Charlotte 4 Syracuse 0 – GAME ONE
• Voth (L, 1-5) 6IP, 6H, 4R, 4ER, 3BB, 2K, 3HR
• Snyder, Severino, Joseph 0-2, BB
Former Nats uber-prospect Lucas Giolito tossed a seven-inning no-hitter against Syracuse; must have been the underwear. It also helped facing the 10th-best (4th worst) offense in I.L. Austin Voth went six innings but lost for the fifth time in nine starts with all four Charlotte runs allowed on six hits, including three homers. He walked three and struck out two. The Chiefs drew three walks but Giolito still needed just 87 pitches to get 21 outs from 24 batters faced.
Syracuse 8 Charlotte 4 – GAME TWO
• Arias 4IP, 6H, 2R, 2ER, 0BB, 1K, HR
• Gott (W, 2-0) 2IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Robinson 3-4, R, HR, 2RBI
• Green 3-4, 2R, 2B, RBI
• Sanchez 2-4, R, 2-2B
After falling behind 2-0 in the 1st, the Chiefs offense woke up in the nightcap and doubled up the Knights, 8-4. Gabriel Arias let in two runs over four innings in the spot start on six hits without a walk. Trevor Gott threw two scoreless innings to pick up the win in relief while Neal Cotts cleaned up Joe Nathan’s mess (2R, 2H, BB in ⅔ IP) in the 7th for a save. Clint Robinson and Grant Green both went 3-for-4 to lead the Syracuse offense.
Harrisburg vs. Erie – PPD
Rain sent the Senators home early as the game was postponed until next Saturday, when they’ll shoot to make this one up with a twi-night doubleheader. Roster move: C Nick Rickles traded to Philadelphia.
Potomac vs. Frederick – PPD
SSDL, but the makeup game will be in Frederick on June 5 as the Keys will not return to Woodbridge before the end of the first half. Roster moves: IF David Masters activated from the 7-Day DL; OF Telmito Agustin placed on the 3-Day TIL.
Hagerstown vs. West Virginia – PPD
It’s been a rough week in West Virginia as the Power had its fourth straight rainout. Unlike the previous three games, they’ll have a chance to make this up with a doubleheader tonight. Roster move: RHP A.J. Bogucki activated from the 7-day DL.
It’s not just the no hits, as the Chiefs became the first team not to score on Giolito, and in fact only the second not to score at least three runs. He just hasn’t been very good. Even last night, he only struck out three. As I’ve said, I wish him well, but it’s really looking like he’s not going to live up to being the generational talent he was once thought to be. For one night, though, he got to dominate a number of his former teammates.
Meanwhile, back with our current players, the Nathan experiment is starting to look shaky. He did have a streak of seven straight scoreless appearances, although he gave up at least one hit in every one of them. He’s now given up three runs then two runs in his last two outings.
On the flipside, Gott hasn’t given up a run in his last seven outings and has only given up single hits in two of those appearances. His WHIP is down to 1.17. He looks like the next man up in the big club’s bullpen roulette.
I agree with you on Gott. I’d like to see him get a chance, and he has some big league success in his past. So maybe he can be one of the answers.
As for Giolito, I’m glad to see him have success, even though I also agree with you that he does not look like a guy who was the top pitcprospect in baseball at one point. He has had a really tough year and he’s barely no longer a kid, so hopefully this boosts his confidence. Plus, for those interested in grading the trade, it should be mostly about how Eaton does. I’ve never agreed with the sentiment of rooting against a guy you traded so you don’t look bad.
I think many would have claimed that Lopez was arguably equal to if not surpassed Giolito at the time of the trade. The past 2 months have only further confirmed that.
After a rocky start, Lopez has again been brilliant. In May, he’s posted a 1.59 ERA, 22.2 IP, 22 K, 1.10 WHIP.
Dane Dunning’s hot start ended fast with his promotion. He posted some outrageous numbers in low A (0.35 ERA, in 26 innings, 0.59 WHIP, with a 2:33 BB:K ratio), but since getting promoted to the Carolina League, he’s been pretty bad: 5.79 ERA, 14 IP, 1.71 WHIP, 10:14 BB:K. Let’s see if/how he bounces back, but it’s still looking like Lopez will be the centerpiece of this deal.
At the time of the trade, I wrote that I would be pulling for the guys traded, and that they didn’t have to fail for the trade to be a success for the Nats. Before he got hurt, Eaton sure looked like the real deal, and the Nats have him four more years at a bargain rate.
A whole lot of people with a whole lot of experience evaluating prospects were convinced that Giolito was the real deal. Were they all wrong? Did the Nats rush him and bust his confidence? Where did the supposed upper-90s heater go? Was it ever really there in the first place?
Will, thanks for the update on Lopez and Dunning. I’ve always pointed out that the Carolina League seems to be a big step for most pitchers. Giolito and particularly Lopez got roughed up there.
