Lehigh Valley broke open a 1-1 game with two in the top of the 8th. Rochester could only get one run back in the bottom of the 8th and went in order in the last of the 9th for a 3-2 loss. Free-agent pickup Matt Tomshaw turned in a quality start with six innings of one-run ball on a solo HR and five hits total. The loss went to Nick Wells, who issued a leadoff walk to start the 8th, got his one and only out on a sacrifice, then gave up a triple and a single. Aaron Barrett finished the 8th with a double play and retired the side in order in the 9th. Jecksson Flores singled once, doubled twice, and scored the final Red Wings run in the 8th. Jake Noll’s 10th longball accounted for the only run as Rochester was an abysmal 1-for-11 with RISP and left on 12 baserunners.

Cavalli walked just one and allowed just two hits over six and 2/3rds innings. Ryan Tapani lost the shutout with a two-run HR in the 8th while Reid Schaller worked around a single in the 9th. K.J. Harrison smacked a pair of two-run homers while Rhett Wiseman doubled twice to lead Harrisburg’s 11-hit parade. Wilmington was on the other side of a five-run rally in the 9th as they roared back from 4-1 down to take a 6-4 lead and held on for a 6-5 win. Joan Adon went the first five innings and gave up four runs on four hits (one HR) and a walk while hitting two batters. He struck out four in his seventh no-decision. Soap opera villain Jordan Bocko tossed two scoreless as the first man out of the ‘pen and Davis Moore added a third zero before giving up a run in the 9th but picked up the “W.” Justin Connell’s third HR highlighted the 9th-inning outburst and was 3-for-5 overall, with Yasel Antuna also going deep to pace the Blue Rocks offense. Roster moves: C Drew Millas, RHP Richard Guasch acquired from Oakland, assigned from Washington.

• Vega 1-3, R, BB, RBI
No such luck for the F-Nats as three in the 9th was four runs short for a 7-3 loss to the Shorebirds. Opening Day starter Karlo Seijas made his minors-leading 16th start and let in four runs on six hits and a walk over five innings. It was his 9th loss, tying him with former teammate Mitchell Parker. Bryan Peña dug the hole three runs deeper in two innings before Tomás Alastre put up two goose eggs to finish the game. Junior Martina singled twice and scored in the 9th on an Onix Vega RBI single, which was the one (1) hit in eight RISP chances for Fredericksburg. Roster moves: SS Jordy Barley acquired from San Diego, assigned from Washington.

The FCL Nats ended a four-game slide by filleting the FCL Marlins, 12-1. After Dylan Beasley “worked on some stuff” in the 1st, Bryan Caceres came on to pitcher the next five innings, allowing the lone F-Marlins runs on a home run and two hits total. He walked three and struck out five. Andry Arias reached four times with a walk, two singles, and a double while Jackson Coutts doubled once and singled twice to lead the FCL Nats’ 11-hit, 12-walk, five-steal offense.

Cavalli apparently doesn’t want us to give up his ranking as the top prospect without a fight. I guess the question now becomes, with a “rebuilding” team, whether he’s progressing at a rate that can put him in the major-league rotation next year.
doesn’t want to give “up”
Hooray for Klobosits, 1093d overall pick, who made his MLB last night and got a shaky hold. What a great story.
Thanks Luke, for all your hard work!
I’ll second that hooray for Gabe Klobosits, who proved unhittable all year and finally gets his chance. The feelgood story of the year.
Also of note, Brady House signed for $5m. That forced the Nats to exceed their total slot allotment, meaning they’ll have to pay a 50% fine for each dollar they went over (about $450k). They won’t lose a draft pick though.
However, this surely closes the door on them signing Anglin. Still not sure why Marc Davis hasn’t signed… but I guess he wants to go back to JuCo. Seems like Kligman couldn’t be convinced to sign either.
The Nats accomplished their priority — signing the top 10 picks — including a generational talent who cost a little over slot. (I’m actually a little surprised that House signed for $5M, considering that he had been projected higher in the draft.) The Nats didn’t get a lot of slot savings on their top 10, not leaving them enough for the flyers they took in the second 10. That’s fine. They got their guys.
Beyond House, I’m most intrigued by White and Frizzell, all of whom have the big-time power that has been sorely lacking from the organization, save for the brief appearance of the comet Soto.
lets hope that White ends up being Devon White with power or a poor mans Chili Davis. not George Wright.
SS an interesting island for somebody inhabit the next few years. maybe several guys….
will Thompson be utilized as a swing guy, pure bullpen or depth starter.
suddenly Espino is a valuable asset on rotation. How things change as Dwight Yokum once sang..
father time with baseball teaches us that the art of the trade more often then not is the balancing of the other team taking on payroll in combination with propsects.
one would thinl Max and Trea would bring back more than four propsects.
Gomes and Harrison brought back three when Rizzo gave up three to the ,,,call security..the Guardians…CLE club. that club should have gone with Barons..
Kyle only brought an A level arm.
Baldanado should get a look when rosters expand.
