Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 7 Syracuse 6 – COMP.
• Solis (BS, 1; L, 0-1) 1⅓ IP, 2H, 3R, 3ER, BB, 0K, HR
• Fedde 1⅔ IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, K
• Stevenson 3-5, 2-3B
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 3 Syracuse 1 – GAME TWO
• Stevenson 1-3, CS (10G Hit streak)
Reading 9 Harrisburg 2
• Simms (L, 3-5) 6IP, 11H, 6R, 6ER, BB, 4K, HBP
• Read 2-4
• Hernandez 2-3, R, 2B, BB
The Fightins scored three times in the 6th to break open a 3-1 game en route to a 9-2 smackdown of the Sens. John Simms took the brunt of the beating, giving up six runs on 11 hits and a walk while striking out four over six innings. Yadiel Hernandez singled, doubled, and walked while Raudy Read went 2-for-4 to lead Harrisburg’s 10-hit parade.
Potomac 12 Myrtle Beach 5
• Silvestre (W, 7-2) 5IP, 5H, 3R, 2ER, 3BB, 5K, HR
• Schepel 2IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 4K
• Masters 3-4, BB, 2RBI
• Mejia 3-5, R, HR, 4RBI
• Sagdal 2-6, R, 2B
Potomac scored eight times in the 1st, once in the 2nd, and thrice in the 4th in a 12-5 demolition of Myrtle Beach. Hector Silvestre won for the 7th time as he pitched five innings of three-run ball on five hits and three walks. Every P-Nat batter hit safely, with David Masters and Bryan Mejia leading the charge with six hits and six RBI combined.
Hagerstown 3 Delmarva 1
• M. Mills (W, 9-2) 7IP, 4H, R, ER, BB, 5K, HBP
• Howard (SV, 1) 2IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Johnson 2-4, R, 3B, 2RBI, SB
• Corredor 2-4, R
The Suns took their sixth straight with a 3-1 win over the Shorebirds. McKenzie Mills took his ninth “W” with the lone Delmarva run let in on four hits and a walk over seven innings. Hayden Howard worked around a pair of singles in the 8th and 9th and put up two donuts to earn his first save. Daniel Johnson and Aldrem Corredor both went 2-for-4 with a run scored, with Johnson driving in two to lead the Suns offense.
State College 7 Auburn 1
• Ramirez (L, 1-1) 3IP, 3H, 4R, 4ER, 3BB, 1K, HBP, BK
• Encarnacion 2-4, R, 2B
• Panaccione 1-4, 3B
There would be no taming of the Shew for Auburn as the State College starter dominated the Doubledays, 7-1. Yonathan Ramirez was quite the opposite as the Spikes got to him for four runs on three hits and three walks over three innings for the loss. Randy Encarcnacion doubled while Paul Panaccione tripled as the Doubledays collected 10 hits total. Roster move: 1B Jake Scudder (16th Rd. Pick, Kansas State) assigned from Washington.
GCL Nationals 2 GCL Marlins 1
• Luzardo 4IP, 4H, R, ER, 0BB, 7K, 2WP
• Jimenez (W, 1-0) 1IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 0K
• Antuna 1-3, BB
• Cramer 1-3, BB
• J. Sanchez 1-3, R, BB, RBI
Jesus Luzardo struck out seven over four innings in his professional debut while the G-Nats walked off the G-Marlins, 2-1. Luzardo gave up a run and four hits without a walk. Jose Sanchez walked, took second on defensive indifference (really? in a 1-1 game? Let’s get this scorekeeper to Woodbridge!), third on a single by Juan Pascal, and scored on an error. That made a winner out of Jose Jimenez for pitching a scoreless 9th. Sanchez, Yasel Antuna, and Jackson Cramer each went 1-for-3 with a walk to lead the G-Nats’ five-hit, six-walk offense.
Roster move: RHP Jose Morales assigned from Hagerstown for MiLB rehab.
Stay hot, Stevenson. You might find yourself in Oakland before you know it!
He is such trade-bait right now.
Especially with Goodwin hitting well with the parent club. Far less of a need for Stevenson than we thought there’d be when Eaton went down.
Could Dan Gamache signing be
Part of the plan to eventually replace Drew Ward @ Harrisburg
After a possible Oakland bullpen
Trade ?
