Syracuse – OFF DAY
After taking two of three from the Bulls, the Chiefs were swept in four straight by the Bats by a cumulative score of 28-6 over the weekend. Weather permitting, they’ll play four this week in Norfolk and three in Durham before returning to Syracuse on the 30th.
Portland 6 Harrisburg 0
• Darnell (L, 6-5) 5⅓ IP, 6H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 3K, HR
• Kieboom 1-4, 2B
• Jones 1-4, BB
Four Portland pitchers combined on six-hit, 6-0 shutout of Harrisburg in the series opener. Logan Darnell lost for the fifth time as he gave up three runs on six hits (one HR) and two walks over five and a 1/3rd innings. He struck out three. Each of the Sens relievers gave up a run but it was a moot point as the team put on 10 baserunners (six hits, three walk, one error) and all ten of them were left on. Reigning E.L. Player of the week Hunter Jones was the sole Harrisburg batter to reach base twice while Carter Kieboom collected the only extra-base hit, a two-out double in the 7th.
Salem 3 Potomac 1
• Johnston (L, 1-1) 4IP, 5H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 3K, HR
• Crownover 3IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Sagdal 3-3, 2-2B, BB, RBI
• Banks 1-4
Ian Sagdal’s 20th double and third hit of the game broke up the Red Sox shutout, but the Salem nine still prevailed, 3-1 in the series finale. Kyle Johnson gave up all three Sox runs on five hits, including a solo HR, over four innings. He walked two and struck out three over four innings. Matt Crownover spun three scoreless innings and A.J. Bogucki kept Salem off the board in the 8th, but the Potomac offense had just one hit aside from Sagdal, a single by Nick Banks with one out in the 5th. Roster moves: LHP Matt Crownover activated from 7-Day DL; RHP Jorge Pantoja placed on 7-Day DL.
Hagerstown vs. Delmarva – PPD
Rain washed away yet another Hagerstown game, but set up an extra-long happy hour a doubleheader on Thursday, which is the next day that it’s not supposed to rain this week.
Auburn – OFF DAY
Yesterday was the last scheduled off day before the NYPL All-Star Break for the Doubledays, as they resume their current road trip with their one and only series against the Tri-City Valley Cats.
GCL Nationals 1 GCL Marlins 0 – SUSP., 4th
• Strom 3IP, 4H, 0R, 0BB, 3K
• Pogue 1-2, R, 2B
• Cropley 2-2
Rain interrupted this midway through the 4th with the G-Nats leading the G-Marlins, 1-0. They’ll finish it on Saturday morning. Roster move: RHP Bobby Milacki placed on 60-Day DL.
Another hit for Daniel Johnson, who seems to be making good contact in the GCL. Hope he can make it back to Harrisburg for the last month of the season.
Also another hit for Nick Banks, who is at .300 for his Potomac stint, albeit without a lot of power. Luke, what’s your take on Banks? There certainly have been a lot of OF prospects come through Potomac over the last couple of years, with Robles, Soto, Johnson, Agustin, and perhaps Wiseman with his HR power (but defensive struggles).
Banks was pretty highly touted coming out of A & M, it was a long slog getting out of Hagerstown.
The Nats gave him 500K so they’ll give him every chance and he’s only 23.
Here’s a good overview of just how highly touted Banks was going into his junior season at A&M — he was being mentioned as a potential top 10 overall pick:

I’m not seeing the hype from the article. Banks so far to me is a faster and younger Ian Sagdal, who also hits well but with not much power.
Interesting.
What’s it going to take for Sagdal to get a bump to Harrisburg?
Update on the 3 Nats farmhands traded to KC for Kelvin Herrera last month:
Kelvin Guiterrez: AA – 24 G 93 PA 1 HR 1 SB .236/.269/.348/.617
Yohanse Morel (he’s still 17): Rookie – 5 G 20.2 IP 20Ks 5 BB 20Ks 1.065 WHIP 3.48 ERA
Blake Perkins: A (Wilmington) – 29 G 135 PA 1 HR 8 SB .280/.417/.383/.800
Off topic, but did any of y’all see the update with Nats AGM Doug Harris and how his cancer has returned and how his family, thru the team, had to ask for crowd-sourcing to help pay for his treatment, which led to more than a little heat for the Nats front office.
Given that Harris is pretty hands-on for the part of the organization we follow here, was curious what the rest of you guys thought about it.
Personally, I feel for the guy and his family but it chaps my ass that he had to resort to asking the public for help with his medical treatment and I think it makes the Lerners look, well, not good.
I’m a pancreatic cancer survivor who was fortunate enough to have good insurance or I’d probably be dead. Agree completely. This is a good indicator that the Lerner family is not all warm and cuddly per the propaganda, but really just a quieter version of Peter Angelos.
PS – promote Wiseman!
Boy is the air out of the Nats balloon. Hope Rizzo is sitting on his many veteran cards until July 27 before stirring the pot in a post-Machado/Britton frenzy world.
The balloon on the Nats is rapidly deflating.
Here’s hoping Rizzo is timing his veteran movements for post-Oriole last minute panic buyers 7/29-7/30. Lots of bargains to create.
What deals you have in mind , Gil?
The idea of Harper staying is totally unrealistic. Signing him as a healthy underperformer to a lengthy contract with no team protection with Eaton and Soto established as all-star caliber talents and with Robles poised to ascend is unwise if they can parlay him into a real upper minor return. It’s a question of what kind of marquee prospect he might fetch. If Britton could be packaged to get…
With Zimm getting a chance to restore value, and the Nats having Reynolds and Adams, something has to give. Reynolds has been a real contributor and has value. Herrera or Kintzler are other such pieces, especially if the team is in sell mode.
One can make an argument to sell Jeremy Hellickson, even as the team will want to resign him.
There is a lot of talent with expiring contracts from which to draw a lot of prospect depth. There would still be a lot left as a core to add free agent pieces after the year.
We have to stop fearing life after Harper. Expo fans lived this and that was in the age of no compensatory options and deadline deals that were different because the team always contended. This team is moribund and lacks someone to carry it forward.
I think Robles is that guy. But I can’t see room for him with Harper on the roster.
