Rochester 4 Syracuse 3
• Simms (L, 2-3) 4⅓ IP, 6H, 4R, 1ER, 3BB, 1K, 0HR
• Adams 2IP, 0H, 0R, 0ER, 0BB, 4K
• Gosewich 2-3, R, 2-2B, BB
• Wilson 2-4, R, 2B
The Chief posted a picket fence and the RedWings knocked it down with a four-run 3rd to take the series opener, 4-3. John Simms got the spot start and was charged with all four Rochester runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks over four and a 1/3rd innings for his third loss. David Goforth stranded two while finishing the 5th and pitched a scoreless 6th while Austin Adams was perfect in the 7th and 8th to give the offense a chance to come back. They didn’t. Tuffy Gosewich doubled twice and walked once to lead Syracuse’s 10-hit parade. Roster moves: RHPs Austin Voth, Wander Suero optioned from Washington.
Bowie 5 Harrisburg 4 (10 inn.)
• Estevez 4⅔ IP, 7H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 5K
• Self 2⅔ IP, 3H, 0R, 0BB, 3K, 2-0 IR-S
• Ames (L, 2-1) 1IP, 1H, 2R, 1ER, 2BB, 2K
• Read 2-4, RBI
• Davidson 1-3, R, BB, HR, RBI
Harrisburg never led in this one, but tied it twice to send it to extras where they were outscored 2-1 in the 10th to lose, 5-4. Wirkin “For the Weekend” Estevez got knocked from the box in the 5th and gave up two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five. The loss went to Jeff Ames, who let in the free runner and one of his own on a hit and two walks while fanning two. Raudy Read’s second single with two outs in the bottom of the 10th plated the fourth run as he led the Sens hit column of eight. Austin Davidson also homered and walked. Roster move: RHP Jefry Rodriguez recalled to Washington.
Potomac – ALL-STAR BREAK
• R. Pena ⅔ IP, 2H, R, ER, 0BB, 1K, 2-2 IR-S
• Mills ⅔ IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 0K
• Kieboom 3-5, 2R, HR, RBI
• Barrera 1-2, R, BB, HR, RBI
• Noll 0-0, SF, BB, RBI
Carter Kieboom and Tres Barrera both started and homered but the North Division lost to the South, 7-6 in the Carolina League All-Star Game. Jake Noll also started and drove in a run on a sacrifice fly while taking a walks before he was lifted in favor of someone else the scouts wished to see from the game. Ronald Pena had a hand in the loss as he let in two inherited runners and one of his own over 2/3rds of an inning. Jordan Mills also pitched 2/3rds of an inning. Sources are telling us Tyler Mapes will be called up today to Harrisburg; Mapes, Sterling Sharp, and Wil Crowe did not make the trip to Zebulon
Hagerstown – ALL-STAR BREAK
• Raquet 1IP, 2H, 2R, 2ER, 0BB, 2K, HR
• Banks 0-1, K
Likewise, the Southern Division beat the Northern Division in the Sally League’s All-Star Game, 9-5. Nick Raquet was roughed up for two runs on a single and a homer in his single inning pitched while Nick Banks whiffed in his at-bat off the bench while playing right field.
Williamsport 4 Auburn 0
• Stoeckinger (L, 0-1) 5IP, 5H, R, ER, BB, 4K
• Canning 2-4, CS
• Jo. Sanchez 2-3
Auburn was shut out on five hits, 4-0 by Williamsport. Jackson Stoeckinger gave up just one run over five innings on five hits and a walk while fanning four but suffered the loss. Neither O.T. (Other Trey) Turner nor Jhonatan German were effective in relief as they combined to allow three runs the rest of the way. Gage Canning and Jose Sanchez bot hsingled twice while Isreal Pineda doubled to comprise the Doubledays hit column. Roster moves: IF Jason Martinson assigned from Syracuse for MiLB rehab; RHPs Ryan Tapani (21st Rd. Pick, son of Kevin) and Frankie Bartow (11th Rd.) assigned from Washington.
GCL Nationals – OFF DAY
After an early off day, the G-Nats are back at it today in Port St. Lucie to face the G-Mets.
Have a night Carter Kieboom! Good for him.
For those clamoring for the Nats to do more to develop relievers in-house, keep an eye on Frankie Bartow. Also make note of Austin Adams’s dominant appearance. Adams just seems to get over-amped in his few MLB chances and not be able to find the plate. For another reliever option, I’d think about converting J-Rod, although that probably won’t happen right away with the upper minors so thin with viable MLB starter options.
