Jeff Mandel got the win with seven strong innings, limiting the Pawsox to two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four. Middle infielders Zach Walters and Jarrett Hoffpauir both went 2-for-4 with a double as Syracuse registered eight hits total. Richmond completed the sweep of Harrisburg with a 2-1 win in 13 innings, handing the Senators their fourth straight loss overall. Harrisburg used six of eight relievers trying to win this one. Ryan Tatusko suffered the loss on two singles given up with a wild pitch sandwiched in between. Starter Trevor Holder gave up the other run to the airborne rodents on four hits and three walks over the first five frames. The Senators were held to just five hits and left 10 runners on base. Despite the loss, Harrisburg remains mathematically alive at 5½ games behind second-place Bowie with eight games left between the two teams. The long ball did in both Rob Gilliam and Potomac as Myrtle Beach took the rubber game of the series, 11-2. Gilliam gave up 10 runs on seven hits, including three home runs, over four innings. He walked two and struck out three. The P-Nats collected 11 hits, just one fewer than the Pelicans, with eight of nine starters reaching base safely. Anthony Rendon, Adrian Sanchez, and Jeff Howell each had two hits, with Rendon tripling to center in his first at-bat as the DH. The loss drops Potomac into a tie for third place, 1½ behind Frederick in the C.L. North, as the P-Nats return home for a six-game homestand against Winston-Salem and Wilmington.

Once again, the Doubledays are the bright spot of the day.

Small sample size, but Rendon’s OPS so far this year is 1.126!

If he can just stay healthy, Rendon will almost certainly be up with the big club by this time next year. At what position is another question.

I can’t imagine he will be called up before spending at least a full year in the minors.

Why not? Zim and Stras were. If he’s ready, he’s ready.

There is no doubt Rendon can hit.

There is also little doubt that barring an injury (or two), it will be tough for him to crack the Nationals roster.

I mean, his bat is probably an upgrade over Lombardozzi (whom I like), but he has yet to demonstrate anything close to Lombardozzi’s versatility defensively so even that spot will be tough to grab, let alone taking 3B or even 2B.

And with the Nats already having a crowded OF and facing a decision on Morse/La Roche or a new CF leadoff type next season, it’s not like a spot can be created by moving someone to another position.

It’s a great problem to have, and a lot can change in a year, but right now there’s just little room for Rendon at the Nationals Big League Inn.

I suspect in the AFL, spring training and next year in the minors you’ll see Rendon playing a lot of different positions to help his chances of getting his bat to the Nationals faster.

There’s also that little matter of proving he can play more than 63 games in a season.

        There you are, nitpicking again.

LaRoche’s option for 2013 is a mutual option. He’ll almost certainly turn it down and look for a multi-year deal considering the season he’s been having. That opens up 1B or a corner outfield spot, depending on what they do with Morse. It might not be a bad idea to see how Rendon handles 1B, since 2B and 3B are blocked for the next 5-8 years.

I wouldn’t be so quick to give 2B to Espinosa, I still find it hard to create a lineup with he and Desmond in it. Neither has an OBP high enough for me, Ian’s mid season run not withstanding.

Plus anyone who stikes out as much as Espinosa is hard to keep in a lineup where the other big hitters strike out a lot too. I thnk that if Espinosa and Rendon had equal WAR’s, Rendon would provide more value to the Nats being that he is a different type of hitter
