Broderick DFA’d, Cole Kimball Recalled

The 2006 draft class shutout is over.

The Nationals have announced that Brian Broderick has been designated for assignment, clearing the way for Cole Kimball to join the Washington Nationals.

Broderick was a Rule 5 pick last December and made the club out of spring training. He has struggled at the major-league level, allowing nine runs on 16 hits over 12⅓ innings in 11 appearances, posting 0-1 record with a 6.57 ERA.

Kimball has 0.00 ERA in 12 appearances, with eight hits and eight walks allowed over 13⅔ innings and 14 strikeouts. He had a 1-0 record with five saves before the move.

With the callup, the so-called 2006 Nationals draft shutout is officially over.

  2. The DFA will force StL to either reclaim Broderick or let him go. I think he’s good enough for AAA, so we’ll see how that plays out.

    Adding Kimball might be another 6-7th inning piece along with Coffey in front of Clippard, Burnett & Storen. I guess that Slaten & Rodriguez become ‘mop-up’ arms until Rizzo makes a move with Gaudin.

  4. 2 more ex-Nats suffered releases this week, Adrian Alaniz was let go by the Phillies, and Mike Daniel was let go by the Rox

    Adrian was pitching in the Florida State League (Potomac equivalent) but not with his National effectiveness, 7.71 ERA. Mike Daniel was released by the Rockies, he started this year with their AA Tulsa team. He was let go by the Nats last year, he had finished up 2010 in the Braves system. In 2k7 when I went down to Spring training, watching scrimmages at the Baerger minor league complex, every time Daniel was on base, coaches would yell out “Good Runner!” Mike was drafted in the 7th round of the 2k5 draft, out of North Carolina. Alaniz was an 8th rounder in 2k7 out of U of Texas. He was part of vaunted Vermont pitching staff of 2007, with JZ, Colten Willems, Glenn Gibson, Cole Kimball, Hassan Pena.

  5. Nice first MLB outing for Kimball today.

    It’s a shame Mike Daniel never progressed from the 2007 level in Potomac. I watched him and remember when the “big 3” of Mike Daniel, Chris Marrero, and Justin Maxwell were called up from Hagerstown. Daniel was the most impressive of those 3 during that time, just ahead of Marrerro and miles ahead of the light hitting Maxwell.

    I sure like what the Nats are doing down on the farm with drafting & coaching, because at the major league level, Rizzo is a work in progress, “Amateur Hour’ would be the most apt term.

    Good for Cole, he has the stuff to stay in the bigs for a long time.

  7. I’d also like to add that Cole Kimball basically showed during the AFL and spring training that he was ready to make the roster Opening Day. We decided to roster Chad Guadin instead. Rizzo, that was you trying to outsmart the game and its options. Please stop doing that. It can’t be good for morale on the farm, and it certainly isn’t good for the tortured fans at Nats Park who had to watch Chad Guadin’s mediocrity.

  8. Cole coached my son’s team this winter and did a fantastic job. Great teacher, instructor, and motivator … Go get ’em Cole, we’re watching and cheering you on!
