Catching Up on Transactions; So Long Boys

March 23, 2019

Time for a little housekeeping, courtesy of a slew of moves made this afternoon by the big club:

WAIVED OUTRIGHT OPTIONED REASSIGNED
• C Pedro Severino • RHP Joe Ross (AAA) • RHP Henderson Alvarez
• RHP Erick Fedde (AA) • RHP Aaron Barrett
• C Spencer Kieboom (AA) • RHP Scott Copeland
• LHP Vidal Nuño
• IF Carter Kieboom

And one of the more depressing rites of spring…

RELEASED
• LHP Matt Crownover
• RHPs Sam Held, Phil Morse, Nector Ramirez
• IFs Jake Scudder, Ronaldy Sosa
• OFs Luis Aquino, Jonathan Quintana

RETIRED
• RHP Connor Zwetsch
• 2B Carson Shaddy

I don’t think are any real surprises here, and there still may be a few more before April 4, but this is where I remind folks that for most of these guys, this is the end of their professional careers. So thanks and best wishes towards the next chapter in the book, so to write.

Our suspicions regarding the assignment of some guys to AA for the sake of expediency (not only that, Skipper, they’ll be close to DC) may still be proven wrong, but this seems about right. Raudy Read will still probably be the DH playing catcher in Fresno. Fedde’s placement may very well be temporary, but let’s not forget that he hasn’t exactly dominated at AA, AAA, or MLB. It wouldn’t hurt to have a few starts to get back that confidence… or drop down to have some margin for error if he’s going back to relieving.

With roughly five days to go, there’s still an outside shot of Jake Noll beating out Adrian Sanchez for a bench spot, though I suspect that 40-man spot vacated by Severino will be saved for a possible waiver claim. Likewise, it would also seem that Austen Williams has a puncher’s chance of beating out Wander Suero for the last bullpen spot.

Ahhh, bummer. Matt Crownover has a story he’ll be telling forever with his no-hitter last season. And I wonder if Carson Shaddy ever really recovered, psychologically, from blowing that routine play as Arkansas lost to Oregon State.

Best of luck to Pedro Severino in Baltimore. Dude can’t hit, but neither can a lot of veteran backup catchers who have somehow been hanging around the major leagues for years. He could make a career for himself yet.

Shaddy also could be said was slightly ahead of a heap of infielders Potomac will get familiar with Sanchez , Daily ( ND Fans roar ) Marinconz , Vickers , Jesus Morales steeping @ GCL…
Crownover even without that perfect night would have exited for a career with his gentlemanly manners in baseball or some other vocation.
Bummer about Sosa. Some of us have a fondness for guys who hit lefthanded and carry two different gloves ( 3 for him ?)
Now the question with Shaddy bound for another org. : Luke . Is Pablo CRUISE OConner the first Auburn guy18 to hit Woodbridge 19?
So long boys sounds like Andy Devine or Chill Wills in a western
Off to church to pray for Wash Nats first place finish. Robles and Soto doing their own version of Dawson/ Raines . Max Cy Young , Strasbourg Symphony along the Anacastia all summer long and Corbin churning out 18-20 wins in 3 slot. Healthy legs on offense. Trea Turner All star and 70 SBs. 45 doubles. Adams hits 30 HR. Health to Zimm. May his doubles go to right center all summer ..

Time for the casual fan to oooh and ahhh over Israel Pineda with his catching skills and lumber

    2. Jeff says:
      March 24, 2019 at 9:09 am

Crownover was softly head of a dirge of lefties: Braymer, Raquel , Bourne , and eventually Cate and Fletcher . Whatever that means .
      For what it’s worth

Three words describe Fedde and S. Kieboom going to HBG vice Fresno…location, location, location. It will be very interesting to see where the remaining guys are placed.

Interesting that the Yankees are throwing the 2018 Rule 5 guy the Orioles tossed back at the Yanx , Cortes.
Knorr could use a lefty @ Fresno with all the spare parts getting stretched out under Holman’s watchful eyes

I’m so happy that Crownover had that no-hitter, now he can regale his grandchildren with tales of his exploits for years.

As I said before, I truly loved watching Severino play defense. Maybe this will work for him, be in a low pressure situation with a very bad team. Good luck to him.

We shouldn’t forget that Sandy Leon figured out how to hit after he left the Nationals. Like their inability to develop lefty relievers, their inability to teach glove-first catchers how to hit passably is baffling.

having one good year is not the same learning how to hit

My memory of Pedro Severino is him battling the cold April in Hagerstown with his South of the equator thin blood when most of us guys in the stands were dressed in layers drinking lame Stadium coffee

Somebody has to throw this thought out : F troop addition – Brian Goodwin ?? Lol!

    1. Jeff says:
      March 25, 2019 at 4:02 pm

Now that Shaddy is adios … who should we figure joins Andersons infield rotation ?? Maybe Vickers or Pogue because I doubt brass wants Franco to repeat Hags or Meregildo.
Right, Gil?? We’re awaiting your sage commentary

    2. Mark L says:
      March 25, 2019 at 5:20 pm

Now that old friend Goodwin is available, considering how thin the Nats are in the outfield, it would be a good idea to stash him in Fresno.

After we traded him, he was a respectable .725 OPS.

      1. Karl Kolchak says:
        March 25, 2019 at 11:20 pm

Not sure Goodwin would take a minor league deal–and I’ll bet another low budget team like the Marlins will snap him up first. It should be noted that he had an absolutely dreadful spring in KC.

        1. Jeff says:
          March 28, 2019 at 3:53 am

          Angels for Goodwin. Good match
Now that April Garden knome Noll is on ODR
Harrisburg sure looks to flesh out its roster with Meijia, Masters, Sagdal, Corredor , Wiseman , …

          1. Jeff says:
            March 28, 2019 at 3:57 am

Collier and Abreau ? Harrisburg repeat , Fresno or pink slip??

    3. Jeff says:
      March 26, 2019 at 6:56 pm

Arizona could use Goodwin now that Souza blew a knee. What a shame

  5. natteringnabob says:
    March 26, 2019 at 12:32 pm

So with Washington post reporting that Adrian Sanchez and Austen Williams have been optioned to AAA, we’ll see Jake Noll is on the opening day roster?

    1. Jeff says:
      March 26, 2019 at 1:26 pm

That would be cool but not as cool as Barrett facing the Yanx at home .
No wonder Noll won the Bob Boone award.

    2. Jeff says:
      March 26, 2019 at 3:50 pm

April Nats Garden Noll promotion ?? A Noll Noll

      1. Jeff says:
        March 26, 2019 at 4:25 pm

        Correction. A Noll knome

        1. Jeff says:
          March 26, 2019 at 5:24 pm

Now that Noll may not be on Sens infield rotation. Does this shoe horn David Masters into LuCroy plans ?? Norfolk ??

          1. SaoMagnifico says:
            March 26, 2019 at 10:56 pm

Pretty sure it’s up to Rizzo and Scialabba who LeCroy’s players are.

        2. Jeff says:
          March 27, 2019 at 2:46 pm

We could say that Noll has exceeded his protection beyond nice org bat which would hit A plus or AA ??

  6. KW says:
    March 27, 2019 at 8:45 am

Congrats to Noll for apparently making the team, unless there’s move in the next 24 hours. I had expressed my doubts here that it was possible for him to make the club, so as a friend of mine says, I stand corrected in my orthopedic shoes. There’s no doubt that Noll is a better hitter than Sanchez, and with two other limited hitters already on the bench in Stevenson and Difo, it makes sense to keep the better PH option.