Even with being 9.5 games up in NL East , the BS by Treinen this afternoon was… a bummer ..
Rizzo said that now Fedde’s innings have been limited they are going to start stretching him back out to eventually start some games in Cuse. Nats are leaving their options to call Fedde up as either a starter or a reliever.
Mc Mills and Dan Johnson have nothing left to prove in Hagerstown. I would post the stats for Tebow that got him promoted vs. those of Johnson, in the same league but that’s just too easy. I would think that Mills would be rapidly rising as someone teams would be inquiring about in trades. Has anyone seen anything on how hard Mills throws?
Solis is not “rehabbing” well at all. His confidence may need more rehabbing than his arm.
I’m interested to see what Scudder can do at Auburn. He’s a lower-round college senior with some new-found power this year.
OK, I couldn’t resist . . . Luke’s favorite player’s Carolina League stats this year: .220/.311/.336, with 3 HRs and 69 Ks. Daniel Johnson: .313/.376/.575, with 16 HRs and 51 Ks. And which one has gotten promoted???
I guess we should just be thankful that Tebow doesn’t have Johnson’s stats. The mania would be (even more) overwhelming.
Err, SALLY league stats. We’ll see how Johnson does in the Carolina League soon (hopefully).
Add Sterling Sharp and Sheldon Neuse to that overdue for a trip to Potomac list.
Yep. Sharp and Mc Mills both seem to have made huge strides this year. With their size, a lot may have had to do with repeatable delivery.
After the Eaton trade, i thought for sure the farm system would take a big hit.
But, you know what, I’ve been pleasantly surprised about how things have gone thus far and actually think we still have a top ten system.
Soto, C.Kieboom, Mills, Johnson, Watson, Perkins, Neuse have all exceeded my expectations (Robles and Feede are performing as well i thought they would and so is Stevenson to be honest).
Throw in the potentials of this year’s draftees, Luzardo and the international bonus babies, and things are looking up!
My only real disappointment is Franco – really thought he was gonna bust out, but it’s been a struggle for him all year. And Drew Ward – the injury seems to have set him back after a decent start.
Flying very much under the radar, Hayden Howard also deserves some mention. He was basically the Andrew Miller super-reliever for Texas Tech’s run to the CWS last year. He had a couple of rocky outings early this season that burned his ERA and WHIP, but if you look at his last 10 games, he’s pitched 27.2 innings and only given up three runs (only one at a time in any game), with 26/9 K/BB. He may see some time in Woodbridge before the summer’s done.
What kind of velocity does Howard have?
I have no idea, just as I asked about Mills above. I suspect from where Howard was drafted (12th round) that it’s not as hard as we’d like, but at 6-5, perhaps some mechanical adjustments can produce more torque.
Alex Troop, the 6-5 lefty the Nats took in the 9th round from Michigan State this year, doesn’t look like he’ll be in the GCL for long.
He started today and threw three scoreless and hitless innings, allowing one walk and fanning two. Someone in the Nats organization is probably booking him a flight to upstate New York right about now.
Disregard my last post – the MiLB boxscore has changed Troop’s stats three times so I’m not sure how much he actually threw today.
Final pitching line, presumably correct, per MiLB. All pitchers the GCL Nats used were from this year’s draft.
Alex Troop – 6-5 LHP, Michigan State (9th rd.) – 2 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 R, 2 K
Kyle Johnston – 6-0 RHP, Texas (6th rd.) – 2 IP, 0 H, 2 BB, 0 R, 1 K
Jake Cousins – 6-4 RHP, Penn (20th rd.) – 2/3 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 R, 1 K
David Smith – 6-4 RHP, Long Beach State (25th rd.) – 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 R, 0 K
Jeremy McKinney – 6-0 RHP, Indiana State (31st rd.) – 2 IP, 2 H, 0 BB, 0 R, 3 K
Jared Brasher – 6-1 RHP, Samford (8th rd.) – 1 IP, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 R, 0 K
Baby Nats won 3-1. Almost all of the field players were young international signees.
The GCL Nats clubhouse dynamic must be hilarious. A bunch of teenage Latinos mixed in with a bunch of college guys (including an Ivy Leaguer). One of things that makes, minor league baseball awesome.
