 rules to the league as a trial run. These rules are old hat to us, but I suspect we may see some articles from the beat writers and casual fans who are just discovering them. [Ed. note: Insert “Light Dawns on Marblehead” here]
For those wondering, Lee has been in touch with me and hopes to be able to provide photographs for one more season. If/when I hear otherwise (or get confirmation), I’ll pass that along.
Please, Mr. Rizzo, bring up Alu for a quick look-see. We don’t have to see any more of Hernandez or Vargas.
So Fonzy didn’t get released @ Wilmington ?
when Adon has his mechanics in sync with good command he can be lights out. unfortunately yesterdays game was another in a series when he loses it for a stretch. while the walks were down, misses in the middle of the plate can be just as damaging.
I suspect he’ll be the starter on Winter Hat Day and will get the ball every fifth day for as long as they think he’ll find the consistency to be a starter.
Adon has been jerked around more than most arms in the system .
One bad outing kept him from dipping believ4 ERA
Still a viable kid especially with the ???? On Oh Henry !
The refinement of the Nats’ young arms will be one of the major keys to if and when they can turn things around. Gore, Gray, and Cavalli are supposed to be top talents, and Adon has similar level stuff. Henry was a significant loss. I’m sure they hope that Bennett will progress rapidly. I would think that at least three of the four among Gray, Gore, Cavalli, and Adon will be in the MLB rotation in 2023, maybe all four. It doesn’t seem clear that Jim Hickey is the best person to be developing them, though.
The Braves threw Smoltz, Glavine, and Avery into the deep end in 1990 and went 65-97. Avery gave up 11 hits per nine innings and went 3-11. Glavine gave up 9.7 hits per nine and only struck out 5.4 per nine. It’s probably going to be that kind of year for the 2023 Nats’ rotation. (And no, I’m not predicting a 2024 World Series appearance! Or two first-ballot Hall of Famers . . .)
Then who replaces Hickey ??
Outside the org ??
Hanrahan ? Michael C?
if Davey is still in charge I wouldn’t expect many changes on his staff. but sooner or later they will expect results from them.
the Wings final game was washed out, from their site Stevenson was named MVP and voted most popular player by the fans. also this:
Adrian Sanchez was named the Most Civic Minded Player for his efforts in the Rochester Community, visiting youth baseball leagues, summer camps, and participating in numerous reading engagements.
good for him!!! I would love to see him in DC one day.
Fred MD
Sanchez will have a colorful player development post playing days career . Instructor and coach .
Put the fork in Red Wings season
Wet grounds or rain or just one bad inning
Perhaps, this was reported earlier, but because of the hurricane, the Nats shutdown their Instructional League on Monday.
