Thursday’s News & Notes

April 7, 2022
Team Yesterday Today Pitching Matchup (’21 Stats at the Level)
Rochester Won, 6-3 @ Toledo, 6:35 p.m. Cavalli (1-5, 7.30) vs. Pineda (0-1, 9.00)

Rochester 6 Toledo 3
• Aa. Sanchez 4IP, 5H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 4K, 2HR
• Fry (W, 1-0) 1IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 3K
• Barrera 3-3, 3R, BB
• Casey 2-4, 3B, HR, 4RBI
• Stevenson 2-5, 2R, HR, 2RBI, 3K

Despite the chill (50°F), six of the nine runs scored came via the longball as Rochester downed Toledo, 6-3. Red Wings starter Aaron Sanchez gave up two HRs in four innings pitched and five hits total while walking two and striking out four. The win went to Jace Fry with a scoreless 5th, two hits allowed, and three strikeouts. Donovan Casey struck out but once and drove in four as he tripled in Tres Barrera, who reached base four times with a walk, two singles, and a double, and broke open a 3-2 game with an Earl Weaver special in the 7th. Andrew Stevenson erased an early 1-0 deficit with a two-run HR in the 3rd. Roster moves: RHP Reed Garrett placed on 3-Day T.I.L.; RHP Curtis Taylor placed on 7-Day I.L.; C Welington Castillo placed on Restricted List.

For those of you who obsessing over the one roster we have thus far, we still don’t have it officially winnowed down to “The 28.” But the latest roster may have some hints as, with the exception of Barrera, 27 of those listed do have an assigned number. So just a few more hours, presumably, until we get more clarity as the “Big Nats” are set to lose start the first of 162 tonight against the Mets.

Interesting that the Swinging Sens have the two chips from the Gio trade hitting 8 th and 9 th.

Castillo retired in July of 2021.

why is he still on the Rochester MILB.com roster? so weird.

      My exact thoughts, a head-scratcher.

I remember they did the same with Will Piwnica-Worms after he retired midseason. With a “young” guy like that, it makes sense from the Nats’ point of view — don’t want him to retire in order to get out of the organization, but with a veteran player it just seems petty. But then again pettiness is far more common than fairness…

Luke that’s a name out of the past especially in rainy April : Worms
Those parked on overflow parking ( XST) have their engines in neutral awaiting future decisions in days ..

        Tracking the two OU Sooners
        Cavilli Rochester
        Jake Irwin XST?

  3. Mark L says:
    April 7, 2022 at 8:56 am

The Rochester roster is very important this year as the big club has players who’ll be released sooner rather than later.

MLB trade rumors and others reporting the Klobosits has been DFAed. So the Nats have a spot open on the 40. It appears they want to add 3 players to the 40
(Arano, Franco, Strange-Gordon). That could be accomplished by transferring Will Harris and Steven Strasburg to the 60-day DL. Otherwise move(s) will be needed.

    1. Will says:
      April 7, 2022 at 9:52 am

That’s…. insane. Need I remind Nats brass that Klobosits posted a 2.35 ERA across AA and AAA last year at age 26?

And we’re making space for who exactly?

This team has absolutely abysmal depth and we’re risking all of it to clear space for players are BOTH worse AND older than those we’re DFAing.

      Stevenson -> Strange-Gordon
      Klobosits -> Cishek/Doolittle/Clippard/Perez/etc.

I knew this rebuild was going to be longer and harsher than most expect, but I didn’t realize part of the process would entail waiving fringe prospects while going all in on old MLB failures.

      1. Alou2alu says:
        April 7, 2022 at 10:46 am

Let’s see if Gabe brings a return in a claim / trade scenario but still very bizarre even beyond BOSSman s DFA predictions

    2. Luke Erickson says:
      April 7, 2022 at 11:08 am

So far, it’s Seth Romero and Will Harris onto the 60-day and Adriazana to the MLB 10-Day I.L. I think it might be safe to bet on Fox getting the call instead of Garcia.

    3. Mark L says:
      April 7, 2022 at 11:48 am

Klobosits only had 2 appearances this spring, so he’s hurt somehow. The Nats aren’t saying.

