Nats Shut Out from BA Top 100
Baseball America released its 2021 Top 100 Prospects List this week and the number of Nationals named was… ZERO.
At first, I thought, “OK, so first time since this site started…”
Nope.
Even in the dark times of 2005-2009, there the likes of the Zimmerman(n)s (Ryan and Jordan) and Chris Marrero, not to mention—except I have to—Collin Balester, who came in by the skin on his teeth at #95 in 2007.
Of course, much of this is because both of last year’s Top 100 players, Carter Kieboom and Luis Garcia, graduated from prospect status last summer. And in the big picture, this is not really a huge surprise: The Nats have been drafting near the bottom of each round for quite some time and have been trading prospects for major-leaguers, not vice-versa.
For those looking for a silver lining, Washington’s No. 1 pick RHP Cade Cavalli is presumably number #101 if you believe that BA’s 10 Prospects Who Just Missed… is in the order of “others receiving votes” like an AP Coaches’ Poll.
Two other Nationals were named but not in the “101-110” – 2019 1st Rd. pick Jackson Rutledge and the first three-point-nine-million-dollar man, Yasel Antuna (2016 IFA).
We now return you to your Inauguration Day anxiety/midwinter malaise…
I think what this means is that BA doesn’t expect any of the Nats’ farmhands to play a significant role in 2021. Of course, that depends on the definition of farmhand. I expect Garcia to start in AAA but to join the team sometime during the season. Romero also is likely to open in AAA but may be called up to the bullpen if he is effective. The lower-ranked prospects may join the Nats sometime in 2022, unless here is a strike/lockout.
We won in 19
20/20 was a wash with the “ Lonely Guy/ Steve Martin stadium attendance mirage
2021 is the true rebuild after Harper leaving
Should be interesting once names like Antuna , Jeremy DeLaRosa , Martin Geraldo compete for big club time
Club trying to find arms to fill Jake Irwin IP: hence the signing of Jersey Boy off STL A plus
I’m surprised Rutledge didn’t make it in the 90s or so.
So much of this is a guessing game, with most scouts, especially those not employed by clubs, not having seen many or any prospects in 2020. And with so many prospects from 2020 graduating off the list, I’d have thought Rutledge, just due to those graduations, finding a way onto the list. Guess not.
I think the rankings are accurate, and an accurate reflection of the diminished state of the system. Of course over the last three years, the system has produced a true superstar (Soto), perhaps three other guys who maybe can play everyday (Robles, Kieboom, Garcia), three maybe-sorta MLB starters (Fedde, Voth, Crowe, not to mention Luzardo and Dunning), one solid reliever (Suero), and one trade-acquired reliever who got sorted out in the Nat minors (Rainey).
I sure hope Cavalli and Rutledge pan out, so I don’t mean this as a negative, but I’m surprised by the buzz for Cavalli, who has yet to pitch in a pro game and had pretty average stats in college. Rutledge was dominant in his pro half-season, so I’m also surprised that most boards have already moved Cavalli past Rutledge.
I sense the BA guys in particular really like Cavalli. If he makes 20 starts between High-A and AA this year and does something like 10-5 with a 3.00 era and 130 Ks in 110 innings he’s deep into the top100 this time next year.
I guess the Nats signed Duarte to give depth to AAA infield since 2020 was a lost season and we don’t know what is in the tank of many including Martin Gerardo
That’s an ambitious agenda for A) a shortened season, and B) a guy who was a two-way player into college and is still being refined as a pitcher. If he can do it, more power to him. But fellow Sooner Jake Irvin, with very similar college stats, spent all of his first pro season at the A level, not even making A+.
Hernan Perez also a new AAA depth signing. He has a fair amount of MLB experience, but his stats look a lot like Difo’s.
Drew Ward signs with Tigers. A final farewell and good luck to someone we’ve followed for a long time.
Agreed.
Ward in AL and Detroit is a good fit for a rebuilding club and player career
January mirage of Rochester lineup ?
Does Rizzo sign some minor league FAs in February ??
If DC is truly not US soil and eventually the acreage all gets bull dozed
Could the team move to Virginia ??
Rochester: I truly have lost track of what upper-level minor-leaguers are still with the organization. I’m pretty sure I remember that Brandon Snyder re-signed, and Mario Sanchez. Maybe Espino did as well?
Infield: are Difo and Adrian Sanchez still in the organization? Did they re-sign Jacob Wilson? They signed Hernan Perez, and I mentioned Snyder. I know Austin Davidson got cut; not sure about Ian Sagdal. Presumably, the plan is for Kieboom and Garcia to start the season in Rochester as well.
Outfield: Yadiel Hernandez and Nick Banks should be back, and Yasmany Tomas will be as well unless he makes the big club in the spring. I’m thinking Stevenson will stick in DC after a strong finish to 2020. Don’t know about others. Is Rhett Wiseman still with the organization? I anticipate they will sign a couple of OFs over the next month.
Catcher: Barrera and Read. I would guess that Welington Castillo will opt out if he doesn’t make the big club.
Difo signed with pirates and assigned to AAA. Adrian Sanchez AAA for Nats. Jacob Wilson signed with Oakland and assigned to AAA. Sagdal on nats AAA roster. Wiseman on nats AAA roster.
Scratch LA Stella off the FA list .
Other options for a minor contract offer and spring training invite ??
Realize that relievers are rarely considered prospects, but Matt Cronin dominated the SEC, and then was ridiculously good for the Nats in 2019:
17 G 22 IP 11 H 11 BB 41 Ks 17Ks per 9 innings 0.82 ERA
Heard he brought the same stuff to F’burg last Summer. Oh, he’s also left handed. Barring injury, Cronin will be pitching in the bigs this Summer.
Agree! There are no lefthanded relievers on the free agent side remaining. There is bound to be a lot of pitching injuries this year because of last year and Cronin will almost certainly get his chance.
He ran into almost no resistance in 2019 and I’m looking to see how he does in Rochester.
Great to see Cavalli on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100, albeit at #99. Rutledge probably not far behind him and both could be in the Top 100 by June or so.
When is the last time you have seen a Rizzo farm depth chart where the AAA cupboard has names on it like now
Usually it’s late February before the names are added on
There hasn’t been a transactions post on BA since Dec. 17 and just three since the World Series. Just. Like. Last. Year.
