Saturday’s News & Notes

April 30, 2022
Team Yesterday Today Pitching Probables
Rochester Lost, 6-4 vs. Syracuse, 1:05 p.m. Cavalli (0-2, 9.00) and Verrett (0-1, 9.00) vs.
F. Peña (0-2, 14.40) and Zastryzny (0-1, 2.45)
Harrisburg Won, 8-6 vs. Hartford, 6 p.m. Fuentes (1-1, 4.80) vs. Kauffmann (1-1, 5.17)
Wilmington Lost, 9-2 @ Hudson Valley, 6:05 p.m. Shuman (1-0, 2.84) vs. Castano (0-2, 6.00)
Fredericksburg Lost, 6-5 vs. Charleston, 6:05 p.m. Saenz (1-0, 4.60) vs. Goss (0-0, 1.50)

Syracuse 6 Rochester 4
• Tetreault (L, 0-2) 5⅓ IP, 6H, 4R, 4ER, BB, 5K, 2HR
• Edwards 1IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Noll 2-4, SB
• Stevenson 1-3, R, BB, HR, RBI
• 1-9 RISP; 7 LOB

The Red Wings briefly led this one 2-1 but were buried by a three-run 6th and a two-run 7th to lose, 6-4. Jackson Tetreault lost for the second time while allowing four runs on six hits (two HR) and a walk over five and a 1/3rd innings. He struck out five. Jake Noll led the Rochester hit column with two singles while Andrew Stevenson’s second HR in the 9th made this a little bit closer than it really was.

Harrisburg 8 Hartford 6
• Henry 4IP, 0H, 0R, 2BB, 4K, HBP
• Schaller (W, 1-0) 1IP, 1H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 0K, HR
• Brill (SV, 7) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 1BB, 0K
• W. Garcia 2-3, 2R, HR, 3RBI
• Harrison 1-4, R, HR, 3RBI
• Flores 1-2, 2B

Harrisburg nearly blew a 7-0 lead but again outslugged Hartford, 8-6 to even the series at 2-2. Cole Henry stretched out to four scoreless innings, issuing two walks and a Victor Robles while fanning four. Reid Schaller was the pitcher of record to get the “W,” though he was dinged for a solo shot in his sole inning of work. The Senators saw four of their eight hits go for extra bases, including homers by Wilson Garcia and K.J. Harrison and doubles by Jecksson Flores and Justin Connell.

Hudson Valley 9 Wilmington 2
• Cate (L, 1-1) 2⅔ IP, 3H, 4R, 4ER, 3BB, 5K
• Willingham 2IP, 0H, 0R, BB, 4K
• Méndez 1-3, BB, 2B, 2RBI
• Baker, 1-3, BB, SB

The Renegades had it made against the Blue Rocks pitchers, retrieving a bounty of nine runs and ten hits in a 9-2 win. Tim Cate was knocked from the box in the 3rd, charged with four runs on three hits and three walks. He fanned five in his first loss of ’22. Ricardo Méndez drove in both Wilmington runs, including an RBI double in the 9th, while he, Omar Meregildo, and Darren Baker each reached base twice with a walk and a hit.

Charleston 6 Fredericksburg 5
• Collins 5IP, 4H, R, ER, 0BB, 9K, 2E
• Seijas (BS, 1) 3IP, 3H, 4R, 4ER, 2BB, 2K, 2HR
• Ribalta (L, 0-1) 1IP, 0H, 1R, 0ER, 0BB, 3K, HBP
• Infante 2-4, 2R, HR, 2RBI
• V. Peña 2-4, SB
• House, 0-5, 5K, E(7)

Brady House’s season-opening, 18-game on-base streak ended spectacularly as the phenom struck out five times in five AB’s, with the last K coming in the 9th to end the game with the tying run on second base. I guess we’ll just have to settle for an 18-y.o. who’s only batting 194 points better (.885 OPS vs. .691) than the rest of the Carolina League. Of course, House had “help” in Fredericksburg’s 6-5 loss, as Karlo Seijas coughed up four runs in three innings for the blown save, turning another good start by Brendan Collins (5IP, 1R, 9K) into a no-decision. Sammy Infante went deep again for his league-leading 7th HR while going 2-for-4, a mark matched by Viandel Peña while swiping his sixth base.

Henry looked good again in HBG. On his HBP, the batter didn’t even try to move and let it hit him in elbow guard. Hartford’s homer came on a deep fly to CF that Martin never saw due to the twilight and the batter circled the bases. I lost it too from my seat.

For the first time, Cole Henry was stretched out to 4 innings. Still with a 0.00 ERA.

Lucas Knowles continues to pitch well at Wilmington, his ERA sits at 2.08.

Brendan Collins was a 17th round pick last year, he now has an ERA of 3.55.

Rumor has it that Elon Musk may eventually buy the Wash Post . Maybe he could just expand his 300 billion resources and buy the Nats and Generals ..

5 1/3 of no hit ball. Only 1 K and 3 BB and HBP. Only 41 of 81 pitches were strikes. Lots of work to do. He has a ton of talent, but until he learns to command that FB, he will not come close to his ceiling.
