2012 Watchlist: Third Basemen

Justin Bloxom Justin Bloxom
DOB: 4/29/88
Ht. 6’1″
Wt. 205
Bats: S
Throws: R
Career Stats
With the decision to turn Steve Souza into
a 1B, Bloxom was asked forced to play out
of position all year long. To his credit, it
didn’t affect his offense. Injuries limited
him to 88 games, but he showed some
pop and put up a .311/.367/.522 line over
June/July. If Souza repeats Potomac, he
may go back to 1B, but it’s also possible
he could be tried in the OF (again).
Blake Kelso Blake Kelso
DOB: 3/28/89
Ht. 5’10”
Wt. 170
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
Perhaps he’s Steve Lombardozzi Lite, but
Kelso continues to be praised by scouts for
his work ethic, defense, and baserunning.
Sickels believes he may make for a decent
UI, noting both his strength as a contact
hitter (223 hits in 188 games) and his lack
of power (185 of them were singles).
Anthony Rendon Anthony Rendon
DOB: 6/6/90
Ht. 6′
Wt. 190
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
Injury concerns (shoulder, ankle) dropped
Rendon to the Nats (#6) in the ’11 draft
but many prospect gurus felt he was the
best player anyway. Not big for a CI (6′,
190) he’s praised for strong hands/wrists
and superb plate discipline. Defensively,
scouts like his skills at either 3B or 2B,
noting that his .300BA, 25HR, 100RBI bat
is the real deal.
Matt Skole Matt Skole
DOB: 7/30/89
Ht. 6’4″
Wt. 230
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
Matt Skole can hit. The question is: Can he
field enough to stick at 3B? He looked bad
the two games I saw him play last summer
but also drilled a HR. A move to 1B or LF
is probably in order, but to quote MLB
Draft Guide’s Matt Drabusky: “Skole will
go as far as his bat will take him.”

Jean Carlos Valdez
DOB: 3/14/93
Ht. 6’2″
Wt. 190
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
A 1B on the ’11 Watchlist, Valdez is listed
as a 3B due to usage; he’s still being used
in multiple positions. As an 18-y.o. in the
GCL, his playing time was limited but
improved on his 2010 DSL numbers nevertheless.

Diomedes Eusebio
DOB: 9/8/92
Ht. 6′
Wt. 185
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
Another one of the 16 IFAs announced
last February Feb. ’11, and also got an
instrux invite. Showed especially good
power numbers for a DSL teen (.451 SLG,
6HR, 30RBI in 59G) while playing almost
exclusively at 3B.

2 Commments

  1. With possibly the most talented player in all of last years draft at his position, I’d like to see Scole get some solid time at LF this coming season. But we also have some high ceiling athletes in the OF in the minor league system so his bat will definitely have to shine to pass the more “toolsy” outfielders.