      1. LM says:
        April 7, 2022 at 12:25 pm

When we were at spring training, the experienced pitchers were taking alot of the innings from the others. He may or may not be hurt.

  5. John B says:
    April 7, 2022 at 11:20 am

I know we do not normally talk draft on here, but BA put a cutup of Dylan Lesko’s pitches from last night. He went 4 innings.

His changeup is ridiculous. It is the 2nd best I have seen from an amatuer (Strasburg is 1).

His FB hit 97. Location was decent, but not the command I had read about.

Curve is the third pitch. He got a feel for it and threw some good ones late.

I am not as blown away by him as most, but he has some upside. I would prefer Elijah Green or Termarr Johnson falling to 5.

Kevin Parada might end up being the best choice at 5. He is absolutely raking. I wonder if the Nats would take him and move him off catcher.

  6. natteringnabob says:
    April 7, 2022 at 1:13 pm

I think more draft talk would be good here, although I think the focus today is going to be on the rosters.

    FredNats roster is up.

  7. Alou2alu says:
    April 7, 2022 at 2:00 pm

No House in FRED no White
Basically a repeat roster from last late summer then ..

    1. John B says:
      April 7, 2022 at 2:28 pm

Alou, they announced the roster on Twitter. The teamsite roster is still last year’s.

Cole Henry is the 3rd starter for Harrisburg. Gauch(game 2) and Evan Lee(Game 5) are starting as well.

      1. Alou2alu says:
        April 7, 2022 at 2:56 pm

So Gausch opened eyes in spring into a starters role not a back end bullpen role
Oh Henry the new revised candy bar ..

  8. KW says:
    April 7, 2022 at 2:37 pm

Lara and Saenz in the FBurg rotation. Is Denaburg at Wilmington, or still in FLA? House, Infante, and Boissiere make the full-season roster, but not Frizzell. White makes it in the OF, but not higher-drafted Lile or much-hyped Quintana. De La Rosa repeating FBurg, which seems like a good idea.

    1. John B says:
      April 7, 2022 at 3:10 pm

Lile had Tommy John surgey and is rehabbing in Fla.

Denaburg and Aldo Ramirez could both be starting in Fla since they had so few innings. Wilmington is possible for Ramirez.

Quintana has barely played, so extended makes sense for him.

Frizzell may got to Fburg if/when Boisierre gets promoted.

      1. KW says:
        April 7, 2022 at 4:53 pm

Hadn’t seen that about Lile. That’s a setback, but at least he’s young. Yes, Quintana barely played in 2021. On the plus side, it’s good to see that the organization is so positively impressed by White.

  9. Mick Reinhard says:
    April 7, 2022 at 3:07 pm

    Sens rotation—>
    Friday: Ronald Herrera
    Saturday: Richard Guasch
    Sunday: Cole Henry
    Tuesday: Steven Fuentes
    Wednesday: Evan Lee

    1. Alou2alu says:
      April 7, 2022 at 3:18 pm

      Very cool
      Notice no Tim Cate

    2. Mark L says:
      April 7, 2022 at 3:24 pm

Thanks Mick. Excited to get to Harrisburg this year. One of the 10 best stadiums in MILB.

    3. KW says:
      April 7, 2022 at 4:56 pm

For an organization that really needs to develop some relievers — and quickly — why in the heck aren’t Fuentes and Evan Lee relieving? The Nats’ insistence that everyone is a starter until he’s out of options is maddening.

  10. natteringnabob says:
    April 7, 2022 at 8:26 pm

In reference to my earlier post about Fred Nats roster being up – you will only see it by clicking on the link “FredNats Announce 2022 Opening Roster”. If you search for the roster the usual way (through the “team” menu) you will see a roster they have had on the site for some time. The actual roster has Brady House on it.

    1. Alou2alu says:
      April 7, 2022 at 11:24 pm

Wow Rochester rallied like they were hitting in Fresno climate
      No reeling behind Teel

      Thanks natter— Bob
BOSSman might have Wilmington about right on board
Some teams jettisoning old number ones : Zimmer to jays hmmmm
