Wednesday’s News & Notes

May 19, 2021
Team Yesterday Today Probable Pitchers
Rochester Lost, 11-6 vs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, 1:05 p.m. Armenteros (0-1, 10.13) vs. Green (0-0, 4.50)
Harrisburg Lost, 2-1 vs. Altoona, 12:00 p.m. Sharp (0-2, 4.15) vs. MacGregor (0-1, 6.35)
Wilmington Lost, 5-3 @ Aberdeen, 7:05 p.m. Henry (1-1, 3.27) vs. Rom (1-0, 2.00)
Fredericksburg Lost, 14-3 vs. Salem, 7:05 p.m. Parker (0-1, 5.87) vs. Blalock (0-0, 1.50)

RailRiders 11 Red Wings 6
• Braymer (L, 0-2) 3⅔ IP, 7H, 7R, 7ER, 2BB, 3K, 2HR
• McFarland 2IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 3K, HBP
• Tomás 2-5, 2R, 2B, HR, 3RBI
• Kieboom 1-2, R, HR, RBI

The RailRiders broke open a 2-1 game with a five-run 4th as they derailed the Red Wings’ home opener, 11-6. Ben Braymer lost for the second time in as many starts, charged with the first seven Scranton/Wilkes-Barre runs on seven hits (two HR) and two walks over three and 2/3rds. He struck out three. Yasmany Tomás doubled, homered, and drove in three to lead the Rochester offense. Carter Kieboom also homered in two at-bats but was lifted for no obvious reason in the bottom of the 5th. Given that manager Matt LeCroy sent up a LHB to face a LHP with the bases loaded instead of Kieboom, or that there did not appear to be an injury at the big club last night in Chicago, the move may have been predetermined (i.e. made without regard to game situation).
Roster moves: RHP Sean Nolin placed on the 7-Day I.L.; RHP Paolo Espino optioned from Washington.

Altoona 2 Harrisburg 1
• Teel (L, 0-1) 6IP, 2H, R, ER, 0BB, 3K, HR
• German 1IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 0K
• Reetz 1-3, 2B, BB
• Banks 1-4, 2B, RBI

Harrisburg’s 9th inning rally fell one run short, 2-1, ending a three-game win streak. Carson Teel made one mistake—a two-out solo HR in the 6th—and was punished with his first loss despite going six strong innings. He walked none and struck out three. Jakson Reetz doubled with one out and Nick Banks sent him home with a two-out two-bagger but was stranded there as Humberto Arteaga flew out to end the game. The Sens managed just three singles and three walks prior to the 9th.

Aberdeen 5 Wilmington 3
• Cavalli (L, 0-1) 6IP, 10H, 4R, 4ER, 2BB, 12K
• Peterson ⅔ IP, 0H, 0R, 3BB, K
• Canning 2-3, R, 2B, BB, CS
• Pineda 1-4, R, HR, RBI

Cade Cavalli’s scoreless inning streak stopped in the first inning as he took his first professional loss as the Blue Rocks fell to the IronBirds, 5-3. The 22-y.o. racked another career-high of 12 whiffs, but gave up four runs on ten hits and two walks over six innings. Todd Peterson walked the bases loaded in the 7th but was bailed out by Francys Peguero, who then gave up the final run in the 8th. Gage Canning doubled, singled, and walked while Israel Pineda and Omar Meregildo both homered with no one on base to lead the Wilmington offense.

Salem 14 Fredericksburg 3
• P. González ⅔ IP, 4H, 6R, 4ER, 1BB, 0K, 0HR
• A. Hernández 2⅓ IP, 0H, 0R, 1BB, 1K
• Randa 2-3, 2B, BB, RBI
• Arruda 1-3, R, BB

Pedro González became the latest Fredericksburg starter to not make it out of the first as Salem extended the losing streak to 13 with a 14-3 smackdown. González retired just two of eight batters faced while giving up four hits and a walk. Alfonso Hernández turned in his first clean outing of the season with two and a 1/3rd scoreless innings, one walk, and one strikeout. The F-Nats were held to five hits and three walks, led by Joe Randa (2B, 1B, BB) and Jake Arruda (1B, BB).

Another day, another four crappy results.

Teel put in another very solid outing. He’s never been dominant (only 10 K in 17 IP), but he’s limiting batters getting on base (only 4 BB and 12 H for a 0.94 WHIP), which is good. But I’m maybe less convinced his game will translate at the big league level, than I am about Cade Cavalli. Cavalli had a very strange night. It’s not often you see a pitcher strike out double digits and allow double digit hits in the same game!! He wasn’t hit hard, either. Only 1 of the 10 hits were for extra bases (a 2B). It makes me wonder if part of it is due to poor defense.

Israel Pineda continues to be consistently inconsistent. 2 passed balls. 1 for 4 in stopping SB attempts. 3 Ks in 4 ABs. And yet, he still goes deep for the 4th time this season. His average is .130, but despite that his SLG is .391, the second highest rate in 4 MiLB seasons.

Meanwhile, the Latino infusion went quiet in Fredericksburg, with De la Rosa, Pena and Emiliani combining to go 1-11 with 6 Ks.

At the beginning of the season, I was convinced this Fredericksburg team would be in contention to be the worst in the minors. But now I’m realizing, worst team in the 21st century (or in the modern era?) might be more realistic.

Maybe it was on purpose? Do you really want to look at the boxscore/stats of this team??

Well, remove Cavalli from the pitching ZEROS. Only 4 left.

Carson ‘no respect’ Teel gives up 1 run, with zero walks, and still loses. Not much support.
