The first game in July started off well for Syracuse, but in the end they fell to Richmond, 5-4 in 10 innings on Tuesday night. It was their second extra-inning loss to the Bisons in the four-game series. In the 1st inning, Syracuse took an early lead on Steven Souza’s first of two home runs on the night. Chiefs starter Josh Roenicke then surrendered the lead as the Bisons scored four runs on five hits in the 4th. In the 6th inning, Syracuse cut into Buffalo’s lead and then tied the game on Souza’s RBI single in the 7th. The Bisons’ A.J. Jimenez drove in the winning run off losing pitcher Warner Madrigal in the 10th inning.
Roster move: 1B-DH Brock Peterson traded to Dodgers for cash considerations.

Richmond 3 Harrisburg 2

After allowing two runs in the 1st inning, Harrisburg starter Paolo Espino settled down and did not allow a run for the next five innings, giving his team a chance to get back in the game. The Senators then tied it up in the 6th inning on Kevin Keyes’ two-run home run, which was his 12th since being called up to Harrisburg in late April. However, the Flying Squirrels answered with the go-ahead and eventual winning run in the 7th inning off losing pitcher Paul Demny. The loss is Harrisburg’s third consecutive and 50th overall defeat of the 2014 season. Roster moves: RHP Zach Kroenke reassigned from Syracuse; RHP Scott McGregor placed on the 7-Day DL.

Wilmington 8 Potomac 2

A four-run 4th, followed by a three-run 5th turned a 1-0 game into a blowout as Wilmington rocked Potomac for an 8-2 win. Matt Spann was charged with all eight runs (five earned) on seven hits and a walk over five innings. He stuck one and a hit batter while taking his third loss of the season. Shawn Pleffner tripled and scored on the first of two singles from Randolph Oduber to break up the shutout in the 5th while Oscar Tejeda singled with two out in the 8th for the second P-Nats run. Tony Renda led the Potomac charge with two singles and a walk from the leadoff spot to push his batting average to a team-best .306.

Hagerstown stole a run in the 1st but was otherwise stifled by Lakewood’s Yacksel Rios as he outdueled Nick Pivetta for a 2-1 win. Rafael Bautista got plunked, stole second, and took third on a sacrifice. Following a walk to Isaac Ballou, the two executed a double steal for the lone Suns run. Pivetta gave up both BlueClaws runs on eight hits and a walk over seven innings while striking out four in his fourth loss. Rios let up just one hit (a single to Narciso Mesa) and two walks over eight innings for the win, his second. Ballou doubled with one out in the 9th but was stranded as Spencer Kieboom popped out and Drew Ward grounded out to end the game.

An RBI triple followed by a balk “highlighted” Auburn’s two-out, two-run rally in the 6th as they took the series opener from Mahoning Valley, 5-2. The sequence made a winner of Jefry Rodriguez, his first of the season, as the 20-y.o. scattered nine hits over six innings with no walks and one strikeout. Robert Orlan followed with two scoreless for the hold while Samuel Johns worked around an error in the 9th for the save. Raudy Read reached base four times with two singles, a double and a walk to lead the Doubledays offense.
Roster moves: RHPs Austen Williams, Chase McDowell reassigned from the GCL Nationals; RHPs Cory Bafidis, Jake Joyce released.

The D-Nats rallied for two in the 9th but fell one run short for a 7-6 loss to the D-Yankees1. Starter Carlos Acevedo was charged with five runs (two earned) on eight hits and two walks over six innings in his first loss. Joshual Ramirez went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the hitters, while Gilberto Ramirez went 3-for-4 on the basepaths to lead the baserunners as the D-Nats got nine hits and stole five bases for the game.
