Catching Up On Transactions

Catching Up On Transactions
It’s been nearly silent on the transaction front for the past 2-3 weeks. With yesterday’s post from BA, along with some tweets from the estimable Bill Ladson, we have a few moves to pass along:

  • Signed C Chris Snyder
  • Signed IF Taylor Wrenn
  • Re-signed IF Will Rhymes
  • Re-signed RHP Ryan Tatusko
  • Released RHP Michael Boyden
  • Released RHP Mike Mudron

Snyder is a former Arizona farmhand who spent 2013 catching for Los Angeles (AL) and Baltimore (MD) at the AAA, save for a nine-game stint for the Orioles last May. He also received an invitation to spring training.

Wrenn is the son of Diamondbacks scout Luke Wrenn and was drafted in 2011 by Cincinnati out of the Univ. of Tampa (yes, he was a teammate of Shawn Pleffner) but did not play until 2012. The Reds released him after that season despite a combined line of .285/.362/.350 in 35 games for Billings (Rookie) and three for Dayton (Low-A) at the age of 22. He played 59 games last summer for the Traverse City Beach Bums of the independent Frontier League and was picked up by the Rangers, who played him for six games in Low-A Hickory and 11 games in the Arizona League. He was granted free agency in November.

Rhymes and Tatusko were teammates for the Syracuse Chiefs in 2013 and will likely resume their roles as utility infielder and swingman, respectively.

Boyden and Mudron were the Nats’ 31st and 32nd Round picks in 2012 out of the Univ. of Maryland and Cal State San Berandino, respectively.

Can understand the Boyden release (I had him as a release candidate after he posted a 2.27 whip as a 23-yr old in the rookie league), but Mudron is a bit curious. Yes his ERA was high but his fip was just 2.77, and a quarter of his runs allowed this year occurred in one ugly 1 1/3 inning outing. Bummer; not that a 32nd rounder was expected to shine but I thought he would get at least one more year. (Also, is Mudron a LHP or a RHP? milb says righty, our draft tracker says lefty, fangraphs says lefty, baseball prospectus says righty, baseballcube says lefty and perfectgame says lefty. I’m pretty sure he’s a LHP … but have you ever seen so much discrepancy in these sites on a player?)

In the 2012 draft tracker on mlb.com, they list him as a LHP. If they got that wrong on the day he was drafted, he’d have to make it to the majors before it would get sorted out everywhere.

He pitched in Auburn left year, LHP.

Be interesting to see who ends up in the Syracuse rotation this time around? Is Brad Meyers going to pitch this season and will he start? Chris Young was re-upped. Is Mandel coming back? We know that Clay and Maya are gone. The fact that both and especially Clay are gone I think sends a signal that there will be more than one promotion from AA this time around. Trienen? Karns? Hill? And Tatusko has to be considered a possibility as well. The lefties, Purke, Solis, and perhaps at some point Mooneyham seem destined for H’burg.

And I guess Rosenbaum will again be a starter / swingman along with the right-handed Tatusko in Syracuse possibly mirroring the major league pitching staff.

… and it looks like Rizzo might just bring back Jamey Carroll to compete with Espinosa and Walters.

    Follow the friendships
Rizzo just hired Jamey’s Cracker Barrel
    Viera expo buddy Barrett
Frank loved Carroll who should be a great

Peric, I would think all three you mentioned will be at Syracuse at the start of the season. Tatusko in the pen. And add Schwartz to the Harrisburg rotation. Of course, where Roark and Jordan end up will affect everything.

So, if Blake Schwartz was so critical why didn’t he make anyone’s watch list? I don’t see Potomac games but I do follow Syracuse and to some extent H’burg.

Peric, FYI, Luke has Schwartz on his watchlist. The writeup made me look a little deeper in to his stats.

Let’s see if he makes the BA Prospect or Sickels’s books, both of which are due out later this month. I envision Schwartz filling out the Harrisburg rotation the way Taylor Hill did, except that he may begin with the Sens sooner.

Schwartz was the real story in nats farm
First half season before Ray , Karns and Cole
Took off. He was glue to Potnats staff

BA lists Tyler Robertson as re-signed as well? I thought he was already in the fold and that’s how SYR has him listed. I’m a bit confused … 😉

    1. Luke Erickson says:
      January 14, 2014 at 5:36 pm

The latest BA post (yesterday) contained everything but Robertson, which wasn’t enough to warrant a post. Officially, Robertson was granted FA on Nov. 20, 2013 and resigned January 8, 2014.