Nice to see a good start from Stoeckinger,
Luke , an out of the box question
Looking again at Springfieldfan
Revised XST/TBD list : Porte, Jake Cousins , Weston Davis ..etc are they awaiting a spot to open up on an affiliate via somebody ‘s release ?
Plus are there kids in the DSL academy not even listed on DSL but are under contract attending classes but not in games?
Not sure if any MLB teams “develop” relievers, at least they don’t initially. With rare exceptions (Drew Storen), pitchers are drafted or signed internationally as starters, and then prospects who have problems developing a third pitch or fail as a starter fall into a reliever role.
The Yankees are considered to have the best bullpen in baseball, but most of their bullpen crew was not “developed” by their organization or were not “developed” as relievers:
Aroldis Chapman – Reds acquired as a FA
David Robertson – Yankees, White Sox acquired in a trade
Chad Green – Tigers acquired in a trade
Dellin Betances – Yankees draft pick in 2006; starting pitcher from rookie ball to AAA; did not become a reliever until 2013
Chasen Shreve – Braves acquired via trade
Tommy Kahnle – Rockies and White Sox; acquired via trade
AJ Cole – Nats, A’s acquired via trade
My favorite made up saying : bullpens evolve
Harrisburg minus Kelvin G Game 1
Today vs Bowie. 9 Runs. Ward up to 7 HRs. Norfolk /Perez handle 3b
GCL : Ro Sosa can play c, 2b,1b
Colton Pogue playing off SS @ 3b
Pittsburg St alum.
I still hold out for Ryan Brinley to get healthy .
And let’s see what’s up with Tommy Peterson on POTNATS DL.
Jason Martinson off the DL rehabbing @ auburn to return to Cuse to play some 3b and other spots ?
Great at bat by Jacob Rhinesmith vs Phillies second LHP out of the pen Abdallah Aris. 11 pitch AB ends up with a single to left.
Ends up Rhinesmith grew up south of Twin Cities then W KY.
“The trip to Zebulon” sounds like it was a John Wayne movie.
Very curious to see what baby Nats get promoted mid-season and really hope Carter Kieboom is one of them. Can see him challenging for a spot with the big team next year if he gets time at AA this year.
No doubt Kieboomer will make his MLB debut next season. Only question is whether it will be early in the year (just late enough to gain a year of control) at 2B with Difo acting as a place holder, or later in the season to help fortify the big club down the stretch.
Do you guys think it all possible we could see Kieboom get a cup of coffee in September if he performs if/when he gets to AA? Nats are aggressive with their top prospects who perform. Last year Robles was in the same position Kieboom is in now in High A and close to AA. Then boom he was in big leagues in September surprisingly. Soto just shot through as well.
Really unlikely absent a massive cluster of injuries.
Soto was a really rare case, and even he wouldn’t be up with the Nats right now had Eaton and Kendrick both been injured at the same time.
Yes but his situation is more comparable to Robles a year ago especially if Murphy can’t consistently play 2nd. I didn’t expect Robles to be brought up but they gave him a cup.
The air is hot around City Isle.
HRs by Ward , Collier and Read.
Colby R for Baysox . Neat DH
Now if Crowe Mapes and Sharp go to
Senators . Then Keister and Narron will have Crownover , RAquet, Bourne ( off DL?), Braymer and ” bullpen Day “?
Don’t be surprised by H’burg demotion to accompany Mapes/Sharp/Crowe going up. Wirkin? Don’t be surprised by fast Romero promotion to Potomac either.
Wirken hit the proverbial AA ceiling .
Gil there are guys who grab the ball from first pitch and go 5-7 IP then there are the guys who go 3-4 like Kyle J, Hill then hand the ballot guys like JJ or Taylor Gilabeau but maybe he might join Braymer as a
1-6 starter . If if
Ballot – ball to
Gil I saw Seth this past Sunday. Filthy slider
Jared Johnson/Kyle Johnston/Brigham Hill all waiting to join rotation and show their wares.
Safe to say one of the reasons Potomac won first half division
Was because of the accumulated QS from the trio heading to Harrisburg
Crowe , Mapes& Sharp. Other affiliates have to muster up evenings
With 3-5 guys taking the mound.
