Funny how S. Kieboom has handled his ‘promotion’. He was playing generally terrible baseball in Harrisburg, then got promoted because of Severino’s injury, and has seemingly found himself again, batting .360/.429/.560. It’s only been 8 games, but maybe we’ve found a decent alternative to Jose Lobaton. I’m not sure how much longer the Nats can justify his .144 AVG.
I’m starting to think that we are going to see Edwin Jackson on the big club again as a long man. It makes sense for Rizzo to try anything he can, I guess.
I think they also wanted starter insurance considering the ups and downs both Ross and Roark have had, plus the possibility of injury to the other guys (perish the thought!). Cole and Voth haven’t exactly been doing much to prove they would be ready, and the Fedde reliever experiment continues.
Speaking of relievers, Austin Adams hasn’t given up a run in his last eight outings, during which he has K’d 14. He’s got to get a look with the big club sooner or later, right? Meanwhile, Solis struggled again last night for Syracuse . . . as Grace did for the big club.
Agree that Jackson was signed as a potential starter. Nats have been very lucky to have only needed to start someone other than Max, Stras, Gio, Tanner or Joe, for 4 games all season:
– The Guthrie debacle (he has been released)
– Jacob Turner two starts (Nats seem to feel he is better suited for the pen)
– AJ Cole (he has a 5.75 ERA and 1.6 WHIP in AAA; hard to be confident in that option)
The time is coming when a Nats starter is going to need to sit, and the Nats have no one in the wings that can be reliably counted on. Jackson has been added to the mix as a potential 5th starter, and would call him the front-runner to step into the rotation if Jackson can string together a handful of decent AAA starts.
So the GCL league started today and the Nats started five Latin American kids who haven’t turned 18, one of whom is still 16 for a couple more weeks.
After signing 3 SS last summer, we all wondered who’d play where. For one game, Luis Garcia is at short (and batting leadoff), Yasel Antuna is at second (and batting second) and Jose Sanchez is at third (batting sixth).
Catcher Israel Pineda is batting seventh and CF Ricardo Mendez 9th.
Antuna tripled in his first at-bat while Sanchez, the 16-year old, drew a walk and scored.
Late round 2017 round picks Jamori Blash (23rd rd. ) and Jackson Cramer (35th) are starting at DH and 1B respectively.
Wade Davis, presumably on a rehab assignment, got the start on the hill.
Sorry, Weston Davis, not Wade.
The GCL Nats win a wild and sloppy won, overcoming errors with 8 9th inning runs (in part thanks to passed balls and HBPs) to beat the GCL Mets 9-7.
*Yasel Antuna started at SS and batted second. He went 3-for-5 with a walk, a triple and a run scored. That’s the good. He also committed THREE errors, which led to multiple unearned runs, and was picked off first.
*Israel Pineda started at catcher. He went 4-for-5 with a triple, scored twice and drove in three.
*Luis Garcia started at 2B and batted leadoff. He went 1-for-5 with a walk and scored a run. He also committed an error.
*Jose Sanchez started at 3rd. He went 0-for-3 with 2 walks and scored twice.
*Ricardo Mendez started at CF and went 1-for-4 with a triple, an HBP and an RBI.
*Among the “older” field players, 1B Jackson Cramer went 1-for-4 with a walk, DH Jamori Blash went 1-for-4, 19-year old RF Edwin Ventura went 1-for-4 with 2 RBI and a run, and LF Santo Falcon, 20, went 0-for-2 with 2 walks a run a sac. Blash and Cramer were also HBP.
*On the mound, Weston Davis went 4 innings and allowed 4 runs, 3 earned, on 4 hits and 2 BB with 4 strikeouts.
*Lefty Darly Infante, 20, pitched 2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit with a K.
*22-year old Gabe Klobosits, a 6-7 righty from Auburn they took in the 36th round this month, got the win after two scoreless innings with 2 hits, a walk and a strikeout.
*Jose De Los Santos, 20, pitched the 9th and allowed zero hits, walked two and three unearned runs thanks to three 9th inning errors.
If you’re keeping track, 7 of the 9 field players and 2 of the 4 pitchers used today are Latin American signings and all are 20 or younger.
Antuna!!!
